"Read for yourself," he replied, and handed me a copy of the Frankfurter Zeitung of August 5, 1914. Yes, it was true, Great Britain had declared war on Germany. The news came as an overwhelming surprise. I had been among the many who thought that human foresight in the twentieth century would find some way of settling international disputes other than by the arbitrament of the hellish devices of modern warfare. I was wrong. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pete Anderson, the only Canadian officer to escape from a World War I POW camp and other adventures in the Russian revolution Pete Anderson was a genuine Canadian hero. Canadians generally agree that heroes are celebrated less in their culture than in some others. This treatment of heroes does little to recognize and value the many ordinary men and women who went before to attain extraordinary achievements. Pete Anderson, whom this book is about, was such a person. He didn’t change the world. But he did make a significant difference. In typical Canadian fashion, he didn’t view himself as a hero. Before going to war in 1914, Anderson had been an early pioneer in Edmonton, Alberta, where he had been a successful, rich, and respected businessman. He was a middle-aged man when he fought in the First World War. Shortly after arriving in France, he was captured by the enemy, on his birthday. In a daring escape, he was able to breach the defences of the prisoner of war camp in which he was held and to return to Britain, after an eventful transit through much of Germany. He, and others, thought that he might have been the first Canadian to have escaped from the Germans. He was not. A fellow Albertan, Cpl. Ernest Atherton of the 10th Battalion, probably escaped slightly earlier. However, Anderson was not only the first Canadian officer to successfully escape, he was also the only Canadian officer to escape during the First World War (many others made the attempt but were recaptured). Towards the end of the war, Anderson volunteered to fight in northern Russia, first against the Germans and then as part of an Allied attempt to overthrow the Bolshevik revolution of 1917. When he returned from his wars, he had earned two Distinguished Service Orders (DSO Bar), a senior honour awarded for exemplary service under enemy fire.

Book excerpt: `We Can Take It!' shows that the British remember the war in a peculiar way, thanks to a mix of particular images and evidence. Our memory has been shaped by material which is completely removed from historical reality. These images (including complete inventions) have combined to make a new history. The vision is mostly cosy and suits the way in which the Britons conceive of themselves: dogged, good humoured, occasionally bumbling, unified and enjoying diversity. In fact Britons load their memory towards the early part of the war (Dunkirk, Blitz, Battle of Britain) rather than when we were successful in the air or against Italy and Germany with invasions. This suits our love of being the underdog, fighting against the odds, and being in a crisis. Conversely, the periods of the war during which Britain was in the ascendant are, perversely, far more hazy in the public memory.
Book Synopsis The Greatest Escape by : Neil Churches
Download or read book The Greatest Escape written by Neil Churches and published by Pan Macmillan. This book was released on 2022-05-26 with total page 349 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The gripping, vividly told story of the largest prisoner of war escape in of the Second World War – organized by an Australian bank clerk, a British jazz pianist and an American spy. In August 1944, the most successful POW escape of the Second World War took place - 106 Allied prisoners were freed from a camp in Maribor, in present-day Slovenia. The escape was organized not by officers, but by two ordinary soldiers: Australian Ralph Churches (a bank clerk before the war) and Londoner Les Laws (a jazz pianist by profession), with the help of U.S. intelligence officer Franklin Lindsay. The American was on a mission to work with the partisans: a group who moved like ghosts through the Alps, ambushing and evading Nazi forces. Told here for the first time is the story of how these three men came together – along with the partisans – to plan and execute the escape is told here for the first time. The Greatest Escape, written by Ralph Churches’ son Neil, takes us from Ralph and Les’s capture in Greece in 1941 and their brutal journey to Maribor, with many POWs dying along the way, to the horror of seeing Russian prisoners starved to death in the camp. The book uncovers the hidden story of Allied intelligence operations in Slovenia, and shows how Ralph became involved. We follow the escapees on a nail-biting 160-mile journey across the Alps, pursued by German soldiers, ambushed and betrayed. And yet, of the 106 men who escaped, 100 made it to safety. Thanks to research across seven countries, The Greatest Escape is no longer a secret. It is one of the most remarkable adventure stories of the last century.
