This book was released on 1995-04-07 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Solutions to partial differential equations or systems often, over specific time periods, exhibit smooth behaviour. Given sufficient time, however, they almost invariably undergo a brutal change in behaviour, and this phenomenon has become known as blowup. In this book, the author provides an overview of what is known about this situation and discusses many of the open problems concerning it.

Download or read book Hyperbolic Equations and Related Topics written by Sigeru Mizohata and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2014-05-10 with total page 458 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Hyperbolic Equations and Related Topics covers the proceedings of the Taniguchi International Symposium, held in Katata, Japan on August 27-31, 1984 and in Kyoto, Japan on September 3-5, 1984. The book focuses on the mathematical analyses involved in hyperbolic equations. The selection first elaborates on complex vector fields; holomorphic extension of CR functions and related problems; second microlocalization and propagation of singularities for semi-linear hyperbolic equations; and scattering matrix for two convex obstacles. Discussions focus on the construction of asymptotic solutions, singular vector fields and Leibniz formula, second microlocalization along a Lagrangean submanifold, and hypo-analytic structures. The text then ponders on the Cauchy problem for effectively hyperbolic equations and for uniformly diagonalizable hyperbolic systems in Gevrey classes. The book takes a look at generalized Hamilton flows and singularities of solutions of the hyperbolic Cauchy problem and analytic and Gevrey well-posedness of the Cauchy problem for second order weakly hyperbolic equations with coefficients irregular in time. The selection is a dependable reference for researchers interested in hyperbolic equations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of the 1967 Battelle Rencontres was so much appre ciated by the participants and organizers of this experimental set-up that it was soon decided to go on with the experiment. Mathematicians and physicists had found a very suitable frame to overcome their natural shyness, to get occasionally interested into each others' work, to talk 1968 Rencontres have about it, and eventually to know each other. The been organized with the same idea in mind, and even somewhat enlarged in the following sense: the topic chosen - hyperbolic equations and waves - has proved a cornerstone of physics for more than a century and extends over most fields of contemporary physics. It follows immediately that the wide range of physicists concerned could not be represented by more than a couple of specialists in any single field. Thus, aside from bridging the gap between mathematicians and physicists, the 1968 Recontres provided a rather unique occasion to plug many intra disciplinary gaps among physicists. This made the Rencontres quite unpredictable as to how people would - and could - interact, and created a very stimulating environ ment for an unprecedented intellectual venture. From the outside, it may very well look like a hodge-podge of quite unrelated ideas. But it was much less so at the level of day-to-day discussions and informal gatherings where all slowly acquired a comprehensive synthetic view of the subject.
Book Synopsis Carleman Inequalities by : Nicolas Lerner
Download or read book Carleman Inequalities written by Nicolas Lerner and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-05-18 with total page 576 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over the past 25 years, Carleman estimates have become an essential tool in several areas related to partial differential equations such as control theory, inverse problems, or fluid mechanics. This book provides a detailed exposition of the basic techniques of Carleman Inequalities, driven by applications to various questions of unique continuation. Beginning with an elementary introduction to the topic, including examples accessible to readers without prior knowledge of advanced mathematics, the book's first five chapters contain a thorough exposition of the most classical results, such as Calderón's and Hörmander's theorems. Later chapters explore a selection of results of the last four decades around the themes of continuation for elliptic equations, with the Jerison-Kenig estimates for strong unique continuation, counterexamples to Cauchy uniqueness of Cohen and Alinhac & Baouendi, operators with partially analytic coefficients with intermediate results between Holmgren's and Hörmander's uniqueness theorems, Wolff's modification of Carleman's method, conditional pseudo-convexity, and more. With examples and special cases motivating the general theory, as well as appendices on mathematical background, this monograph provides an accessible, self-contained basic reference on the subject, including a selection of the developments of the past thirty years in unique continuation.
Book Synopsis Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics, Applications by : Heinrich Freistühler
Download or read book Hyperbolic Problems: Theory, Numerics, Applications written by Heinrich Freistühler and published by Birkhäuser. This book was released on 2013-12-01 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Eighth International Conference on Hyperbolic Problems - Theory, Nu merics, Applications, was held in Magdeburg, Germany, from February 27 to March 3, 2000. It was attended by over 220 participants from many European countries as well as Brazil, Canada, China, Georgia, India, Israel, Japan, Taiwan, und the USA. There were 12 plenary lectures, 22 further invited talks, and around 150 con tributed talks in parallel sessions as well as posters. The speakers in the parallel sessions were invited to provide a poster in order to enhance the dissemination of information. Hyperbolic partial differential equations describe phenomena of material or wave transport in physics, biology and engineering, especially in the field of fluid mechanics. Despite considerable progress, the mathematical theory is still strug gling with fundamental open problems concerning systems of such equations in multiple space dimensions. For various applications the development of accurate and efficient numerical schemes for computation is of fundamental importance. Applications touched in these proceedings concern one-phase and multiphase fluid flow, phase transitions, shallow water dynamics, elasticity, extended ther modynamics, electromagnetism, classical and relativistic magnetohydrodynamics, cosmology. Contributions to the abstract theory of hyperbolic systems deal with viscous and relaxation approximations, front tracking and wellposedness, stability ofshock profiles and multi-shock patterns, traveling fronts for transport equations. Numerically oriented articles study finite difference, finite volume, and finite ele ment schemes, adaptive, multiresolution, and artificial dissipation methods.
Download or read book Physics on Manifolds written by M. Flato and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 365 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains the proceedings of the Colloquium "Analysis, Manifolds and Physics" organized in honour of Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat by her friends, collaborators and former students, on June 3, 4 and 5, 1992 in Paris. Its title accurately reflects the domains to which Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat has made essential contributions. Since the rise of General Relativity, the geometry of Manifolds has become a non-trivial part of space-time physics. At the same time, Functional Analysis has been of enormous importance in Quantum Mechanics, and Quantum Field Theory. Its role becomes decisive when one considers the global behaviour of solutions of differential systems on manifolds. In this sense, General Relativity is an exceptional theory in which the solutions of a highly non-linear system of partial differential equations define by themselves the very manifold on which they are supposed to exist. This is why a solution of Einstein's equations cannot be physically interpreted before its global behaviour is known, taking into account the entire hypothetical underlying manifold. In her youth, Yvonne Choquet-Bruhat contributed in a spectacular way to this domain stretching between physics and mathematics, when she gave the proof of the existence of solutions to Einstein's equations on differential manifolds of a quite general type. The methods she created have been worked out by the French school of mathematics, principally by Jean Leray. Her first proof of the local existence and uniqueness of solutions of Einstein's equations inspired Jean Leray's theory of general hyperbolic systems.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 484 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Most of the problems posed by Physics to Mathematical Analysis are boundary value problems for partial differential equations and systems. Among them, the problems concerning linear evolution equations have an outstanding position in the study of the physical world, namely in fluid dynamics, elastodynamics, electromagnetism, plasma physics and so on. This Institute was devoted to these problems. It developed essentially the new methods inspired by Functional Analysis and specially by the theories of Hilbert spaces, distributions and ultradistributions. The lectures brought a detailed exposition of the novelties in this field by world known specialists. We held the Institute at the Sart Tilman Campus of the University of Liege from September 6 to 17, 1976. It was attended by 99 participants, 79 from NATO Countries [Belgium (30), Canada (2), Denmark (I), France (15), West Germany (9), Italy (5), Turkey (3), USA (14)] and 20 from non NATO Countries [Algeria (2), Australia (3), Austria (I), Finland (1), Iran (3), Ireland (I), Japan (6), Poland (1), Sweden (I), Zair (1)].
