Book excerpt: This book analyzes the contributing factors responsible for the emergence of terrorism in the Middle East with specific case studies based on empirical data that anchors the analyses in real life observation and posits unbiased, bipartisan solutions. Terrorists are targeting civilian populations around the world and increasing pressure on civil liberties, public policy and democratic institutions. With the defeat of one terrorist organization several more take its place. This book includes case studies in public administration initiatives from various Middle Eastern countries, and investigates regulation, public information, monetary and financial responsibilities, security, and civic infrastructure as possible solutions to this ever-worsening problem. With terrorism emerging as a major global policy issue this book speaks to global security and public policy and administrative issues in the Middle East, and will be of interest to researchers in terrorism and security in the Middle East, public administration, international relations, political economy, and to government officials, security analysts and investors.
Book Synopsis Anti-American Terrorism and the Middle East by : Barry Rubin
Download or read book Anti-American Terrorism and the Middle East written by Barry Rubin and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2002-09-12 with total page 409 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: After the September 11, 2001, terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center and the Pentagon, a stunned public asked: How could this happen? Why did the attackers do what they did? What did they hope to accomplish? This wasn't the first battle in a conflict that has included bombings of U.S. embassies and planes, the Iran hostage crisis, and kidnappings or shootings of American citizens. This unique volume sets out to answer these questions using the unfiltered words of the terrorists themselves. Over many decades, radical forces in the Middle East have changed and evolved, yet their basic outlook and anti-Western views have remained remarkably consistent. Barry Rubin and Judith Colp Rubin have assembled nearly one hundred key documents, charting the evolution of radical Middle East movements, their anti-Americanism, and Western policy response. The buildup to the battle between a world superpower and Middle East revolutionaries is brought dramatically to life. Among the documents included are the charters of such organizations as Hizballah, Hamas, and World Islamic Front; speeches by Syrian president Hafiz al-Asad and former Iraqi president Saddam Hussein; al-Qa'ida recruitment materials; and terrorist training manuals. The book also shows and analyzes the often conflicting and deeply conflicted responses to September 11 by journalists, clerics, and activists in the Arab world. Supplemented by an annotated chronology, a glossary of terms, and sections that put each selection in context, this comprehensive reference serves not only as essential historical background to the ongoing aftermath of the September 11 attacks, but more generally as an invaluable framework for understanding a long-term, continuing conflict that has caused many crises for the United States.
Book Synopsis War on Terror by : Robert Barry Satloff
Download or read book War on Terror written by Robert Barry Satloff and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The attacks of September 11 were transformative events, both in how Americans view their own sense of security and in how America engages with the world. Although the initial battle in the U.S.-led war against terror has been fought in central and south Asia, the principles behind that campaign have special resonance in the Middle East. This region is home to organizations which share both ideology and methodology with the perpetrators of the September 11 terrorist attacks. In addition, many aspects of the threat to U.S. interests are particular to the region: the frightening spread of weapons of mass destruction and their means of delivery; the ongoing challenge to the international system posed by Iraq; and, perhaps most of all, the reluctance that many U.S. allies in the region exhibit to confront their own religious militants. In this volume, key U.S. and Middle East decision makers, academics, and journalists discuss important themes such as the common interests of regional states in cooperating against terrorism, the different strategies adopted by regimes in confronting their Islamist challenges, the impact of September 11 events on the Israeli-Palestinian arena, the problems and prospects of maintaining the antiterror coalition, and the role of democracy as an antidote to the regions ills.

Download or read book Handbook of Terrorism in the Middle East written by Rohan Gunaratna and published by World Scientific Publishing Company. This book was released on 2022-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the Middle East, the world's deadliest organizations, the Islamic State and al Qaeda have firmly established their presence in the Levant and the Gulf. In parallel, state- sponsored Shia threat networks, groups and cells, notably the Lebanese Hezbollah and Houthis operate throughout the Middle East and beyond. Exploiting the conflict zones and their cascading ideologies, both the Sunni and Shia threat entities compete to advance their own interests. Their parent and affiliate entities recruit and radicalise both territorial and diaspora Muslims to fight each other. Unless governments work together to mitigate the threat at the core and the edge, the Middle East and its peripheral territories in Asia and Africa will suffer from terrorism and political violence in the foreseeable future. The response to extremism and its vicious by-product terrorism requires both preventive intelligence-led and pre-emptive community-based security approaches. While developing tactical counter-terrorism capabilities, governments should build strategic capabilities to erode their support bases. The new frontiers in counter-terrorism and extremism -- community engagement and rehabilitation -- should be integrated into government planning. Unless governments take the lead and work with community leaders, societies will be threatened by the existing and emerging wave of ideologically-motivated violence. Government and community leaders should develop whole-of-government and whole-of-nation approaches to dismantle transnational threats. To contain, isolate and eliminate the evolving threat, the Middle Eastern states should shift from security cooperation to collaboration and partnership.

Book Synopsis Model for the Eradication of Terrorism by : Litofe Sloj Silika PhD
Download or read book Model for the Eradication of Terrorism written by Litofe Sloj Silika PhD and published by Trafford Publishing. This book was released on 2012-07-03 with total page 167 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ten years after September 11, 2001, a date that consecrates the day that the United States of America felt victim of the most vicious terrorist attack in its recent history; it becomes increasingly critical to spell out what terrorism is and what it is not. Indeed, in the aftermath of May 1, 2011, a historical date during which President Obama announced to the American people and to the rest of the world that, US special forces have killed Osama bin Laden, the mastermind and prime responsible for the barbaric attack of September 11; it becomes critical to clearly establish a distinction between what constitute terrorist activities as opposed to freedom fighter activities. The answer to this question will help the United States, Britain and allies to effectively and efficiently prosecute the war on terror worldwide and, in turn, make the earth, our global village, a better and safer place to live. From this perspective, this essay pursues four major objectives.
Book Synopsis Terrorism Or Patriotism by : Hensley J. Hunter
Download or read book Terrorism Or Patriotism written by Hensley J. Hunter and published by Xlibris. This book was released on 2007 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dr. Hensley J. Hunter, longtime observer of the Middle East scene, analyzes terrorism, that widespread phenomenon of our times, and discusses its relationship to the many unsolved problems in that important region of the world. He begins by isolating terrorism from the slogans and the spin that have become attached to it, like barnacles on a ship. He discourages the lumping together of all insurgent and liberation movements found in diverse areas of the globe into a catch-all word a word that is used to also include al-Qaida, that truly terrorist group, advocating pure violence and anarchy. The author explains why the undifferentiating which accompanies such a loaded term as "terrorism" has caused costly delays in solving the paramount problem in the Middle East between Israel and the Palestinians. It has also caused confusion in the public's mind concerning the patriotic aspirations and motives of distinctly separate groups in the Third World who are fighting against great odds, and ferociously at times, to survive economically and physically under extreme conditions of occupation, persecution, usurpation, or even genocide. Dr. Hunter believes that al-Qaida, with its pernicious aims and methods, is quite different from the other groups which are inappropriately lumped with it. He feels that Al-Qaida itself must be confronted and eradicated from all its areas of operation. The book includes sections on Iran, South America and Africa, areas that are in turmoil, yet having problems that would be amenable to a change of direction in our foreign policy. The book is a primer for the uninformed, with its easy-to-read story-like descriptive style. Yet it contains a wealth of rarely presented information for the reader who is better acquainted with the subject.

Book Synopsis Assessing the War on Terror by : Charles Webel
Download or read book Assessing the War on Terror written by Charles Webel and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2020-09-30 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume is a collection of articles that critically examine the efficacy, ethics, and impact of the War on Terror as it has evolved since 9/11. During the decade and a half of the Global War on Terror (GWOT), numerous books have considered the political, psychosocial, and economic impacts of terrorism. However, there has been little systematic effort to examine the effectiveness of the GWOT in achieving its goals. Furthermore, there is virtually nothing that presents a comparative analysis of the GWOT by the people most directly affected by it--citizens and scholars from conflict zones in the Middle East. There is, therefore, great need for a book that analyzes the strategies, tactics, and outcomes of the GWOT and that also presents facts and ideas that are missing or underrepresented in the dominant public narratives. The contributions in this volume were chosen to specifically address this need. In doing so, it uniquely provides not only Western perspectives of the GWOT, but also importantly includes perspectives from the Middle East and those most directly affected by it, including contributions from scholars and policy makers. Overall, the contributions demonstrate how views differ based on geographical location, and how views have changed during the course of the still-evolving War on Terror. The book will be of much interest to students and scholars of terrorism and counter-terrorism, foreign policy, Middle Eastern politics, security studies and IR, as well as policy makers.

Book Synopsis Two Stars for Peace by : Martine Rothblatt
Download or read book Two Stars for Peace written by Martine Rothblatt and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 123 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Two Stars for Peace" makes a compelling case for merging Israel and Palestine into the United States. Dozens of possible objections are addressed using clear logic, historical precedent, and current statistics. This bold new strategy is also shown to be essential to removing the kindling wood of terrorism from Middle East politics. "Two Stars for Peace" is the natural successor to "The Jewish State, " Theodore Herzl's hundred-year old booklet that created Zionism. Author Martine Rothblatt persuasively demonstrates that "two-state" solutions, such as the current Middle East Roadmap, are doomed to failure, as is unbridled Zionism. However, there is a "two-star" solution that is consistent with the true spirit of Zionism, as well as with complete satisfaction of Palestinian aspirations. America is asked to rise to one of its greatest challenges by welcoming "Two Stars for Peace."
Book Synopsis Targeting Terror by : Matthew Levitt
Download or read book Targeting Terror written by Matthew Levitt and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 158 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book argues that a successful war on international terrorism must be fought on all fronts and to effectively combat terrorism, neither the United States nor its allies can be satisfied with battling only al-Qaeda, or any other specific terrorist group or collection of groups. The war on terrorism must target terrorism as a means, and all organizations that employ it or facilitate its use.
Book Synopsis Conversations with Terrorists by : Reese Erlich
Download or read book Conversations with Terrorists written by Reese Erlich and published by . This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 185 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Drawing on original research and firsthand interviews, Conversations with Terrorists offers critical portraits of six Middle Eastern leaders often labeled as terrorists: Syrian president Bashar Al-Assad, Hamas top leader Khaled Meshal, Israeli politician Geula Cohen, Iranian Revolutionary Guard founder Mohsen Sazargara, Hezbollah spiritual advisor Grand Ayatollah Mohammed Fadlallah, and former Afghan Radio and Television Ministry head Malamo Nazamy. Veteran journalist Reese Erlich offers them a chance to explain key issues and to respond to charges leveled by the United States. Critiquing these responses and synthesizing a broad range of material, Erlich shows that yesterday¿s terrorist is today¿s national leader, and that today¿s freedom fighter may become tomorrow¿s terrorist. He concludes that the global war on terror has diverted public attention from the war¿s real goal¿expanding U.S. influence and interests in the Middle East¿and offers policy remedies.
