Book excerpt: The equilibrium temperature, density, and pressure of air behind incident normal shock waves have been calculated. The resulting tables include the effects of chemical reactions, excitation, dissociation, ionization, van der Waal and Coulomb forces. The tables are presented as functions of the ratio of the density behind the shock wave to the density at standard conditions in steps of 0.2. The temperature behind the shock wave T2 is a parameter which ranges from 2000K to 16,000K in 1000K steps. Two sets of tables, for initial conditions of 273.15 and 300.0K, are presented. The densities of air, as a real and as an ideal gas, are compared. (Author).

Book excerpt: Results are given for equilibrium properties behind incident and reflected normal shock waves in CO2-N2-He mixtures wherein the gas may be vibrationally excited but not chemically reacting. A rapid numerical iterative analysis is described, and the results are given in simple graphical form for convenient use in shock tube and shock tunnel experiments. The results are anticipated to be of particular use in determining reservoir conditions for shock tunnel experiments dealing with vibrational population inversions in rapidly expanding mixtures. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tables and graphs are given of normal shock wave parameters for equilibrium air. Composition of the air behind the shock is also tabulated. The results cover the range of velocities from 2000 to 26,000 fps in increments of 1000 fps and altitudes from sea level to 300,000 ft at 10,000ft intervals. The 1959 ARDC model atmosphere was used to specify ambient conditions ahead of the shock. An effective specific heat ratio, was tabulated which permits solution of oblique shock waves.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gas-dynamic properties which include the effects of dissociation, ionization, and intermolecular forces (van der Walls) are presented for incident and reflected shock waves in equilibrium imperfect air. Charts are presented for incident shock Mach numbers in the range from 6 to 30 into (ideal) air at a temperature of 300 K and pressures in the range from 10 to the minus 4 power to 10 to the 3rd power cm Hg. The temperature and density in any region do not exceed, respectively, 15,000 K and 158 amagats. In addition to the usual incident and reflected shock properties, stagnation conditions upstream and downstream and conditions immediately downstream of a standing shock wave are also presented. At pressures above one atmosphere in the undisturbed gas, the effects of the intermolecular forces on the gas-dynamic properties are demonstrated. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Similarity parameters are developed which govern the length of nonequilibrium zones behind normal shock waves. Non-equilibrium effects produced by both vibrational relaxation and dissociation are considered. The parameters can also account for arbitrary levels of free-stream vibrational energy or dissociation level. The validity of the parameters is examined using numerical computations of the properties of the non-equilibrium fields. These computations are made with the aid of experimentally based rate expressions. The parameters, when written in a form describing the variation of non-equilibrium zone length with Mach number, are shown to have acceptable accuracy. (Author).

This book was released on 1969 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accurate table for the gasdynamic properties behind incident and reflected normal shock waves was constructed for gaseous oxygen and nitrogen in dissociation equilibrium. The values of the temperature and pressure behind the respective shocks were computed to within 0.1% of the exact root. Second order correction factors for the molecular rotation function were also taken into account. The initial temperature is taken to be 298.13K for all cases, the initial pressures cover the range from 0.01 to 2000 mmHg and the incident shock Mach number is varied in increments of 0.1 from 6 to 18. The computer program was written in such a way that only slight modifications are needed for its use with other gases and other states of equilibrium. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical study of effects of free stream dissociation on the nonequilibrium gas properties behind shock waves is described. The analysis is based on a set of oblique shock relations which are generalized to include an arbitrary degree of nonequilibrium vibration, dissociation or ionization ahead of and/or behind the shock front. The frozen and equilibrium post-shock gas properties in air vs the ambient atom mass fraction and dissociation energy are presented at shock velocites ranging from 15,000 to 30,000 fps for normal and oblique hypersonic shock waves. Some of the potential effects of predissociation on the intervening relaxation process are briefly examined. Comparison is made with the properties behind geometrically-similar shock waves in a perfect undissociated ambient gas, independently of the preshock chemical history, for either the same shock velocity or the same total enthalpy. Significant changes in the post-shock density ratio, temperature, dissociation and ionization can occur if 10% or more of the total energy is tied up in preshock dissociation. Sharp reductions in the usual differences between the frozen and equilibrium properties associated with endothermic post-shock relaxation are observed when 50% or more of the total enthalpy is in preshock dissociation. Book excerpt: New calculations of the equilibrium gas proper ties behind a normal shock wave are presented based on the 1959 ARDC Model Atmosphere. Graphs of pressure, density, and temperat8re are pre sented for conditions behind a normal shock wave and at the stagnation point following an isen tropic compression, for high altitude hypersonic flight. The regime treated covers altitude from 100,000 feet to 400,000 feet in increments of 2000 feet, and a range of flight speeds from 10,000 to 25,000 feet per second. (Author).
