This book was released on 2008-10-19 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a tutorial designed to instruct the reader in use and application of immunochemical methods of analysis for environmental contaminants. A brief introduction describes basic principles and the advantages and disadvantages of the technology, and gives a listing of references which supply more detail. Preparation of the laboratory for use of this technology and the general scientific considerations prior to using the technology are discussed. Detailed step-wise procedures are given for analysis of selected analytes, triazine herbicides, carbaryl, paraquat, and p-nitrophenols, etc. In addition to the specific immunoassay methods, a series of support techniques necessary to perform immunochemical methods are described. This book provides specific instruction for certain analytes, but also serves to familiarize the novice reader with many generic concepts needed to successfully utilize immunochemistry technology including: applications, sampling, sample preparation, extraction, cleanup, quality assurance, methods development and optimization, data handling and troubleshooting. It is not necessary for the reader to actually perform the immunoassays given in this user's guide to obtain familiarity with these concepts. The guide is written so that the information presented can be applied to other immunoassays not given here. Thus, the strength of the guide is its universal applicability to immunoassay methods.

Book excerpt: The object of "Residue Reviews" is to provide concise, critical reviews of timely advances, philosophy, and significant areas of accomplished or needed endeavor in the total field of residues of pesticide and certain other chemicals in foods, feeds, and in transformed food products. During the 144th National Meetings of the American Chemical Society in Los Angeles, California the Pesticides Subdivision of the A. C. S. Division of Agricultural and Food Chemistry on April 1, 1963 sponsored a symposium "Instrumen tation for the Detection and Determination of Pesticides and Their Residues in Foods". With special permission from R. N. HADER and his associates in the American Chemical Society, that symposium is reproduced in this volume of "Residue Reviews" because of its timeliness and significance to pesticide residue analysts everywhere. Without exception the symposium authors accepted my invitation to utilize "Residue Reviews" as their publication medium, and their coopera tion in the extra chore of providing manuscripts conforming to the style requirements of "Residue Reviews" is gratefully acknowledged. Presiding over the two sessions of the symposium were CHARLES L. DUNN and MILTON S. SCHECHTER, whose introductory remarks at that time comprise the foreword to this volume; their enthusiastic assistance both in organizing the symposium and in achieving this final product is warmly appreciated. Book excerpt: An important branch of environmental research is dealing with the distribution of pesticides and their metabolites. The development of methods, especially of the rather expensive physico-chemical procedures, has experienced considerable progress. However, to lower instrumental costs and personnel being involved, remedial measures are used and required. The highly selective and sensitive immunochemical methods are such an important supplement. They can be used to cope with quantitative (enzyme immunoessays) or qualitative problems (immunolocalization of adsorbed residues in soil and plant). The book introduces validated assays for pesticides and their metabolites that can be applied routinely. An extension to immunofluorescent methods further improves the sensitivity. The significance of the test development has been directly proven by screening programs including the use of model ecosystems.

Book excerpt: A comprehensive collection of robust methods for the detection of pesticide compounds or their metabolites useful in food, environmental, and biological monitoring, and in studies of exposure via food, water, air, and the skin or lungs. The readily reproducible methods range from gas and liquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry detection and other classic detectors, to capillary electrophoresis and immunochemical or radioimmunoassay methods. The authors have focused on extraction and cleanup procedures, in order to develop and optimize more fullyautomated and miniaturized methods, including solid-phase extraction, solid-phase microextraction, microwave-assisted extraction, and on-line tandem liquid chromatography (LC/LC) trace enrichment, among others. The protocols offer step-by-step laboratory instructions, an introduction outlining the principles behind the technique, lists of the necessary equipment and reagents, and tips on troubleshooting and avoiding known pitfalls.

Book excerpt: This broad overview covers the four traditional spheres of the environment: water, air, earth, and life, and introduces a fifth sphere - the "anthrosphere" - which the author defines as the sphere of human activities, especially technology, that affect the earth. Environmental Science and Technology is organized into six major areas; one for each of the five spheres and one introductory section that explains the fundamentals of chemistry, biology, biochemistry, and environmental chemistry. Throughout the book, the relationships among the five spheres and their connections to the sciences are emphasized. For better or worse, technology is closely intertwined with the other four spheres. Humans utilize resources, manufacture goods, practice agriculture, and engage in other activities that have profound effects on the planet. This unique text/reference takes a realistic look at the environmental effects of human activities, and shows how constructively directed technology can have a beneficial effect on the Earth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even a cursory perusal of any analytical journal will demonstrate the increasing important of trace and ultra-trace analysis. And as instrumentation continues to develop, the definition of the term "trace element" will undoubtedly continue to change. Covering the composition and underlying properties of freshwater and marine systems, Analytical Measurements in Aquatic Environments provides the basis for understanding both. It discusses all aspects of analytical protocols from the handling of representative samples to the metrological evaluation of specific steps and whole procedures. The book covers: handling of representative samples sample preservation techniques extraction techniques speciation analytics solvent-free sample preparation for analysis application of biotests bioanalytical methods for monitoring green analytical chemistry-application of the concept of sustainability in analytical laboratories application of the Life Cycle Assessment approach quality control and quality assurance of analytical results enhanced techniques of sample preparation hyphenated analytical techniques Ecotoxicological considerations and the effort to achieve an increasingly accurate description of the state of the environment challenge analytical chemists who need to determine increasingly lower concentrations of various analytes in samples that have complex and even non-homogenous matrices. The newly coined expression "analytics" emphasizes the interdisciplinary nature of available methods for obtaining information about material systems, with many methods that exceed the strict definition of analytical chemistry. Drawing on the disciplines of chemistry, physics, computer science, electronics, material science, and chemometrics, this book provides in depth information on the most important problems in analytics of samples from aquatic ecosystems.

Book excerpt: This book is a summary of the presentations and discussions at the Workshop on Methods of Pesticide Exposure Assessment held in Ottawa, Canada, on October 5-8, 1993. The event was a joint effort of Health Canada and the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation and was officially supported by the United States Environmental Agency and the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development (OECD). The goal of the workshop was to examine current issues in the field of pesticide exposure assessment with the aim of reaching an internationally harmonized approach to methods of exposure assessment. With regulatory agencies of OECD Member countries moving towards the harmonization of data requirements, it was timely and beneficial to bring together international experts in the field of pesticide exposure assessment to discuss current issues. Approximately 60 delegates and 20 observers participated, including individuals from 15 different countries representing academia, government, industry and international organizations. A guidance document on methods of pesticide exposure assessment was presented as a means to achieving the goal of international for critique and discussion harmonization. After extensive discussion, the workshop delegates agreed in principle to procedures for revising the guidance document. Following revision and further review by a designated peer review group, the revised document will be submitted to the OECD for consideration as a draft OECD Guidance Document on pesticide exposure assessment methods. Both the revised and original documents are included in these proceedings.
