Book excerpt: Erasmus was a sixteenth century educator, theologian, satirist, and scholar and there have been a number of attempts to describe his intellectual development and to measure his greatness. However, Rabil believes that most interpretations of Erasmus and his work fail in analyzing Erasmus in a way consistent with all the source material on which such an interpretation must be based. The author argues that religion and humanism are the proper poles in relation to which Erasmus' intellectual development must be understood. In Rabil's own interpretation of Erasmus, he covers Erasmus' intellectual development as it relates to his editing of the New Testament in Greek, his translation of it into Latin, a look at the methodology in Erasmus' annotations and paraphrase of Romans, and a comparison of Erasmus and Luther on Romans. Rabil demonstrates that Erasmus' intellectual development occurred at every turning point, from his first poem in 1483 until he achieved a maturity of outlook in his edition of the Greek New Testament in 1516. Originally published in 1972 by Trinity University Press.

Book excerpt: Departing from the traditional focus on Erasmus as philologist and moralist, Rhetoric and Theology shows how Erasmus attempted to interpret Scripture by way of a rhetorical theology that focuses on the figurative, metaphorical quality of language, with a view to moral and theological reform. Manfred Hoffmann concentrates on the theological scources of Erasmus' hermeneutic from 1518 to 1535, especially the Ratio verae theologiae, the Ecclesiastes, and the exegesis of Old and New Testament texts. He shows that Erasmus' hermeneutic is based on the concept of language as mediation. Words do not have the power to represent the truth unambiguously, but they appeal to our understanding in ways that draw us to the truth through the process of interpretation. For Erasmus it is through allegory that the divine Word carries out its mediation between letter and spirit. Erasmus used the tools of rhetoric to read and understand Scripture, and thereby constructed a theological framework that has a direct relationship with his hermeneutic. Rhetorical theologians imitate the invention, disposition, inverbation, and delivery of divine speech by clarifying its composition, ordering its subject matter, internalizing its content, and communicating its transforming power of persuasion. Rhetoric provided Erasmus with the tools for finding theological loci in Scripture, drawing from it a repertoire for knowing and living, and translating it into sacred oratory.

Driven by the desire to convert the native Purhépecha-Chichimec peoples to a purified form of Christianity, free of the corruptions of European Catholicism, he sought to establish New World Edens in Michoacán by congregating the people into pueblo-hospital communities, where mendicant friars could more easily teach them the fundamental beliefs of Christianity and the values of Spanish culture. In this broadly synthetic study, Bernardino Verástique explores Vasco de Quiroga's evangelizing project in its full cultural and historical context. He begins by recreating the complex and not wholly incompatible worldviews of the Purhépecha and the Spaniards at the time of their first encounter in 1521. With Quiroga as a focal point, Verástique then traces the uneasy process of assimilation and resistance that occurred on both sides as the Spaniards established political and religious dominance in Michoacán. He describes the syncretisms, or fusions, between Christianity and indigenous beliefs and practices that arose among the Purhépecha and relates these to similar developments in other regions of Mexico.
