Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Context-free grammars are adequate for specifying the structure of almost all programming languages. But in such specifications, it is difficult and time consuming to analyze a statement in the programming language to recognize its structural components. Precedence grammars, a subset of the context-free grammars, were, developed for quick and easy statement analysis and yet are adequate for describing the structure of most programming languages. We present a historical development of precedence grammars and show some of the formal language relations between the various classes of precedence languages.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This comprehensive book provides the fundamental concepts of automata and compiler design. Beginning with the basics of automata and formal languages, the book discusses the concepts of regular set and regular expression, context-free grammar and pushdown automata in detail. Then, the book explains the various compiler writing principles and simultaneously discusses the logical phases of a compiler and the environment in which they do their job. It also elaborates the concepts of syntax analysis, bottom-up parsing, syntax-directed translation, semantic analysis, optimization, and storage organization. Finally, the text concludes with a discussion on the role of code generator and its basic issues such as instruction selection, register allocation, target programs and memory management. The book is primarily designed for one semester course in Automata and Compiler Design for undergraduate and postgraduate students of Computer Science and Information Technology. It will also be helpful to those preparing for competitive examinations like GATE, DRDO, PGCET, etc. KEY FEATURES: Covers both automata and compiler design so that the readers need not have to consult two books separately. Includes plenty of solved problems to enable the students to assimilate the fundamental concepts. Provides a large number of end-of-chapter exercises and review questions as assignments and model question papers to guide the students for examinations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This textbook describes the theory and the pragmatics of using and engineering high-level software languages – also known as modeling or domain-specific languages (DSLs) – for creating quality software. This includes methods, design patterns, guidelines, and testing practices for defining the syntax and the semantics of languages. While remaining close to technology, the book covers multiple paradigms and solutions, avoiding a particular technological silo. It unifies the modeling, the object-oriented, and the functional-programming perspectives on DSLs. The book has 13 chapters. Chapters 1 and 2 introduce and motivate DSLs. Chapter 3 kicks off the DSL engineering lifecycle, describing how to systematically develop abstract syntax by analyzing a domain. Chapter 4 addresses the concrete syntax, including the systematic engineering of context-free grammars. Chapters 5 and 6 cover the static semantics – with basic constraints as a starting point and type systems for advanced DSLs. Chapters 7 (Transformation), 8 (Interpretation), and 9 (Generation) describe different paradigms for designing and implementing the dynamic semantics, while covering testing and other kinds of quality assurance. Chapter 10 is devoted to internal DSLs. Chapters 11 to 13 show the application of DSLs and engage with simpler alternatives to DSLs in a highly distinguished domain: software variability. These chapters introduce the underlying notions of software product lines and feature modeling. The book has been developed based on courses on model-driven software engineering (MDSE) and DSLs held by the authors. It aims at senior undergraduate and junior graduate students in computer science or software engineering. Since it includes examples and lessons from industrial and open-source projects, as well as from industrial research, practitioners will also find it a useful reference. The numerous examples include code in Scala 3, ATL, Alloy, C#, F#, Groovy, Java, JavaScript, Kotlin, OCL, Python, QVT, Ruby, and Xtend. The book contains as many as 277 exercises. The associated code repository facilitates learning and using the examples in a course.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A language acquisition device is an abstract model of grammar inference, under well formulated conditions. It is a black box which receives primary linguistic data, and produces a grammar. The study presents a model and computer program which have practical value for some potential applications, and also some implications for child language learning. The primary linguistic data available to the acquisition device includes samples of sentences, sample of nonsentences and the set of possible structural descriptions of the sentences in the language. The model is then able to infer a grammar in the class of operator precedence grammars. (Author).

Book excerpt: This revised and expanded new edition elucidates the elegance and simplicity of the fundamental theory underlying formal languages and compilation. Retaining the reader-friendly style of the 1st edition, this versatile textbook describes the essential principles and methods used for defining the syntax of artificial languages, and for designing efficient parsing algorithms and syntax-directed translators with semantic attributes. Features: presents a novel conceptual approach to parsing algorithms that applies to extended BNF grammars, together with a parallel parsing algorithm (NEW); supplies supplementary teaching tools at an associated website; systematically discusses ambiguous forms, allowing readers to avoid pitfalls; describes all algorithms in pseudocode; makes extensive usage of theoretical models of automata, transducers and formal grammars; includes concise coverage of algorithms for processing regular expressions and finite automata; introduces static program analysis based on flow equations.
