The PEHSUs have each developed and cultivated their own specialties, styles, collaborations, partnerships and special outreach programs such as the Southeast PEHSUs Break the Cycle program. 'Break the Cycle' is an annual mentor/mentee that has been around since 2005. It brings the efforts among students of all disciplines focused on increasing the understanding disparities in environmental conditions and resulting health outcomes. 'Break the Cycle' has grown in influence and geography, with an increasing number of student researchers participating each year. This compilation presents important prenatal exposure research accomplished through this PEHSU mentorship program.

The target populations are communities where environmental hazards are related to circumstances of social and economic disadvantage. Each student develops a project that focuses on preventing or reducing adverse environmental factors to benefit the children who live in these communities. At the end of the project, the students present their studies and findings at a national conference and write papers which are then published. The papers in this publication represent the work of students who participated in the 14th Annual Break the Cycle program. The phrase "Break the Cycle" in this context uses the ecological construct of the cycle of environmental health disparities and represents a framework for reducing health disparities and promoting health equity among children who are vulnerable as a consequence of adverse social, economic, environmental and political factors. The student projects are intended to break the cycle and liberate children from the intergenerational cycle of health disparities, so they can grow and develop to their full potential. Through this academic process, the students gain knowledge, insight and skills to enable them to advance in their careers and become future leaders.

Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Only part of an individual's health status depends on his or her behavior and choice; community-wide problems like poverty, unemployment, poor education, inadequate housing, poor public transportation, interpersonal violence, and decaying neighborhoods also contribute to health inequities, as well as the historic and ongoing interplay of structures, policies, and norms that shape lives. When these factors are not optimal in a community, it does not mean they are intractable: such inequities can be mitigated by social policies that can shape health in powerful ways. Communities in Action: Pathways to Health Equity seeks to delineate the causes of and the solutions to health inequities in the United States. This report focuses on what communities can do to promote health equity, what actions are needed by the many and varied stakeholders that are part of communities or support them, as well as the root causes and structural barriers that need to be overcome.

Participating students are required to develop projects that focus on preventing or reducing adverse environmental factors or their impact on children's health and promote positive practices to improve the future outcome for children who live in these communities. Student projects cover a wide range of adverse factors and their associated health implications across the lifespan, and propose solutions at an individual, family, community, and societal level, with the potential for a positive intergenerational impact. At the end of the project period, participating students are required to present the results of their work at a national conference and then write a manuscript for publication. The papers in this publication represent the work of students who participated in the 15th Annual Break the Cycle program 2019-2020. The phrase Break the Cycle in this context uses the ecological construct of the cycle of environmental health disparities and offers a framework for tackling health disparities and promoting health equity among children who are vulnerable as a consequence of adverse social, economic, environmental and political factors.

Chapter Two is a broad overview of the prevalence of COVID-19 in the Texas juvenile justice system. Chapter Three examines the six month outcomes of malnourished children who are enrolled in the Nutritional Therapeutic program in a peri-urban, low-income settlement in the Western Cape, South Africa. Chapter Four asks the question, "Does early life phthalate exposure mediate racial disparities in children's cognitive abilities?" Chapter Five assesses the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors of families with a low socioeconomic status in regards to phthalate exposure in children. Chapter Six examines a comparison of the Neighborhood Deprivation Index and food desert status as environmental predictors of early childhood obesity. Chapter Seven takes a look at the implications for children's mental health in Durham, North Carolina, on account of equitable access to greenspace during the COVID-19 pandemic. Chapter Eight reviews neighborhood quality and positive health indicators among urban adolescents. Chapter Nine looks to the development of evidence-based intervention for teens that have lost a parent through human-centered design, seeking to create a grief group for today's teens.
