Book excerpt: A three-part intervention method for working with antisocial or behavior disordered adolescents. The approach includes training in moral judgment, anger management/correction of thinking errors, and prosocial skills. Youth involved in the EQUIP training program participate in two types of group sessions - Equipment Meetings (in which the leader teaches specific skills) and Mutual Help Meetings (in which the leader coaches students as they use the skills they've learned to help each other). The EQUIP program received the 1998 Reclaiming Children and Youth Spotlight on Excellence Award. In addition to being widely used in the U.S., EQUIP has been adapted for use in Canada, the Netherlands, and several other countries. Program Evaluation In an evaluation of the program, 57 boys between the ages of 15 and 18 who were recently committed to a juvenile corrections facility were randomly assigned to one of three groups: 1) The experimental EQUIP treatment group, 2) the motivational control group, or 3) the simple control group. Results indicated that participants in the EQUIP group experienced significant decreases in self- and staff-reported institutional misconduct as well as gains in social skills, whereas participants in either control group did not. There were no differences between groups in regards to changes in moral judgment.Leeman, L.W., Gibbs, J.C., & Fuller, D. (1993). Evaluation of a multi-component group treatment program for juvenile delinquents. Aggressive Behavior, 19, 281-292.UpdatesSince its introduction in the early 1990s, the EQUIP Program has been adapted and implemented at various facilities and institutions in North America, Europe, and Australia. The institutions include juvenile correctional facilities, community-based adult correctional facilities, halfway houses, re-entry programs, and middle schools. The young persons served have ranged in age from preadolescence through adulthood. One example is the Minnesota Correctional Facility in Red Wing, which provides treatment, education, and transition services for chronic male juvenile offenders. After implementing and adapting EQUIP, Red Wing saw its recidivism rate drop by better than half (from 53% to 21%; see Gibbs, Potter, DiBiase and Devlin, in press).Book Reviews""For the first time, 'what we know' and 'what we know works' have been distilled into a highly readable, scientifically proven intervention program for antisocial youth.""-Laurie Rice, Journal for Juvenile Justice and Detention Services""The EQUIP Program is a must read. . . Gibbs and colleagues provide the reader with a succinct but clear conceptual understanding of the causes of antisocial behavior, cognitive treatment strategies, and methods to empirically validate the effectiveness of interventions.""-John Lemmon, Juvenile Justice Update""The beauty of this book is its organization and practicality. . . The EQUIP Program is realistic and would be beneficial for teachers, principals, counselors, social workers, psychologists, and those interested in making a positive impact on youth.""-Carol A. Yeager, The Peer Facilitator Quarterly

Book excerpt: "We didn't start the Servant Leadership Institute to become a consultant company or a leadership training company. We started it to share our knowledge of what we learned in implementing servant leadership." -- Art Barter Our journey into servant leadership began in 2004 with Art Barter's purchase of Datron World Communications. At that time, he was determined to create a new leadership environment, and over the next several years, that dream came true. With it came great success and significance. As a member of Art's leadership team, I had the privilege of participating in this culture shift to servant leadership. Through the creation of the Servant Leadership Institute, we have been able to show many aspiring servant leaders "how to do" servant leadership. One way we answered the "how-to" question was to publish a series of weekly leadership tips based on our experiences at Datron. The audience for these tips responded so positively, we decided to publish them in book form. We are honored to present the tips to you and ask you to make them a part of your leadership life. Discover how to live and lead with a servant's heart each and every day.

Book excerpt: This book presents Responsible Adult Culture (RAC), a truly comprehensive program for helping offenders to think and act responsibly. It provides the tools of the program with great clarity. In addition to exploring the needs of all offenders, the book addresses the special needs of both female and dual-diagnosis offenders. Responsible thinking means habitually seeing others and situations accurately, rather than in self-serving and egocentrically distorted ways. Because self-centered thinking is typically reinforced by negative group norms, RAC starts with the cultivation of a constructive climate (“mutual help” groups) to motivate change. Motivated group members then gain tools for responsible thinking through “equipment” (cognitive behavioral) meetings. These tools pertain to social skills, anger management, and the correction of self-centered thinking through social perspective taking (cognitive restructuring). Beyond documented reductions in distorted thinking and recidivism rates, RAC’s synergy or round-the-clock interpenetration of positive groups and tools promotes a safer and more humane institutional culture.

Book excerpt: "Scripture calls parents to train their children in the faith and to nurture their children's souls. Yet few parents actively engage in their children's spiritual development. How can churches best equip families to engage in their divine calling to disciple their children? Family ministry expert Dr. Timothy Paul Jones guides church leaders to develop a ministry system that equips parents to be the primary faith-trainers in their children's lives, moving beyond mere programming into a deeper spiritual life at home, within the church, and beyond. This resource is for leaders in the trenches--those who: see parents disengaging from their children's spiritual development; see too many students leave for college and drop out of church; have heard of 'family ministry, ' and just want to know more; or are frustrated with programmed ministries that fail to produce results. Based on solid research, this field guide unpacks how real-life churches can narrow the gap between present reality and the biblical ideal of faith-nurturing families"--Publisher description.
