In his Preface Hagger shows very clearly that his Baroque vision was behind, and grew into, his Universalism, his philosophy and worldview of the unity of the universe whose development can be traced in his Selected Letters and Collected Prefaces, and in the companion volume to this work The Essentials of Universalism (all published by O-Books). These 100 verse selections confirm that his Baroque vision is inspired by the 17th century (by the Metaphysical poets, Milton and Dryden), but also by the 18th and 19th centuries (by Pope, Wordsworth and Tennyson).

In other respects too, there was little evidence that Western Germany would emulate the 'crisis situation' affecting other West European states. Yet 'stability' is not an immobile condition, and since it results from the interaction of a number of factors - political, social and economic - no single explanation of Germany's performance is likely to be convincing. Furthermore, West Germany has to face several unresolved problems which, although not pointing to a fundamental crisis, remind us that the concept of 'stability' has to be approached with care. The essays in this book reflect these ideas, and they explore a range of issues that are central to the understanding of contemporary German politics. During the June 1967 Middle East war, Israeli forces seized the Sinai Peninsula and the Gaza Strip from Egypt, the Golan Heights from Syria, and the West Bank and East Jerusalem from Jordan. This conflict was followed, in October 1973, by a joint Egyptian-Syrian attack on Israel, which threatened to drag the United States and the Soviet Union into a confrontation even though the superpowers had seemingly embraced the idea of détente. This conflict contributed significantly to the ensuing deterioration of US-Soviet relations. The standard explanation for why détente failed is that the Soviet Union, driven mainly by its Communist ideology, pursued a highly aggressive foreign policy during the 1970s. In the Middle East specifically, the conventional wisdom is that the Soviets played a destabilizing role by encouraging the Arabs in their conflict with Israel in an effort to undermine the US position in the region for Cold War gain.
