Book excerpt: Excerpt from Equation of State and Phase Transition of the Spherical Lattice Gas The spherical lattice gas is a simplified model of a gas. We introduce it because we can deduce its equation of state statistical mechanically. We find that it undergoes phase transition in three dimensions, although not in one or two dimensions. We also find that its isotherms and transition curve, shown in Figure 9 are in qualitative agreement with experimental curves. However they exhibit a physically unreasonable negative pressure at very large and very small Specific volumes. This can be traced to an inadequacy of the model for such specific volumes. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book differs from its predecessor, Lieb & Mattis Mathematical Physics in One Dimension, in a number of important ways. Classic discoveries which once had to be omitted owing to lack of space ? such as the seminal paper by Fermi, Pasta and Ulam on lack of ergodicity of the linear chain, or Bethe's original paper on the Bethe ansatz ? can now be incorporated. Many applications which did not even exist in 1966 (some of which were originally spawned by the publication of Lieb & Mattis) are newly included. Among these, this new book contains critical surveys of a number of important developments: the exact solution of the Hubbard model, the concept of spinons, the Haldane gap in magnetic spin-one chains, bosonization and fermionization, solitions and the approach to thermodynamic equilibrium, quantum statistical mechanics, localization of normal modes and eigenstates in disordered chains, and a number of other contemporary concerns.

Book excerpt: This is a textbook which gradually introduces the student to the statistical mechanical study of the different phases of matter and to the phase transitions between them. Throughout, only simple models of both ordinary and soft matter are used but these are studied in full detail. The subject is developed in a pedagogical manner, starting from the basics, going from the simple ideal systems to the interacting systems, and ending with the more modern topics. The textbook provides the student with a complete overview, intentionally at an introductory level, of the theory of phase transitions. All equations and deductions are included.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The book is devoted to the physics of plasma at high density, which has been compressed so strongly that the effects of interparticle interactions and non-ideality govern its behavior. Interest in this non-traditional plasma has been generated in recent years when states of matter with high concentration of energy became accessible experimentally as the basis of modern technologies and facilities. The greatest part of the matter in the Universe is in this exotic state. In this book, the methods of generation and diagnostics of strongly coupled plasmas are presented, along with the main theoretical methods and experimental results on thermodynamical, kinetic and optical properties. Particular attention is given to fast developing modern directions of strongly coupled plasma physics such as metallization of dielectrics and dielectrization of metals, non-neutral plasmas, dusty plasmas and their crystallization. The book is written for physicists and astrophysicists, engineers, and material scientists.

Book excerpt: Lattice-gas cellular automata (LGCA) and lattice Boltzmann models (LBM) are relatively new and promising methods for the numerical solution of nonlinear partial differential equations. The book provides an introduction for graduate students and researchers. Working knowledge of calculus is required and experience in PDEs and fluid dynamics is recommended. Some peculiarities of cellular automata are outlined in Chapter 2. The properties of various LGCA and special coding techniques are discussed in Chapter 3. Concepts from statistical mechanics (Chapter 4) provide the necessary theoretical background for LGCA and LBM. The properties of lattice Boltzmann models and a method for their construction are presented in Chapter 5.

Book excerpt: Follow a time line of physics history and one thing becomes readily apparent - many of this century's major milestones were first documented in the pages of "The Physical Review." Now the most important of this research is brought together in this landmark book and CD-ROM package. Along with the celebrated work of luminaries such as Langmuir, Bohr, Wheeler, Feynman, this volume brings to light more obscure, though no less critical research. Together with papers from Physical Review Letters, this unique work puts more than 1,000 papers at your fingertips.
