Der Leidener Maler orientiert sich an Raffaels Schule von Athen, um damit implizit die Frage angemessener und unangemessener Nachahmung zu stellen. Die Studie insgesamt will zeigen, wie differenziert Rembrandt mit Vorbildern umzugehen vermag. Steht auch die Nachtwache im Zentrum der Untersuchung, so werden auch andere Gemälde sowie Radierungen und Zeichnungen interpretiert und nach der ironischen Dimension von Rembrandts Kunst im Ganzen gefragt. The focus of Müller’s study is a new interpretation of Rembrandt’s Night Watch from 1642, which highlights the painter’s engagement with the classical art theory of Franciscus Junius. Junius’s treatise, "De pictura veterum", was published in Latin in 1637 and in Dutch in 1641. Ultimately, Müller argues that Rembrandt’s group portrait was designed to present a critique of the Italianate/classical concepts of Imitatio in addition to offering an ironic commentary on artworks of the Antique and High Renaissance periods. The Dutch artist takes Raphael’s School of Athens as a reference point, thereby implicitly posing questions about appropriate and inappropriate forms of imitation. The study as a whole shows how complex and witty Rembrandt’s approach to his models could be. Although the Night Watch occupies a central place in the inquiry, the author also engages with other paintings, etchings and drawings in order to sketch the contours of Rembrandt’s ironic image making.

In the history of exegesis, the book's (supposed) author has often been regarded as mad or ill, or as suffering from "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder" according to a recent diagnosis. The present study radicalizes this approach by investigating the book of Ezekiel as trauma literature. On the basis of a multi-faceted trauma hermeneutics the peculiarities as well as the inconsistencies of the book are shown to be material aspects of a fictionalised trauma process in the context of Israel's experiences of siege warfare and mass deportation in the early 6th century bce. The analysis demonstrates that the potential for violence inherent in the catastrophe has created not only an intense discourse about blame and punishment but also a theologically disturbing picture of a traumatized deity; in both cases the purpose is to assure the survival of Yhwh and the people. Das Ezechielbuch hat seine Leserschaft seit jeher verwundert und verwirrt. Den vermeintlichen Autor des Buches hat man im Laufe der Auslegungsgeschichte immer wieder pathologisiert – zuletzt ist Ezechiel mehrfach die Diagnose „Posttraumatische Belastungsstörung“ attestiert worden. Die vorliegende Studie nimmt diesen Krankheitsansatz auf und radikalisiert ihn, indem sie das Ezechielbuch konsequent als fiktionale Trauma-Literatur analysiert. Vor dem Hintergrund einer mehrdimensionalen Trauma-Hermeneutik erschließt sie die Ezechielprophetie neu als literarisch-theologische Auseinandersetzung mit den traumatisierenden Kriegsereignissen, die Juda und Jerusalem zu Beginn des 6. Jh.s v.u.Z. getroffen haben. Es zeigt sich, dass die ungeheure Gewaltfülle der Exilskatastrophe nicht nur einen massiven Schuld-Strafe-Diskurs, sondern auch das theologisch erschütternde Bild einer traumatisierten Gottheit aus sich herausgesetzt hat – beides mit dem Ziel, das Überleben JHWHs und des Volkes zu sichern.

The situation of the sources, however, is complicated: On Giotto's life, there are – on the one hand – biographical accounts from the mid-fourteenth century onwards that responded to various ideological requirements (patriotism, humanism, Renaissance ideology, cult of the artist); on the other, there is extensive documentary material from Giotto's lifetime, which seems to reflect less the biography of an artist than that of a bourgeois businessman resolutely climbing the social ladder. The present volume focuses on this second aspect of the Giotto figure's double life relating it to the form of existence of the pre-modern artist. Vol. 2: Works The paintings examined and contextualised in this volume are those secured for Giotto through early written sources. These sources also help to reconstruct the sequence of his works and artistic inventions as is plausible in the context of media culture in the decades around and after 1300: while Giotto was spiritually and intellectually formed in the sphere of the Florentine Dominicans, his artistic path began in Rome in the shadow of the Curia. The breakthrough to his own artistic concept came immediately before and during his work in Padua. In addition to prominent churchmen, ecclesiastical institutions, and the King of Naples, his clients were predominantly members of Italy's urban and financial elites. The adoption and further development of his inventions by other - especially Sienese - painters pressured him in his later years to try new approaches again. Vol. 3: Survival Giotto is considered by many to be the founder of modern painting. This thesis is discussed and modified in the present volume on an empirical basis. What emerges is that Giotto's impact cannot be reduced simply to the introduction of the study of nature. Rather, his art was involved in the development of pictorial idioms that were attuned to the skills and interests of their audiences. The new approaches in his painting contributed in particular to the possibility of examining and communicating psychological, narrative and allegorical content of great complexity outside the media of language and text, which not only changed the face of European art but certainly contributed to the intellectual opening of Western societies.
