A pesar de la competencia demostrada en el trabajo aplicado y el manejo de las nuevas técnicas, como los sistemas de información geográfica y las herramientas geo-estadísticas, el interés por la teoría y epistemología de la disciplina parece avanzar poco ante las exigencias inmediatas. Por ello el propósito de este libro es el de ofrecerla a los geógrafos y estudiantes avanzados, pero también para quienes la geografía no es su especialidad, pero sí su debilidad, los conocimientos básicos relacionados con la evolución del pensamientos geográfico y el proceso migratorio de una ciencia que se inicia en el mundo natural, pero que progresivamente deriva hacia el mundo social, sin olvidar sus orígenes. en el devenir de la disciplina se interrelacionan de diversas formas, tanto los pensamientos tradicionales como los abordajes emergentes. Las tradiciones ecológicas y corográficas, arraigadas en la conciencia y práctica disciplinaria, y los pensamientos emergentes -espaciales, radicales y humanistas- conforman, de este modo, los matices conceptuales de la ciencia geográfica. De ellos deriva una cultura sobre el espacio, que posibilita interrogantes en torno a la desigual actuación de las sociedades en los múltiples entornos del espacio-teimpo apropiado, mejor dicho de los territorios. ¿Cómo entender la relación entre iniquidad social y heterogeneidad territorial? ¿Por qué unas regiones de desarrollan más que otras? ¿Cómo interviene la noción de espacio-tiempo en los modelos de desarrollo? ¿Cuáles son las fortalezas y debilidades de la diversidad territorial en los procesos de desarrollo de la sociedad? Este tipo de preguntas se argumentas y responden teóricamente con mayor precisión, cuando se esclarecen las tramas, e incluso paradojas, del pensamiento geográfico; un pensamiento de muy larga duración, que hoy ausculta las especialidades de la territorialidad de la sociedad en las tramas espaciales del mundo global.

Authors such as Jos� Eustasio Rivera, R�mulo Gallegos, Mario Vargas Llosa, C�sar Calvo, M�rcio Souza, and M�rio de Andrade traveled to the Amazonian regions of their respective countries and encountered firsthand a forest divided and despoiled by the spatial logic of extractivism. Writing against that logic, they fill their novels with geographic, human, and ecological realities omitted from official accounts of the region. Though the plots unfold after the height of the Amazonian rubber boom (1850-1920), the authors construct landscapes marked by that first large-scale exploitation of Amazonian biodiversity. The material practices of rubber extraction repeat in the stories told about the removal of other plants, seeds, and mineral from the forest as well as its conversion into farmland. The counter-discursive impulse of each novel comes into dialogue with various modernizing projects that carve Amazonia into cultural and economic spaces: border commissions, extractive infrastructure, school geography manuals, Indigenous education programs, and touristic propaganda. Even the novel maps studied have blind spots, though, and Mapping the Amazon considers the legacy of such unintentional omissions today.
