This book was released on 2010 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: A habitat is composed of a variety of microhabitats identified by different physical and biological characteristics. This study documented Ephemeroptera, Plecoptera, and Trichoptera distributions with respect to natural and manipulated microhabitats and depth at three field sites. Microhabitat distributions may be affected by interactions with heterospecifics. This study also examined conspecific and heterospecific microhabitat selection differences between Helicopsyche sp. and Hydropsyche occidentalis (Trichoptera) in laboratory streams. Insect communities across stream sites, microhabitats and depths were significantly different. Specific (focal) species were significantly differentially distributed across microhabitats regardless of their availabilities. There were significant effects of microhabitat, species and relationship (conspecific vs. heterospecific) trends on Trichoptera species' abundances. Community structure can differ over relatively short distances and microhabitat species' distributions were not related to microhabitat availability. Also, heterospecific interactions play a role in driving Hydropsyche occidentalis microhabitat selection while in the presence of Helicopsyche sp.
Book Synopsis Distribution and Ecological Preferences of European Freshwater Organisms: Plecoptera by : Wolfram Graf
Download or read book Distribution and Ecological Preferences of European Freshwater Organisms: Plecoptera written by Wolfram Graf and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book series provides comprehensive information on distribution and ecological preferences of European freshwater organisms. The first three volumes deal with caddisflies (Trichoptera), stoneflies (Plecoptera) and mayflies (Ephemeroptera), respectively. The present volume on Plecoptera has been compiled by reviewing more than 1,400 literature references. It covers 571 European stonefly species, categorised into 40 genera and 7 families. The distribution within the European ecoregions as well as a wide variety of ecological preferences are presented as numerical codes, including feeding types, habitat and current preferences, temperature and altitude preferences, life duration and flight periods, and the response to environmental stress. Together with the other issues of the series, this compilation is a unique tool for analysing freshwater biota, both for basic and applied purposes such as ecosystem monitoring and the implementation of European directives in the fi eld of environmental protection.

Download or read book Stream Ecology written by J. David Allan and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Running waters are enormously diverse, ranging from torrential mountain brooks, to large lowland rivers, to great river systems whose basins occupy subcontinents. While this diversity makes river ecosystems seem overwhelmingly complex, a central theme of this volume is that the processes acting in running waters are general, although the settings are often unique. The past two decades have seen major advances in our knowledge of the ecology of streams and rivers. New paradigms have emerged, such as the river continuum and nutrient spiraling. Community ecologists have made impressive advances in documenting the occurrence of species interactions. The importance of physical processes in rivers has attracted increased attention, particularly the areas of hydrology and geomorphology, and the inter-relationships between physical and biological factors have become better understood. And as is true for every area of ecology during the closing years of the twentieth century it has become apparent that the study of streams and rivers cannot be carried out by excluding the role of human activities, nor can we ignore the urgency of the need for conservation. These developments are brought together in Stream Ecology: Structure and function of running waters, designed to serve as a text for advanced undergraduate and graduate students, and as a reference book for specialists in stream ecology and related fields.

Download or read book Indian Insects written by S Ramani and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2019-10-16 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insects are the most interesting and diverse group of organisms on earth, many of which are useful as pollinators of crops and wild plants while others are useful as natural enemies keeping pestiferous insects in check. It is important to conserve these insects for our survival and for this the diversity of insect species inhabiting the different ecosystems of our country must be known. The cornerstone to studies of any kind of organismal diversity is their taxonomic identity. Even after over two and half centuries of studies, so little is known of the insect wealth of our country. It has contributions from taxonomists who have been studying Indian insects for long, this book offers up to date information on many important groups of Indian insects seeking to fill the lacuna of a long felt need for a comprehensive work on the taxonomy of Indian insects. Salient features: Provides an up-to-date taxonomy of major insect groups of India Presents identification keys with illustrations of several important groups of Indian insects Gives a new insight into why insects are so abundant Addresses fundamental questions in mechanoreception and cross kingdom interactions using insects as model systems Indian Insects: Diversity and Science is a festschrift to Professor C. A. Viraktamath, an insect taxonomist par excellence. It has been designed to cater to the needs of academicians, researchers and students who wish to identify insects collected from local environments and will be an invaluable aid for those working in the areas of systematics, ecology, behaviour, diversity and the conservation of insects.

Book Synopsis Small Water Bodies of the Western Balkans by : Vladimir Pešić
Download or read book Small Water Bodies of the Western Balkans written by Vladimir Pešić and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2021-11-18 with total page 449 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The small water bodies such as headwater streams, springs, ditches, small lakes, and ponds are critical to maintaining freshwater biodiversity. This is especially true for Dinaric karst, where they are often the only water bodies present. However, despite their importance, they remain widely overlooked and excluded from government policies like the EU Water Framework Directive. This book includes information on different aspects of these essential but still neglected habitats. This book intends to be of interest to a wide range of audiences, from researchers and conservationists to the public and decision-makers.
