Adorno’s “Nonidentical.” Taking the overarching theme of “identity and difference” as a guide, we can peel apart what unites and separates these two thinkers. In so doing, certain “de-realizing” effects of Derrida’s entrapment in signs reveal themselves. By contrast, Adorno’s social and cultural diagnosis, when extrapolated to a post-Fordian context is astonishingly fruitful. Attempts to trivialize negative dialectics as a model of intellectual self-understanding from a past age or as an esthetic reserve of ways of life are untenable.

Desgleichen die Vielfalt an Impulsen, welche dies Werk zahl reichen Einzelwissenschaften und Fachern bereits vermittelte, sowie Bereichen und Institutionen des Offentlichen Lebens. Wer, wiederum als ein Grenz-Beispiel, die Feuilletons von Tageszeitungen aufmerk sam verfolgt, der wird immer wieder auf den Namen, auf herbeizi tierte Gedanken Adornos sto~en, vor allem, aber nicht nur, in Zusammenhangen, in denen von Kunst - von Literatur und ganz besonders von Musik die Rede ist. Adornos Phllosophie hat als "Asthetik" die Kunst, die Kiinste reflektiert. Aber sie ist ohne seine "Erkenntnistheorie", insbesondere die Negative Dialektik, nicht angemessen verstehbar.

Drawing on Voltaire, Diderot, and Schiller, Schoolman reconstructs the genealogical history of what he calls the reconciliation image—a visual model of a democratic ideal of reconciliation he then theorizes through Whitman's prose and poetry and Adorno's aesthetic theory. Analyzing The Help (2011) and Gentleman's Agreement (1947), Schoolman shows how film produces a more advanced image of reconciliation than those originally created by modernist artworks. Each film depicts violence toward racial and ethnic difference while also displaying a reconciliation image that aesthetically educates the public about how the violence of constructing difference as otherness can be overcome. Mounting a democratic enlightenment, the reconciliation image in film illuminates a possible politics for challenging the rise of nationalism's violence toward differences in all their diversity.
