Book excerpt: This book provides a unified approach to much of the theories of equivalence and duality between categories of modules that has transpired over the last 45 years. More recently, many authors (including the authors of this book) have investigated relationships between categories of modules over a pair of rings that are induced by both covariant and contravariant representable functors, in particular, by tilting and cotilting theories. Collecting and unifying the basic results of these investigations with innovative and easily understandable proofs, the authors provide an aid to further research on this central topic in abstract algebra.

Book excerpt: This book provides a unified approach to much of the theories of equivalence and duality between categories of modules that has transpired over the last 45 years. In particular, during the past dozen or so years many authors (including the authors of this book) have investigated relationships between categories of modules over a pair of rings that are induced by both covariant and contravariant representable functors, in particular by tilting and cotilting theories. By here collecting and unifying the basic results of these investigations with innovative and easily understandable proofs, the authors' aim is to provide an aid to further research in this central topic in abstract algebra, and a reference for all whose research lies in this field.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: About the book... In honor of Edgar Enochs and his venerable contributions to a broad range of topics in Algebra, top researchers from around the world gathered at Auburn University to report on their latest work and exchange ideas on some of today's foremost research topics. This carefully edited volume presents the refereed papers of the participants of these talks along with contributions from other veteran researchers who were unable to attend. These papers reflect many of the current topics in Abelian Groups, Commutative Algebra, Commutative Rings, Group Theory, Homological Algebra, Lie Algebras, and Module Theory. Accessible even to beginning mathematicians, many of these articles suggest problems and programs for future study. This volume is an outstanding addition to the literature and a valuable handbook for beginning as well as seasoned researchers in Algebra. about the editors... H. PAT GOETERS completed his undergraduate studies in mathematics and computer science at Southern Connecticut State University and received his Ph.D. in 1984 from the University of Connecticut under the supervision of William J. Wickless. After spending one year in a post-doctoral position in Wesleyan University under the tutelage of James D. Reid, Goeters was invited for a tenure track position in Auburn University by Ulrich F. Albrecht. Soon afterwards, William Ullery and Overtoun Jenda were hired, and so began a lively Algebra group. OVERTOUN M. G. JENDA received his bachelor's degree in Mathematics from Chancellor College, the University of Malawi. He moved to the U.S. 1977 to pursue graduate studies at University of Kentucky, earning his Ph.D. in 1981 under the supervision of Professor Edgar Enochs. He then returned to Chancellor College, where he was a lecturer (assistant professor) for three years. He moved to the University of Botswana for another three-year stint as a lecturer before moving back to the University of Kentucky as a visiting assistant professor in 1987. In 1988, he joined the Algebra research group at Auburn University.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lévy Laplacian is an infinite-dimensional generalization of the well-known classical Laplacian. The theory has become well developed in recent years and this book was the first systematic treatment of the Lévy–Laplace operator. The book describes the infinite-dimensional analogues of finite-dimensional results, and more especially those features which appear only in the generalized context. It develops a theory of operators generated by the Lévy Laplacian and the symmetrized Lévy Laplacian, as well as a theory of linear and nonlinear equations involving it. There are many problems leading to equations with Lévy Laplacians and to Lévy–Laplace operators, for example superconductivity theory, the theory of control systems, the Gauss random field theory, and the Yang–Mills equation. The book is complemented by an exhaustive bibliography. The result is a work that will be valued by those working in functional analysis, partial differential equations and probability theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This second, revised and substantially extended edition of Approximations and Endomorphism Algebras of Modules reflects both the depth and the width of recent developments in the area since the first edition appeared in 2006. The new division of the monograph into two volumes roughly corresponds to its two central topics, approximation theory (Volume 1) and realization theorems for modules (Volume 2). It is a widely accepted fact that the category of all modules over a general associative ring is too complex to admit classification. Unless the ring is of finite representation type we must limit attempts at classification to some restricted subcategories of modules. The wild character of the category of all modules, or of one of its subcategories C, is often indicated by the presence of a realization theorem, that is, by the fact that any reasonable algebra is isomorphic to the endomorphism algebra of a module from C. This results in the existence of pathological direct sum decompositions, and these are generally viewed as obstacles to classification. In order to overcome this problem, the approximation theory of modules has been developed. The idea here is to select suitable subcategories C whose modules can be classified, and then to approximate arbitrary modules by those from C. These approximations are neither unique nor functorial in general, but there is a rich supply available appropriate to the requirements of various particular applications. The authors bring the two theories together. The first volume, Approximations, sets the scene in Part I by introducing the main classes of modules relevant here: the S-complete, pure-injective, Mittag-Leffler, and slender modules. Parts II and III of the first volume develop the key methods of approximation theory. Some of the recent applications to the structure of modules are also presented here, notably for tilting, cotilting, Baer, and Mittag-Leffler modules. In the second volume, Predictions, further basic instruments are introduced: the prediction principles, and their applications to proving realization theorems. Moreover, tools are developed there for answering problems motivated in algebraic topology. The authors concentrate on the impossibility of classification for modules over general rings. The wild character of many categories C of modules is documented here by the realization theorems that represent critical R-algebras over commutative rings R as endomorphism algebras of modules from C. The monograph starts from basic facts and gradually develops the theory towards its present frontiers. It is suitable both for graduate students interested in algebra and for experts in module and representation theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is intended to provide a reasonably self-contained account of a major portion of the general theory of rings and modules suitable as a text for introductory and more advanced graduate courses. We assume the famil iarity with rings usually acquired in standard undergraduate algebra courses. Our general approach is categorical rather than arithmetical. The continuing theme of the text is the study of the relationship between the one-sided ideal structure that a ring may possess and the behavior of its categories of modules. Following a brief outline of set-theoretic and categorical foundations, the text begins with the basic definitions and properties of rings, modules and homomorphisms and ranges through comprehensive treatments of direct sums, finiteness conditions, the Wedderburn-Art in Theorem, the Jacobson radical, the hom and tensor functions, Morita equivalence and duality, de composition theory of injective and projective modules, and semiperfect and perfect rings. Both to illustrate the text and to extend it we have included a substantial number of exercises covering a wide spectrum of difficulty. There are, of course, many important areas of ring and module theory that the text does not touch upon. For example, we have made no attempt to cover such subjects as homology, rings of quotients, or commutative ring theory.

Rickard's Morita theory for derived module categories and its recent applications in representation theory of finite groups. In particular, Broué's conjecture is discussed, giving a structural explanation for relations between the p-modular character table of a finite group and that of its "p-local structure". The book is addressed to researchers or graduate students and can serve as material for a seminar. It surveys the current state of the field, and it also provides a "user's guide" to derived equivalences and tilting complexes. Results and proofs are presented in the generality needed for group theoretic applications.

The thirty-eight articles in this volume encompass the proceedings of the International Conference on Algebra and Its Applications (Athens, OH, 1999), which explored the applications and interplay among the disciplines of ring theory, linear algebra, and coding theory. The presentations collected here reflect the dialogue between mathematicians involved in theoretical aspects of algebra and mathematicians involved in solving problems where state-of-the-art research tools may be used and applied. This Contemporary Mathematics series volume communicates the potential for collaboration among those interested in exploring the wealth of applications for abstract algebra in fields such as information and coding. The expository papers would serve well as supplemental reading in graduate seminars.
