Download or read book Paul Ricœur written by Frans D. Vansina and published by Peeters Publishers. This book was released on 2000 with total page 586 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Already more than sixty years Paul Ricoeur enriches the international philosophical patrimony with an astonishing number of highly technical books and enlightening reflections on actual problems and situations. To serve the community of researchers in philosophy I have already published two systematic bibliographies of (and on) Ricoeur in 1985 and 1995. Encouraged by friends and colleagues I present now another updated bibliography as exhaustive as possible.

Book Synopsis Polyphonic Thinking and the Divine by : Jim Kanaris
Download or read book Polyphonic Thinking and the Divine written by Jim Kanaris and published by Rodopi. This book was released on 2013 with total page 193 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Philosophy of religion is a highly diversified field. An apt description of it is “zoo.” It conjures imagery of a species-wide cacophony of sights and sounds. While some bemoan what this description implies, Contributors to this volume appreciate it. There is no reason why a zoo should intimate a den of confusion rather than an important condition of emergence and novelty. “Polyphonic” is the catchall term to capture this sentiment. It signals a way of thinking that resists the desire to siphon insight into manageable packets of information in the Name of historicality and finitude. A polyphonic, then, is a variegated and discontinuous study that breaks with a tradition that desires continuity and unification, without being erratic. This volume is an exercise in polyphonic thinking. Each contributing scholar develops ideas in connection with his or her research interests. Despite the fluctuation of themes, symmetry exists as each piece sounds off a core melody of religion and the divine. The book contributes to the advancement of current research in contemporary Continental philosophy of religion. By juxtaposing articles by cultural theorists and philosophers of religion, religionists and theologians, the book emphasizes the importance of interdisciplinary and polyphonic conversation to the development of matters of topical interest and issues related to method and ethics in religious studies, and theology.
Book Synopsis The Search for the Perfect Language by : Umberto Eco
Download or read book The Search for the Perfect Language written by Umberto Eco and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 1997-04-08 with total page 406 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The idea that there once existed a language which perfectly and unambiguously expressed the essence of all possible things and concepts has occupied the minds of philosophers, theologians, mystics and others for at least two millennia. This is an investigation into the history of that idea and of its profound influence on European thought, culture and history. From the early Dark Ages to the Renaissance it was widely believed that the language spoken in the Garden of Eden was just such a language, and that all current languages were its decadent descendants from the catastrophe of the Fall and at Babel. The recovery of that language would, for theologians, express the nature of divinity, for cabbalists allow access to hidden knowledge and power, and for philosophers reveal the nature of truth. Versions of these ideas remained current in the Enlightenment, and have recently received fresh impetus in attempts to create a natural language for artificial intelligence. The story that Umberto Eco tells ranges widely from the writings of Augustine, Dante, Descartes and Rousseau, arcane treatises on cabbalism and magic, to the history of the study of language and its origins. He demonstrates the initimate relation between language and identity and describes, for example, how and why the Irish, English, Germans and Swedes - one of whom presented God talking in Swedish to Adam, who replied in Danish, while the serpent tempted Eve in French - have variously claimed their language as closest to the original. He also shows how the late eighteenth-century discovery of a proto-language (Indo-European) for the Aryan peoples was perverted to support notions of racial superiority. To this subtle exposition of a history of extraordinary complexity, Umberto Eco links the associated history of the manner in which the sounds of language and concepts have been written and symbolized. Lucidly and wittily written, the book is, in sum, a tour de force of scholarly detection and cultural interpretation, providing a series of original perspectives on two thousand years of European History. The paperback edition of this book is not available through Blackwell outside of North America.

Book Synopsis A Critical Reading of the Development of Raimon Panikkar's Thought on the Trinity by : Camilia Gangasingh MacPherson
Download or read book A Critical Reading of the Development of Raimon Panikkar's Thought on the Trinity written by Camilia Gangasingh MacPherson and published by University Press of America. This book was released on 1996 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the Trinitarian thought of Raimon Panikkar in his attempt to bridge the gap between Christianity and the world religions. The viewpoints of the early and later Panikkar show continuity and shifts in his Trinitarian theology. The early Panikkar provides a Trinitarian theology and reaches the heart of the world religions, especially the Advaita Vedanta experience in Hinduism and the Nirvana experience of Buddhism. The later Panikkar, still using many of the probing concepts of his earlier thought, departs significantly from traditional Christian theology. His thoughts still continue the attempt at bridge-building between Christianity on the one hand and the world religions, and even the secular world, on the other. Although several dimensions of Panikkar's Trinitarian theology are open to severe criticism, nevertheless, it serves as an effective tool for furthering awareness of and dialogue between the world religions.
Book Synopsis Symbols of Transcendence by : Paul J. Levesque
Download or read book Symbols of Transcendence written by Paul J. Levesque and published by Wm. B. Eerdmans Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 416 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 22 in the LTPM series offers a synchronic investigation of the thought of Christian philosopher Louis Dupre. Working from a careful reading of Dupre's vast body of writings, Paul Levesque demonstrates that in Dupre's work all religious expression, insofar as it has a transcendent reference, is intrinsically symbolic. In the course of his study, Levesque discusses the general necessity of employing symbols for religious expression; investigates in depth Dupre's symbol theory and applies it to the religious symbols of ritual, sacraments, and religious art; examines the modern inability to fully form religious symbols; and explores Dupre's particular call to recover the mystical experience in personal life.

Download or read book Paul Ricoeur written by Charles E. Reagan and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 1998-06-22 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reagan combines different genres to supplement and enhance the central biographical essay. A personal memoir recalls the turbulent student protests of the 1960s and Ricoeur's controversial resignation as head of the faculties at the University of Paris-Nanterre. A penetrating philosophical exposition draws together the essential themes of Ricoeur's philosophical anthropology. And a collection of four substantive interviews offers privileged access to Ricoeur's own remarkably clear explication of his most challenging and stimulating ideas. The result of this innovative mix of genres is a multidimensional and astonishingly perceptive portrait of a seminal philosopher's life and work.
