Download or read book Equine Viruses written by Romain Paillot and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-04-30 with total page 230 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations has recently estimated that the world equid population exceeds 110 million. Working equids (horses, ponies, donkeys, and mules) remain essential to ensure the livelihood of poor communities around the world. In many developed countries, the equine industry has significant economical weight, with around 7 million horses in Europe alone. The close relationship between humans and equids and the fact that the athlete horse is the terrestrial mammal that travels the most worldwide after humans are important elements to consider in the transmission of pathogens and diseases, amongst equids and to other species. The potential effect of climate change on vector ecology and vector-borne diseases is also of concern for both human and animal health. In this Special Issue, we intend to explore our understanding of a panel of equine viruses, looking at their pathogenicity, their importance in terms of welfare and potential association with diseases, their economic importance and impact on performance, and how their identification can be helped by new technologies and methods.
Book Synopsis Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases of Livestock by : Jagadeesh Bayry
Download or read book Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases of Livestock written by Jagadeesh Bayry and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-02-07 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides comprehensive knowledge on diseases in livestock that are caused by viruses, parasites and bacteria. Emerging and re-emerging pathogens are presented in detail for various animal groups and in-depth insights into pathogenesis and epidemiology will be provided for each of them. In addition, state-of-the-art treatment possibilities, control measures as well as vaccination strategies are discussed. The recent years have witnessed a sharp increase in the number of emerging and re-emerging infectious diseases of livestock and many of these, including Influenza, Corona and Hanta are of public health importance. The reasons for this development are manifold:changes in the climate, life cycle of vectors and increased global travel. Also, due to extensive deforestation, livestock are increasingly coming in direct contact with wild animals that are reservoirs of many emerging pathogens. Recent progress in diagnosis and management of emerging infectious diseases are also topic of this book.

Book Synopsis The Geographical Distribution of Animal Viral Diseases by : Stewart Hal
Download or read book The Geographical Distribution of Animal Viral Diseases written by Stewart Hal and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2012-12-02 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Geographical Distribution of Animal Viral Diseases attempts to shed some light on the global distribution of 110 different viral diseases, mainly of livestock and companion animals. The world literature was screened for 110 different viruses, and maps were prepared. These maps delineate the global distribution of pathogenic viruses based on authenticated reports from a variety of reliable sources. Four viruses were categorized as affecting more than one species to a significant degree (astrovirus, rabies, rotaviruses, and Rift Valley fever). The largest number of maps involved viruses that affect humans. Of the 28 viruses a large number were from the California encephalitis group. Ten of the 28 viruses were reported only in the Eastern Hemisphere, 14 only in the Western Hemisphere, and four were worldwide. Birds were the next most frequently affected group with the 15 viruses, followed by pigs with 14 viruses. Overall the vector-borne viruses appear to have much sharper and clear-cut geographical boundaries than the others.

Book Synopsis Infectious Diseases of the Horse by : J.H. van der Kolk
Download or read book Infectious Diseases of the Horse written by J.H. van der Kolk and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2022-12-19 with total page 936 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A clinician and a pathologist collaborate to create a comprehensive yet practical book about established infectious diseases of horses, categorised according to the different pathogens. The book evaluates the latest diagnostic aids, including rapid developments in molecular biology, while emphasising that they are no substitute for clinical observation and skills. The majority of equine infectious diseases caused by microbes and parasites are covered - bacterial, viral, protozoan, fungal, ectoparasitic and helminthic. Practical appendices contain a list of differential diagnoses based on clinical signs to support clinical decision-making, a list of zoonoses and reportable diseases, and an elaborate illustrated appendix on clinical pathology and haematology. Thoroughly updated a decade after the release of the original text, the book continues to be concise and easy to understand and remains an important resource for uncommon conditions. It adds new sections on pythiosis, equine encephalosis/Peruvian horse sickness virus, Acinetobacter baumanii, enteric coronavirus-induced disease, and viral hepatitis, as well as updated nomenclature according to the latest reference databases. The most dynamic changes in veterinary medicine concern the development of new molecular diagnostic techniques and therapies, and these have been updated with most recent references throughout this second edition. Finally, the exceptional, full-colour clinical and microscopic images are showcased in a larger format. Infectious Diseases of the Horse is a valuable resource for all veterinary practitioners, scientists, pathologists, students, technicians and nurses working with horses.
