Book Synopsis Coastal Erosion by : Roger H. Charlier
Download or read book Coastal Erosion written by Roger H. Charlier and published by Springer. This book was released on 2006-04-10 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The coastal zone is subject to strong pressures from a large number of users. Populations are migrating to it in large numbers. Industry wants to exploit it for its space, water and manpower. Aggregate miners want to exploit mineral resources and health centers are multiplying. It is a favorite area for tourism and recreation worldwide. The zone can boom economically. However, coastlines are progressively receding worldwide, making the zone fragile, vulnerable, and unstable. The book presents methods of coastal protection and beach restoration and offers solutions to the various problems.

Download or read book Soil Erosion written by Danilo Godone and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2011-11-21 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soil erosion affects a large part of the Earth surface, and accelerated soil erosion is recognized as one of the main soil threats, compromising soil productive and protective functions. The land management in areas affected by soil erosion is a relevant issue for landscape and ecosystems preservation. In this book we collected a series of papers on erosion, not focusing on agronomic implications, but on a variety of other relevant aspects of the erosion phenomena. The book is divided into three sections: i) various implications of land management in arid and semiarid ecosystems, ii) erosion modeling and experimental studies; iii) other applications (e.g. geoscience, engineering). The book covers a wide range of erosion-related themes from a variety of points of view (assessment, modeling, mitigation, best practices etc.).

Book Synopsis Sand and Gravel Spits by : Giovanni Randazzo
Download or read book Sand and Gravel Spits written by Giovanni Randazzo and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-04-16 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book draws together a series of studies of spit geomorphology and temporal evolution from around the world. The volume offers some unique insights into how these landforms are examined scientifically and how we as humans impact them, offering a global perspective on spit genesis and evolution. Spits are unique natural environments whose evolution is linked to the adjacent coast and near shore morphology, sediment supply, coastal dynamics and sea-level change. Over the past century, Global Mean Sea Level (GMSL) has risen by 10 to 20 centimetres and many coastal spits represent the first sentinel against coastal submersion. Scientific research indicates that sea levels worldwide have been rising at a rate of 3.5 millimetres per year since the early 1990s, roughly twice the average speed of the preceding 80 years. This trend, linked to global warming will undoubtedly cause major changes in spit morphology. Spits are highly mobile coastal landforms that respond rapidly to environmental change. They therefore represent a signature of past environmental change and provide a landform indicator of climate change.

Book Synopsis Handbook of Coastal Processes and Erosion by : Paul D. Komar
Download or read book Handbook of Coastal Processes and Erosion written by Paul D. Komar and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2018-02-06 with total page 492 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this book is to focus on the physical processes that cause coastal erosion. Many scientists and engineers have focused their research on the entire range of physical processes from the waves and the currents in the nearshore to the response of the beach, via sand transport, resulting in a changing coastal morphology. Of these many processes, this book focuses only on those which directly relate the generation of coastal erosion. Some chapters deal exclusively with the physical processes, while others provide examples of erosion problems although most of the chapter topics have clear implications for issues of coastal-zone management, these issues are not belaboured as several other books are already available in this area. The objective is to provide state-of-the-art presentation of the science of coastal erosion processes.
