Those who heard the lectures requested that they be published for their benefit and for the benefit of others who might care to read them. It has taken the spare hours of several months to prepare the lectures for the press. Prof. B. C. Deweese of Transylvania University did me the honour to read the manuscript. I am indebted to him for corrections and suggestions. I am under obligation to Charles T. Paul, President of the College of Missions, for the title. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Christian Epoch-Makers: The Story of the Great Missionary Eras in the History of Christianity The study of missions under the auspices of the various missionary Organizations is now being prosecuted by a multitude of people, young and old, with a great deal of hearty good-will and an energy most praiseworthy, but with very little system. It is certain that the result of such study will be the accumulation of a quantity of miscellaneous information about missions, but very little knowledge. The reading of some good general outline of missionary history is indispensable, if our young people would avoid a serious case of mental dyspepsia. It is not pretended that this is the only book available, but it is believed to have certain features that will make it both welcome and effective. At all events, the author cherishes the hope that whoever carefully studies Chris tian epoch-makers will find that, if he has learned less than he might have wished, he has nothing to unlearn. Download or read book Modern Missions written by Robert Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-03-24 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Missions: Their Trials and Triumphs In the following pages an attempt has been made to bring together, within brief compass, the more important facts relating to modern Protestant missions. Special prominence is given to their earlier history, inasmuch as a knowledge of it is essential to a proper estimate of their present position, and also because there were exhibited, during the period referred to, deeds of heroic self-sacrifice that deserve to be held in lasting remembrance. The work has extended far beyond the limits originally contemplated, and, in consequence, it has been found necessary to reserve a large portion of the material. The issue of a second volume will depend upon the measure of acceptance which the Christian public may give to the present one. The fields thus reluctantly reserved are Greenland, Labrador, South America, Syria, Armenia, Persia, and Egypt, as well as missions to them Jews. The narrative must be regarded as little more than a mere outline. Very much has been left unsaid which might have been with advantage recorded. Many honoured names are altogether omitted, while others are alluded to only incidentally. The space, too, allotted to the various missions may not be, in some cases, in proportion to their relative importance. Download or read book Missions and Modern Thought (Classic Reprint) written by William Owen Carver and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-08 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Missions and Modern Thought Every institution and activity of Christianity finds itself challenged at the bar of modern thought. The glory of this age is its skepticism which is the natural outcome of its extensive discoveries. It is not to be taken for granted that modern thought is always right and that all that is not modern must either give place to what is new or adjust itself to it. The adjustment must Often be made from the other side. A new railway compels many established things to make way for it, but some of the mountains and the rivers compel the new railway to take them into account, and adjust itself to their permanence. Yet our life and work are in the modern world and it is our business at least to' seek to understand the relations of whatever we deem worth while to the spirit and tendencies of our times. It is hoped that the following pages may contribute somewhat to defining the relations of the missionary enterprise of the Church to the thought of the time in which we live. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Modern Missions in the East: Their Methods, Successes, and Limitations Tmc substance of this volume was first presented in the form of lectures in Andover Theological Seminary, on the Hyde Foundation, and subsequently in Yale Divinity School and Beloit College. The contents are based upon a twenty months' missionary journey around the world vyith the express purpose of studying the mission work of various denominations. Since my return I have given months of special attention to the subject, that the discus sion might have a more permanent value than that of a simple report of things seen upon the field. I have hoped that in some ways such a volume might serve as a text book for those who wish to look into the science of mis. Book Synopsis Questions and Phases of Modern Missions (Classic Reprint) by : Frank F. Ellinwood
Download or read book Questions and Phases of Modern Missions (Classic Reprint) written by Frank F. Ellinwood and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Questions and Phases of Modern Missions The successive chapters of this book are topical and claim no logical order. They present each a different aspect of Christian missions. The facts and principles stated are the result of many years of observation in the practical work of correspondence and administration. The difficulties and encouragements of the foreign missionary work are fairly considered, though with a growing conviction that the various elements of progress which unite in the one great world movement far exceed all obstacles. Some of the chapters deal with questions of missionary policy. The age of romance in missions is past, and the plain practical service must be studied, and so far as possible the best methods must be devised. It would be strange if the new century now about to open should not reveal the necessity for some important changes in administration and in the forms of work upon the field. This book was released on 2016-11-20 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Miracles of Missions, or the Modern Marvels in the History of Missionary Enterprise These observations of Dr. Christlieb have suggested the somewhat emphatic title of this book. We have chosen to call it The Miracles of Missions, notwithstanding the objections frequently urged to the use of the word miracles for it must be remembered that a miracle, as the word indicates, is noth ing more nor less than a wonder to which God appeals as a sign of divine presence and power; and all that we mean by this term as now used is that, in the history of modern missions, there are amazing wonders of di vine interposition and human transformation which admit of no adequate explanation if we deny the divine element. The author would simply add, before pre senting a few of these instances somewhat in detail, that the impression with which he began these studies, now more than thirty years ago, has daily and hourly increased as these studies have been further prosecuted. With these prefatory remarks we submit to the candid judgment of the reader the testi mony of missionary biography and history.
