Download or read book Printed Ephemera written by John Lewis and published by ACC Distribution. This book was released on 1990 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When this book was first published in 1962 it was not only the first book on the subject, but John Lewis unwittingly invented the term 'Printed Ephemera'. This is virtually a facsimile of that original 1962 edition but with many of the former monochrome subjects now printed in full colour and with a new foreword by the Author. The book surveys the art of the jobbing printer, from Caxton's time to the 1960's, by studying the changing uses of type and letter forms in English and American printing. Handbills, certificates, tickets and trade cards are all illustrated showing the changes in design of type faces and the changing relationships between text and illustration. The book contains a fully illustrated chronological glossary of type and a fully classified index under six headings: General; Artists, Designers and Typographers; Engravers and Lithographers; Printers; Type-founders; Type designers; Type-setters; Type faces. 'Printed Ephemera' is a classic book and the essential work of reference on a subject which has become increasingly popular and collectable. Many Printed Ephemera societies now exist in countries as far apart as the U.S.A., Canada and Australia.

Download or read book Tat* written by Andy Altmann and published by Circa. This book was released on 2020-11-30 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Tat* is a bit of a graphic designer's curse. Walk into any design studio and you will see tat pinned to the walls or placed with loving care on top of a computer screen. Even the purist will have a secret cache hidden away somewhere. Andy Altmann began collecting tat while he was on his Foundation course, getting ready for an interview at St Martins School of Art. He'd been asked to present a sketchbook, but worried that he couldn't draw very well, he decided to start a scrapbook: "I rummaged through the drawers at home and found some football cards from the late 1960s and early '70s (plenty of Georgie Best), an instruction leaflet from an old Hoover, Christmas cracker jokes, and so on. Then I started on the magazines, cutting out images of anything that interested me. And finally I took myself off to the college library, where I photocopied things from books before reaching for the scissors and glue." It was the beginning of a significant collecting habit. So what it is that makes a piece of graphic tat interesting? Is it the 'retro' thing - a fascination with a bygone age, the primitive printing techniques, the naivety of the design, or the use of color? All of the above, of course, but it's not quite that simple. "Occasionally people offer me something they've found that they think I might like", says Andy. "But usually they're wrong - it doesn't excite me at all. The magic is missing." To a graphic designer, most the content of this book can safely be regarded as 'bad' design. But there is some magic in each and every piece that has made Andy either pick it up off the street, trail through online links, or enter some dodgy looking shop on the other side of the world just to snap it up. Here you'll find everything from sweet wrappers to flash cards, from soap powder boxes to speedway flyers, from wrestling programmes to bus tickets. More tat than you can shake a stick at. Taken together, it represents a lifetime of gleeful hunting and gathering. * tat (noun) - anything that looks cheap, is of low quality, or in bad condition; junk, rubbish, debris, detritus, crap, shite

Book Synopsis The Arts and Crafts Movement by : Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson
Download or read book The Arts and Crafts Movement written by Thomas James Cobden-Sanderson and published by Alpha Edition. This book was released on 1905 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Have nothing in your house that you do not know to be useful, or believe to be beautiful." This quote alone from William Morris could summarise the ideology of the Arts & Crafts movement, which triggered a veritable reform in the applied arts in England. Founded by John Ruskin, then put into practice by William Morris, the Arts & Crafts movement promoted revolutionary ideas in Victorian England. In the middle of the "soulless" Industrial Era, when objects were standardised, the Arts & Crafts movement proposed a return to the aesthetic at the core of production. The work of artisans and meticulous design thus became the heart of this new ideology, which influenced styles throughout the world, translating the essential ideas of Arts & Crafts into design, architecture and painting.
