Book Synopsis Environmental UV Radiation: Impact on Ecosystems and Human Health and Predictive Models by : Francesco Ghetti
Download or read book Environmental UV Radiation: Impact on Ecosystems and Human Health and Predictive Models written by Francesco Ghetti and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2006 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication originates from the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Environmental Radiation: Impact on Ecosystems and Human Health and Predictive Models, held in Pisa, Italy, in June 2001. The book offers not only basic information on the action mechanisms of UV radiation on ecosystems and various biological systems, but also a picture of the possible scenarios of the long-term global increase of environmental UV radiation, with emphasis on the research aspects aimed at the proper quantitative assessment of risk factors and the formulation of reliable predictive models. The purpose of the authors is to present a critical discussion on how changes in UV radiation will affect ecosystems and the biological processes needed to sustain life on Earth and to provide useful hints for future actions of governmental and international agencies, as well as non-governmental organizations. The book is structured in four sections: the first one is devoted to a general overview of the consequences of ozone depletion and to the basic concepts of radiation measurements and monitoring; the other three sections are devoted to the effects on plants, aquatic ecosystems and human health.
Book Synopsis UV Radiation in Global Climate Change by : Wei Gao
Download or read book UV Radiation in Global Climate Change written by Wei Gao and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-09-08 with total page 544 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Numerous studies report that ultraviolet (UV) radiation is harmful to living organisms and detrimental to human health. Growing concerns regarding the increased levels of UV-B radiation that reach the earth's surface have led to the development of ground- and space-based measurement programs. Further study is needed on the measurement, modeling, and effects of UV radiation. The chapters of this book describe the research conducted across the globe over the past three decades in the areas of: (1) current and predicted levels of UV radiation and its associated impact on ecosystems and human health, as well as economic and social implications; (2) new developments in UV instrumentation, advances in calibration (ground- and satellite-based), measurement methods, modeling efforts, and their applications; and (3) the effects of global climate change on UV radiation. Dr. Wei Gao is a Senior Research Scientist and the Director of the USDA UV-B Monitoring and Research Program, Natural Resource Ecology Laboratory, Colorado State University. Dr. Gao is a SPIE fellow and serves as the Editor-in-Chief for the Journal of Applied Remote Sensing. Dr. Daniel L. Schmoldt is the National Program Leader for instrumentation and sensors at the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) of the U.S. Department of Agriculture. Dr. Schmoldt served as joint Editor-in-Chief of the journal, Computers & Electronics in Agriculture, from 1997 to 2004. Dr. James R. Slusser retired in 2007 from the USDA UV-B Monitoring and Research Program at Colorado State University. Book Synopsis The Impact of the Space Environment on Microbial Growth and Behavior by : Camilla Urbaniak
Download or read book The Impact of the Space Environment on Microbial Growth and Behavior written by Camilla Urbaniak and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-04-02 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Microorganisms play an important role in life on Earth and can adapt and survive in harsh and changing environments. Their aptitude to thrive under hostile conditions is reflected by their survival and activity in some of the most extreme environments on Earth and their presence and growth in low earth orbit and outer space. Spaceflight and the space environment have a unique set of stressors compared to Earth (microgravity, galactic cosmic radiation, solar UV radiation, space vacuum, thermal extremes) that microbes are exposed to, but how they adapt and respond is still poorly understood. Studies to date, though, have shown that these responses can range from being beneficial for human exploration to negatively impact long duration missions. Hence, investigating the reaction of microorganisms to space conditions, the alterations in their physiology and virulence, not only helps shed light on the molecular basis of tolerance, but has implications for both space exploration and astrobiological missions.
Book Synopsis Beyond the Visible by : Pedro J. Aphalo
Download or read book Beyond the Visible written by Pedro J. Aphalo and published by Helsingin yliopisto. This book was released on 2012-11-02 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beyond the Visible: A handbook of best practice in plant UV photobiology presents methods for research on the responses of plants to ultraviolet (UV) radiation. The knowledge needed to make informed decisions about manipulation and quantification of UV radiation is summarized. Practical recommendations for obtaining reliable and relevant data and interpretations are given. The handbook covers research both on terrestrial and aquatic plants and it deals with experimentation on ecological, eco-physiological and physiological questions. The handbook includes 115 figures, mostly in colour, 19 tables and 12 text boxes. It is the result of the activities of COST action FA0906 "UV4growth", and it includes contributions by 17 authors. From the foreword by Dr. Marcel A. K. Jansen: This book ... is an important contribution towards such sound experimental design, promoting both "good practice" in UV-B manipulation, as well as "standardisation" of methodologies. Writing an authoritative book that will steer experimental approaches over the coming years, can not easily be done by an individual, but rather requires the concerted effort of a team of expert scientists. ... This is surely an excellent example of a concerted, Europeanwide activity that will boost the plant UV-B research field in Europe and beyond, for years to come.

Book Synopsis Implementing Ecological Integrity by : Philippe J. Crabbé
Download or read book Implementing Ecological Integrity written by Philippe J. Crabbé and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-06-30 with total page 494 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of ecological integrity is used in environmental policy but is usually left undefined. The definition proposed by the Integrity Group is quite demanding: it tends to focus on a nature that has been impacted by human activity as little as possible, viz., located in remote areas, emphasising and protecting its self organising capacities for life as a product of the natural history of ecosystems. The demand is for an ethical reverence for life in all its manifestations. In its study of ecological integrity the book's strength is its true multidisciplinarity, strongly grounded in ecology, thermodynamics, ethics and complex systems approach. It covers a broad international terrain, it documents geographically wide ranging case studies. It is thus applied in character and does not remain at the purely conceptual level.

Book Synopsis UV Effects in Aquatic Organisms and Ecosystems by : E Walter Helbling
Download or read book UV Effects in Aquatic Organisms and Ecosystems written by E Walter Helbling and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2007-10-31 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers extensive coverage of the most important aspects of UVR effects on all aquatic (not just freshwater and marine) ecosystems, encompassing UV physics, chemistry, biology and ecology. Comprehensive and up-to-date, UV Effects in Aquatic Organisms and Ecosystems aims to bridge the gap between environmental studies of UVR effects and the broader, traditional fields of ecology, oceanography and limnology. Adopting a synthetic approach, the different sections cover: the physical factors controlling UVR intensity in the atmosphere; the penetration and distribution of solar radiation in natural waters; the main photochemical process affecting natural and anthropogenic substances; and direct and indirect effects on organisms (from viruses, bacteria and algae to invertebrate and vertebrate consumers). Researchers and professionals in environmental chemistry, photochemistry, photobiology and cell and molecular biology will value this book, as will those looking at ozone depletion and global change.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Though overall cancer incidence and mortality have continued to decline in recent years, cancer continues to devastate the lives of far too many Americans. In 2009 alone, 1.5 million American men, women, and children were diagnosed with cancer, and 562,000 died from the disease. There is a growing body of evidence linking environmental exposures to cancer. The Pres. Cancer Panel dedicated its 2008¿2009 activities to examining the impact of environmental factors on cancer risk. The Panel considered industrial, occupational, and agricultural exposures as well as exposures related to medical practice, military activities, modern lifestyles, and natural sources. This report presents the Panel¿s recommend. to mitigate or eliminate these barriers. Illus.
