Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Indigenous Invisibility in the City contextualises the significant social change in Indigenous life circumstances and resurgence that came out of social movements in cities. It is about Indigenous resurgence and community development by First Nations people for First Nations people in cities. Seventy-five years ago, First Nations peoples began a significant post-war period of relocation to cities in the United States, Canada, Australia, and Aotearoa New Zealand. First Nations peoples engaged in projects of resurgence and community development in the cities of the four settler states. First Nations peoples, who were motivated by aspirations for autonomy and empowerment, went on to create the foundations of Indigenous social infrastructure. This book explains the ways First Nations people in cities created and took control of their own futures. A fact largely wilfully ignored in policy contexts. Today, differences exist over the way governments and First Nations peoples see the role and responsibilities of Indigenous institutions in cities. What remains hidden in plain sight is their societal function as a social and political apparatus through which much of the social processes of Indigenous resurgence and community development in cities occurred. The struggle for self-determination in settler cities plays out through First Nations people’s efforts to sustain their own institutions and resurgence, but also rights and recognition in cities. This book will be of interest to Indigenous studies scholars, urban sociologists, urban political scientists, urban studies scholars, and development studies scholars interested in urban issues and community building and development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Internationally, Australia has the most developed heritage jurisprudence because of the use of the World Heritage Convention in Federal and State disputes, and at the State and Territory level, the laws have achieved a rare consistency across the jurisdictions. Until now, however, there has been no comprehensive treatment of this subject. Heritage Law in Australia fills this gap. It is a clear and concise text that will be of use to anyone wanting a general overview of the development of heritage law in Australia. The text offers a systematic analysis of the range of natural and cultural heritage law by discussing heritage law not only by reference to a limited sets of Acts of the Australian Parliaments, the Heritage Acts, but as illustrating what is happening more generally in environmental law and regulation.

Book excerpt: DREAMTIME SUPERHIGHWAY presents a thorough and original contextualization of the rock art and archaeology of the Sydney Basin. By combining excavation results with rock art analysis it demonstrates that a true archaeology of rock art can provide insights into rock art image-making in people's social and cultural lives. Based on a PhD dissertation, this monograph is a significantly revised and updated study which draws forcefully on rich and new data from extensive recent research - much of it by McDonald herself. McDonald has developed a model that suggests that visual culture - such as rock artmaking and its images and forms - could be understood as a system of communication, as a way of signaling group identifying behaviour. For the archaeologist of art, the anthropologist of art and those of us who try to think about past worlds... this monograph is a must read.

Book excerpt: Mysterious, dramatic, enlightening _ Aboriginal rock paintings of Australia are extraordinary glimpses into a culture older than Europeancivilisations, yet still immensely vibrant today. Australia s world-famous Aboriginal rock art can be found all over the country, from Tasmania to the Kimberley. The paintings depict everyday events such as hunting and corroborees, as well as the places and stories of legendary creator ancestors. Fish, wombats, kangaroos and snakes weave their way across the rock, as do the often haunting Dreamtime figures of lightning spirits, serpents and skybeings. Elaine Godden s text helps to explain the paintings and their stories, while Jutta Malnic s photographs perfectly capture the mystery and beauty of the images. Rock Paintings of Aboriginal Australia is a wonderful collection of some of the most fascinating and important art to be found in Australia.

Book excerpt: This book has been initiated by the workshop on Cultural heritage in changing landscapes, held during the IALE (International Association for Landscape Ecology) European Conference that started in Stockholm, Sweden, in June 200 1 and continued across the Baltic to Tartu, Estonia, in JUly. The papers presented at the workshop have been supported by invited contributions that address a wider range of the cultural heritage management issues and research interfaces required to study cultural landscapes. The book focuses on landscape interfaces. Both the ones we find out there in the landscape and the ones we face while doing research. We hope that this book helps if not to make use of these interfaces, then at least to map them and bridge some of the gaps between them. The editors wish to thank those people helping us to assemble this collection. First of all our gratitude goes to the authors who contributed to the book. We would like to thank Marc Antrop, Mats Widgren, Roland Gustavsson, Marion Pots chin, Barbel Tress, Tiina Peil, Helen Soovali and Anu Printsmann for their quick and helpful advice, opinions and comments during the different stages of editing. Helen Soovali and Anu Printsmann together with Piret Pungas - thank you for technical help.

Book excerpt: Revealing the diversity of Aboriginal life in the Sydney region, this study examines a variety of source documents that discuss not only Aboriginal life before colonization in 1788 but also the early years of first contact. This is the only work to explore the minutiae of Sydney Aboriginal daily life, detailing the food they ate; the tools, weapons, and equipment they used; and the beliefs, ceremonial life, and rituals they practiced. This updated edition has been revised to include recent discoveries and the analyses of the past seven years, adding yet more value to this 2004 winner of the John Mulvaney award for best archaeology book from the Australian Archaeological Association. The inclusion of a special supplement that details the important sites in the Sydney region and how to access them makes the book especially appealing to those interested in visiting the sites.
