Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key factor in hydrate risk management for an oil-governing system is the stability of the emulsified water with gas hydrate formation. The kinetics of formation of cyclopentane hydrates is investigated in a water-in-oil emulsion using differential scanning calorimetry with the effect of surfactant Span 80. In a classical DSC experiment, an emulsion sample is subjected to a regular cooling and heating cycle between temperatures that include freezing and melting of the dispersed droplets. New phase equilibrium data of (cyclopentane hydrate + water = 60:40) emulsions, in the concentration range from 0.1 to 2% of Span 80, is determined at atmospheric pressure (101.325 kPa). Requirements for thermodynamic validity of the equilibrium temperatures measured by this technique are investigated and discussed in details. Also emulsion droplet size measurements are conducted using optical microscope. The thermal behavior of hydrate emulsions is coupled with droplet size measurement to understand effect of surface active agent (Span 80) on hydrate growth. These results confirm the interesting perspectives of application of this technique in the field of gas hydrate.

Book excerpt: This open access book, published in the Soft and Biological Matter series, presents an introduction to selected research topics in the broad field of flowing matter, including the dynamics of fluids with a complex internal structure -from nematic fluids to soft glasses- as well as active matter and turbulent phenomena. Flowing matter is a subject at the crossroads between physics, mathematics, chemistry, engineering, biology and earth sciences, and relies on a multidisciplinary approach to describe the emergence of the macroscopic behaviours in a system from the coordinated dynamics of its microscopic constituents. Depending on the microscopic interactions, an assembly of molecules or of mesoscopic particles can flow like a simple Newtonian fluid, deform elastically like a solid or behave in a complex manner. When the internal constituents are active, as for biological entities, one generally observes complex large-scale collective motions. Phenomenology is further complicated by the invariable tendency of fluids to display chaos at the large scales or when stirred strongly enough. This volume presents several research topics that address these phenomena encompassing the traditional micro-, meso-, and macro-scales descriptions, and contributes to our understanding of the fundamentals of flowing matter. This book is the legacy of the COST Action MP1305 “Flowing Matter”.

Book excerpt: This book investigates recent progress in synthesis of soft, hard and hybrid Janus structures and looks at processing strategy, such as emulsion polymerization, microfluidics, co-jetting and seeded growth. Also reviewed are both the experimental and theoretical studies on the unique self-assembly behaviour of Janus particles.Janus particles are special types of nanoparticles whose surfaces have two or more distinct physical properties. These two hemistructures are of different composition and functionality, offering promising potential for application through the multiple combinations possible — areas in which Janus structures can be applied include drug delivery, magnetic biomarkers, bactericides, tailored plasmon resonance, photocatalysis and nanoengines. Encapsulating a wealth of research on Janus structures, this review of the literature is specifically designed to benefit graduate students and researchers in the fields of chemistry, materials science, engineering, biotechnology and applied physics, as well as practitioners in these industries.
