Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In “We Want Better Education!”, James B. Barrera offers a detailed and comprehensive analysis of the educational, cultural, and political issues of the Chicano Movement in Texas, which remains one of the lesser-known social and political efforts of the Civil Rights Movement of the 1960s. This movement became the political training ground for greater Chicano empowerment for students. By the 1970s, it was these students who helped to organize La Raza Unida Party in Texas. This book explores the conditions faced by students of Mexican origin in public schools throughout the South Texas region, including Westside San Antonio, Edcouch-Elsa, Kingsville, and Crystal City. Barrera focuses on the relationship of Chicano students and their parents with the school systems and reveals the types of educational deficiencies faced by such students that led to greater political activism. He also shows how school-related issues became an important element of the students’ political and cultural struggle to gain a quality education and equal treatment. Protests enabled students and their supporters to gain considerable political leverage in the decision-making process of their schools. Barrera incorporates information collected from archives throughout the state of Texas, including statistical data, government documents, census information, oral history accounts, and legal records. Of particular note are the in-depth interviews he conducted with numerous former students and community activists who participated or witnessed the various “walkouts” or student protests. “We Want Better Education!” is a major contribution to the historiography of social movements, Mexican American studies, and twentieth-century Texas and American history.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: '"Where you staying?" the Bedouin asked. "Why you not stay with me tonight - in my cave?"' Thus begins Marguerite van Geldermalsen's story of how a New Zealand-born nurse came to be married to Mohammad Abdallah Othman, a Bedouin souvenir-seller from the ancient city of Petra in Jordan. It was 1978 and she and a friend were travelling through the Middle East when Marguerite met the charismatic Mohammad who convinced her that he was the man for her. A life with Mohammad meant moving into his ancient cave and learning to love the regular tasks of baking shrak bread on an open fire and collecting water from the spring. And as Marguerite feels herself becoming part of the Bedouin community, she is thankful for the twist in fate that has led her to this contented life. Marguerite's light-hearted and guileless observations of the people she comes to love are as heart-warming as they are valuable, charting Bedouin traditions now lost to the modern world.

Book excerpt: ONE OF USA TODAY'S “20 SUMMER BOOKS YOU WON'T WANT TO MISS” In the bestselling tradition of works by such authors as Susan Orlean and Mary Roach, a New York Times reporter and Pulitzer Prize finalist explores why so many people—including herself—are obsessed with horses. It may surprise you to learn that there are over seven million horses in America—even more than when they were the only means of transportation—and nearly two million horse owners. Acclaimed journalist and avid equestrian Sarah Maslin Nir is one of them; she began riding horses when she was just two years old and hasn’t stopped since. Horse Crazy is a fascinating, funny, and moving love letter to these graceful animals and the people who—like her—are obsessed with them. It is also a coming-of-age story of Nir growing up an outsider within the world’s most elite inner circles, and finding her true north in horses. Nir takes readers into the lesser-known corners of the riding world and profiles some of its most captivating figures. We meet Monty Roberts, the California trainer whose prowess earned him the nickname “the man who listens to horses,” and his pet deer; George and Ann Blair, who at their riding academy on a tiny island in Manhattan’s Harlem River seek to resurrect the erased legacy of the African American cowboy; and Francesca Kelly, whose love for an Indian nobleman shaped her life’s mission: to protect an endangered Indian breed of horse and bring them to America. Woven into these compelling character studies, Nir shares her own moving personal narrative. She details her father’s harrowing tale of surviving the Holocaust, and describes an enchanted but deeply lonely upbringing in Manhattan, where horses became her family. She found them even in the middle of the city, in a stable disguised in an old townhouse and in Central Park, when she chased down truants as an auxiliary mounted patrol officer. And she speaks candidly of how horses have helped her overcome heartbreak and loss. Infused with heart and wit, and with each chapter named after a horse Nir has loved, Horse Crazy is an unforgettable blend of beautifully written memoir and first-rate reporting.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published in Cooperation with the William P. Clements Center for Southwest StudiesIn the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, Mexicans and Americans joined together to transform the U.S.–Mexico borderlands into a crossroads of modern economic development. This book reveals the forgotten story of their ambitious dreams and their ultimate failure to control this fugitive terrain. Focusing on a mining region that spilled across the Arizona–Sonora border, this book shows how entrepreneurs, corporations, and statesmen tried to domesticate nature and society within a transnational context. Efforts to tame a “wild” frontier were stymied by labor struggles, social conflict, and revolution. Fugitive Landscapes explores the making and unmaking of the U.S.–Mexico border, telling how ordinary people resisted the domination of empires, nations, and corporations to shape transnational history on their own terms. By moving beyond traditional national narratives, it offers new lessons for our own border-crossing age.

Book excerpt: Table of Contents Introduction Chapter 1The Golden Horse of the Desert Chapter 2 What makes Akhal - Teke's unique Chapter 3 A Few Akhal-Teke Facts Conclusion Nature's Great Wonders Author Bio Introduction He knows when you're happy, He knows when you're comfortable, He knows when you're confident, And he always knows when you have carrots. ~Author Unknown *** “The Golden Horse of the desert! Exceptional movement, agility, speed, stamina.” This is how Horsetalk.co.nz describes the Akhal-Teke. Do you think they’re right? You may not know a lot about this horse, so let’s try to find out what makes it so special. Are you ready? Then let’s get started! The Akhal – Teke is an amazing horse with a beautiful coat that shines in the sun! That’s why many call it ‘the golden horse of the desert.’ Can you guess why these horses are called “golden horses?” You’re right! It is because of their beautiful coat. It shines in the light. Look at the pictures in this book and you will see it is true. This lovely horse comes all the way from Turkmenistan. They are so loved in this country that this horse is the National Emblem. Do you know what that means? An emblem is a symbol of something else. It can represent a family, nation or organization. In this case, the Akhal Teke represents the nation of Turkmenistan. Having a beautiful coat does not mean Akhal-Teke are not strong horses. They adapt very well to where they live and they are known as one of the oldest horse breeds. Would you like to know how tough they are? In 1935, Turkmen riders went from a place called Ashgabat (Known as: Ashkabad) to Moscow. It took 84 days to make the trip and a 3 day crossing over 235 miles of desert. The most amazing part of this story is how they did this WITHOUT water! I am thirsty even thinking about it. Do you think this would have been possible without the help of this magnificent horse? I don’t think so! The Akhal- Teke is a wonderful horse. It is so adaptable it can be used as a jumping horse, sport horse, racing, endurance riding horse and more. You might think this means the horse is tough and not friendly. But this is not true. Many people say this horse is not only “golden” in its color, but also “golden” in its personality. Keep reading to find out why!
