This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 846 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Onondaga Lake in Syracuse, New York is a model for the analysis and management of a polluted urban lake. Sometimes referred to as "the most polluted lake in the United States", Onondaga Lake is one of only two lakes for which a federal advisory body has been set up to guide environmental remediation. The recipient of significant municipal effluent and industrial waste for more than a century, Onondaga Lake has been the focus of intensive limnological investigation and extensive remediation efforts. This book is a comprehensive presentation of the scientific knowledge about Onondaga Lake, based on research coordinated by the Upstate Freshwater Institute. Onondaga Lake: Limnology and Environmental Management of a Polluted Urban Lake is the most complete case study of a lake, and will be of interest to water quality scientists, engineers and managers, as well as environmental engineers, modelers, and policymakers.

Book excerpt: "Urban lakes are part of many of the cities we live in. They are often intricately bound with the city's social fabric, valued for direct utility purposes such as drinking water provision, or for their aesthetic, historical, cultural, and religious significance. However, oftentimes in spite of their unique spatial, socio-cultural, and economic value and 'relationship' with the city, urban lakes end up as receptacles for waste, or are infilled for development. This book traces the socio-cultural and technological dimensions at play for the protection and remediation of a tropical urban lake, and how these dimensions guide the design of need-based solutions. It explores design requirements based on the need for sensitivity to religious and cultural norms, social values and aesthetic requirements. First-hand experiences of the writers in planning and executing an urban lake remediation project in a fast-growing city and a UNESCO heritage site, are drawn as practical examples. The lessons learnt can find application in other lakes of cultural significance in tropical regions."--Publisher's website.

Book Synopsis Environmental Implications of a City-Lake Interface by : Patrick Hayombe
Download or read book Environmental Implications of a City-Lake Interface written by Patrick Hayombe and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2011-09 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The research results showed the existing planning and management framework does not underpin sustainable city-lake interface development. These components were low urban environmental quality, increased environmental management coping strategies, and low performance of the municipal planning institution. Subsequent deterioration of environmental infrastructure was observed as failure of planning institution. Low urban environmental quality was reported as coping management strategies were adopted in absence of effective municipal institutional performance. Strengthening environmental governance was recognized as a mechanism in planning and management where relevant stakeholders should play a role in sustainable city-lake interface development. A Planning and Management Institutional Framework Model was therefore proposed as the integrating factor for sustainable city-lake interface development and should facilitate other complementary strategies of Integrated Urban Conservation and Integrated Neighbourhood Environmental Quality for sustainable livelihood.
Book Synopsis Reviving Lakes and Wetlands in the People's Republic of China, Volume 2 by : Asian Development Bank
Download or read book Reviving Lakes and Wetlands in the People's Republic of China, Volume 2 written by Asian Development Bank and published by Asian Development Bank. This book was released on 2015-10-01 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This publication continues the Asian Development Bank's analysis of lake and wetland rehabilitation in the People's Republic of China. It examines how the current situation in the Chao Lake Basin compares with international thinking on the conditions necessary for sustainable management of lake basins. The analysis highlights that the creation of the Chao Lake Management Authority (CLMA) and the formulation of the master plan do not mean the problem has been solved, only that the basic framework for solving the problem has been created. Building CLMA capacity, focusing more on managing agricultural pollution, introducing incentives to change farmer behavior, and updating the master plan to ensure its relevance are four key actions for the government to undertake in the coming years, if not decades.

Book excerpt: Lakes provide a variety of ecosystem services and benefits that greatly contribute to urban sustainability. Despite the growing interest in integrating freshwater systems into management and policy decisions, urban lakes are often overlooked in land-use planning. The overall goal of this dissertation was to better characterize urban lakes and to provide a basis to improve the management of these systems. As a first step I defined as "urban" those lakes that were completely within areas with at least 50,000 people, and in a sub-watershed with a population density of at least 1,000 people per square mile and more than 10% of impervious cover. Based on this definition, by analyzing datasets from a variety of sources, I identified and characterized 1,950 "urban" lakes and reservoirs across the continental United States. These systems presented more eutrophic and disturbed conditions than non-urban lakes. Urban lakes are also impaired by contaminants (i.e., mercury and toxic compounds) that could harm recreational users. With the exception of a few systems, most urban lakes are not actively managed, which results in degradation of these valuable resources. In the second chapter I examined a case-study of an urban lake that has been intensively managed and monitored for the past 20 years. Intensive in-lake management efforts successfully improved the water quality and maintained the aesthetic and recreational benefits provided by the lake. However, high nutrient loading from the surrounded watershed partially reduced the effectiveness of management efforts. An accurate phosphorus budget for the lake is necessary to effectively implement nutrient reduction strategies. This study also showed some of the challenges faced by lake managers like the coordination of multiple stakeholders and jurisdictions with conflicting goals, guarantee of consistent high-quality data in long-term monitoring programs, and ensuring that the water quality meets user's expectations. In the third chapter, I used a new approach to analyze the impact that future urbanization could have on the water quality and ecosystem services provided by a major urban lake. I combined two modeling tools (InVEST software and a mass balance model) to estimate the amount of phosphorus runoff resulting from alternative land use management scenarios and the consequent lake water quality responses. My results highlighted the negative impacts that land use management decisions developed at the regional scale could have on the water quality of a major urban lake and the importance of incorporating small ecosystems (like lakes) into a large-scale ecosystem service trade-off analysis. Finally, since lakes could be used to ease some of the negative consequences of urban development and climate change, I also quantified the ecological and economic value of the temperature mitigating capacity of urban lakes. Using a new modeling tool (InVEST urban cooling model), I valued the heat mitigation service provided by lakes in alleviating the urban heat island effect in a hot and dry climate. My results showed that the presence of a lake significantly mitigates air temperature and reduces electricity consumption in areas immediately adjacent to the lake under current and future climate change scenarios. The quantification of this important regulatory ecosystem service could help inform decisions on sustainable urban planning. This dissertation contributes in several ways to the existing knowledge of the social-economic value of urban lakes and have a number of implications to improve management of these important systems.
