Book Synopsis Short-run Interfuel Substitution in West European Power Generation by : Patrik Söderholm
Download or read book Short-run Interfuel Substitution in West European Power Generation written by Patrik Söderholm and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper analyzes short-run interfuel substitution between fossil fuels in West European power generation. The problem is studied within a restricted translog cost model, which is estimated by pooling time-series data across eight countries in West Europe. The empirical results indicate that interfuel substitution in existing power plants is substantial, especially that between oil and gas. This is consistent with the notion that short-run fuel substitution primarily occurs in multi-fuel fired plants, by switching load between different single-fuel fired plants, or by some conversions of electric plants to be able to burn alternate fuels as well.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Interfuel substitution is an issue that is — and will likely remain — an important topic of inquiry for many years, as governments around the world seek to set policies that are intended to restrain carbon emissions or steer economies toward or away from certain fuels. This book contributes to this issue by estimating short- and long-term interfuel substitution elasticities, at the aggregate and sector levels, through the use of the latest advances in microeconometrics as well as recent international data for a number of OECD and non-OECD countries.
Book Synopsis Interfuel Substitution in Australia by : Md Shahiduzzaman

Book excerpt: This paper examines the possibilities for interfuel substitution in Australia in view of the need to shift towards a cleaner mix of fuels and technologies to meet future energy demand and environmental goals. The translog cost function is estimated for the aggregate economy, the manufacturing sector and its subsectors, and the electricity generation subsector. The advantages of this work over previous literature relating to the Australian case are that it uses relatively recent data, focuses on energy-intensive subsectors and estimates the Morishima elasticities of substitution. The empirical evidence shown herein indicates weak-form substitutability between different energy types, and higher possibilities for substitution at lower levels of aggregation, compared with the aggregate economy. For the electricity generation subsector, which is at the centre of the CO emissions problem in Australia, significant but weak substitutability exists between coal and gas when the price of coal changes. A higher substitution possibility exists between coal and oil in this subsector. The evidence for the own- and cross-price elasticities, together with the results for fuel efficiencies, indicates that a large increase in relative prices could be justified to further stimulate the market for low-emission technologies.

Book Synopsis The Physics of Stocks and Flows of Energy Systems by : Hassan Qudrat-Ullah
Download or read book The Physics of Stocks and Flows of Energy Systems written by Hassan Qudrat-Ullah and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-12-01 with total page 88 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Using a system dynamics approach, this book illustrates the physics of fundamental accumulation processes (stocks and flows) across the demand and supply sectors of energy systems. Examples of system dynamics simulation models are presented where these accumulation processes are driving the behavior of the system. Based on these modeling efforts, two cases (the socio-economic and environmental implications of the energy policy of Pakistan and the dynamics of green power in Ontario, Canada) are analyzed and discussed. By studying the dynamics of the fundamental structures of an energy system, the reader gains an enhanced understanding of the stocks and flows of complex systems as well as their role in energy policy. This book is of use to managers and practitioners, teachers, researchers, and students of design and assessment of policy making for complex, dynamic energy systems.

Book Synopsis Energy Policy by : Anthony David Owens
Download or read book Energy Policy written by Anthony David Owens and published by EOLSS Publications. This book was released on 2009-11-25 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Energy Policy is a component of the Encyclopedia of Energy Sciences, Engineering and Technology Resources which is part of the global Encyclopedia of Life Support Systems (EOLSS), an integrated compendium of twenty one Encyclopedias. Energy policy addresses the economic, environmental, political, planning, and social aspects of energy supply and utilization that confront decision makers, corporate planners, managers, consultants, politicians, and researchers. Energy is of considerable importance given its strategic relevance as a raw material for industry, particularly energy intensive industries, for the quality of life, and for the creation of jobs. The level of energy prices is a critical factor in production costs and prices, and consequently has an important impact on government policy relating to sustainable economic growth, job creation, and prosperity. The book provides a background on the theory and application of policy as it relates to the energy sector, particularly with respect to market failures and potential policy remedies to the energy/ environment dilemma. This volume is aimed at the following five major target audiences: University and College Students, Educators, Professional Practitioners, Research Personnel and Policy Analysts, Managers, and Decision Makers and NGOs.

Book Synopsis Analyzing Demand Behavior by : Douglas R. Bohi
Download or read book Analyzing Demand Behavior written by Douglas R. Bohi and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-11-26 with total page 159 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First Published in 2011. This title takes econometric studies as data; it examines their assumptions, investigates their methodologies, contrasts the data sets they use, and compares their results. By informing users what they can and cannot expect from researchers, it can sharpen the criteria that are used to commission such studies and judge their results. By examining an array of studies dealing with the same or related phenomena, Bohi can analyse the ways in which decisions made by researchers affect their results. All while considering inferences surrounding the role of econometric demand estimation in formulating policy and understanding demand behavior.
