Book Synopsis The Quest for the Plausible Jesus by : Gerd Theissen
Download or read book The Quest for the Plausible Jesus written by Gerd Theissen and published by Westminster John Knox Press. This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Should the dissimilarity between Jesus and early Christianity or between Jesus and Judaism be the central criteria for the historical Jesus? Gerd Theissen and Dagmar Winter argue that the criterion of dissimilarity does not do justice to the single most important result of more than two-hundred years of Jesus research: that the historical Jesus belongs to both Judaism and Christianity. The two authors propose a criterion of historical plausibility so that historical phenomenon under question can be considered authentic so long as it can be plausibly understood in its Jewish context and also facilitates a plausible explanation for its later effects in Christian history. This book is a cooperative project between Dagmar Winter and Gerd Theissen and represents the fruit of many years of their research on the historical Jesus.

Book Synopsis Crisis in Lutheran Theology, Vol. 1 by : John Warwick Montgomery
Download or read book Crisis in Lutheran Theology, Vol. 1 written by John Warwick Montgomery and published by New Reformation Publications. This book was released on 2018-01-27 with total page 317 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All Three volumes deal with the issue of biblical inerrancy (that the Bible is completely true and accurate, not only when it speaks to ideas of religious belief, but also when it speaks about factual elements of history and science, properly understood). This issue rocked the Lutheran Church Missouri Synod back in the late 1960s and early 1970s, prompting the release of the first two volumes. Volume one consists of essays by John Warwick Montgomery himself, and is addressed primarily to theologians. Volume two consists of an anthology by eight separate Lutheran contributors and is addressed to laymen as well as professional theologians. Volume 3 is new, never before published material and consists of essays by Dr. Montgomery outlining a new challenge along the same lines. Dr. Jeffery Kloha suggested a few years ago with the latest critical edition of the New Testament (Nestle-Aland 28th Edition), because of the interchangeability of some variant readings, that we now had a "plastic text". Dr. Montgomery goes up against this assertion with everything he has. Though obviously addressing themselves primarily to Lutheranism, the materials are, to a large degree, equally applicable to many of the other Christian communions and will be found to be extremely valuable in assessing the needs of a variety of denominations.

Book Synopsis Jesus and His Death by : Scot McKnight
Download or read book Jesus and His Death written by Scot McKnight and published by Baylor University Press. This book was released on 2005 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent scholarship on the historical Jesus has rightly focused upon how Jesus understood his own mission. But no scholarly effort to understand the mission of Jesus can rest content without exploring the historical possibility that Jesus envisioned his own death. In this careful and far-reaching study, Scot McKnight contends that Jesus did in fact anticipate his own death, that Jesus understood his death as an atoning sacrifice, and that his death as an atoning sacrifice stood at the heart of Jesus' own mission to protect his own followers from the judgment of God.
Download or read book Jesus written by Hans Conzelmann and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 134 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the publication of D. F. Strauss's The Life of Jesus Critically Examined in 1835. New Testament scholarship has devoted an extraordinary amount of energy to the pursuit of the problem of the historical Jesus. In this classic study, originally published in the third edition of the German encyclopedia Religion in Geschicte and Gegenwart. Hanz Conzelmann delineates with brevity and clarity the main outlines of this area of New Testament research and states his own position over against divergent points of view. Norman Perrin, in his Rediscovering the Teachings of Jesus, acknowledged the great importance of this essay and stated that it "demands both translation into English and presentation in a form more readily accessible than that of an article within the pages of a multi-volume learned encyclopedia." Dr. J. Raymond Lord has provided the translation. Dr. John Reumann has adapted the format of the book to the needs of an English-speaking audience and has provided a bibliography that emphasizes the most important and most recent additions to the literature on this subject. -Publisher
