Book Synopsis Environmental Effects Studies on Selected Titanium Alloys by : J. M. Van Orden

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The elevated temperature stress-corrosion cracking behavior of several titanium alloys was investigated. The results indicate varying degrees of susceptibility, depending on alloy, test conditions, heat treatment, and so on. The need for additional work and refinement and standardization of test conditions is evident from the variations in test results reported here and by other researchers. Materials tested included sheet alloys Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V, Ti-6Al-4V, Ti-5Al-2.5Sn, Ti-13V-11Cr-3Al, Ti-4Al-3Mo-1V, and extrusion alloys Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V, Ti-6Al-6V-2Sn, Ti-6Al-4V, and Ti-7Al-4Mo. Test exposure temperatures from 500 to 650 F were used. Other test variables were salt type and thickness, heat treatment strength level, stress level, fabrication effects (spotwelding, fusion welding, bend forming, and so on) and exposure time. It has not been established whether laboratory stress-corrosion behavior in titanium alloys can be a problem in actual service; however, the approach at Lockheed will be to select and control materials for use in SST construction which are shown to be unaffected in laboratory elevated temperature stress-corrosion testing.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 431 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This series was organized to provide a forum for review papers in the area of corrosion. The aim of these reviews is to bring certain areas of corrosion science and technology into a sharp focus. The volumes of this series are published approximately on a yearly basis and each contains three to five reviews. The articles in each volume are sekcted in such a way as to be of interest both to the corrosion scientists and the corrosion technologists. There is, in fact, a particular aim in juxtaposing these interests because of the importance of mutual interaction and interdisciplinarity so important in corrosion studies. It is hoped that the corrosion scientists in this way may stay abreast of the activities in corrosion technology and vice versa. In this series the term "corrosion" is used in its very broadest sense. It includes, therefore, not only the degradation of metals in aqueous en vironment but also what is commonly referred to as "high-temperature oxidation. " Further, the plan is to be even more general than these topics; the series will include all solids and all environments. Today, engineering solids include not only metals but glasses, ionic solids, polymeric solids, and composites of these. Environments of interest must be extended to liquid metals, a wide variety of gases, nonaqueous electrolytes, and other non aqueous liquids.
Download or read book Titanium Alloys written by Maciej Motyka and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2019-11-27 with total page 156 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Titanium alloys, due to unique physical and chemical properties (mainly high relative strength combined with very good corrosion resistance), are considered as an important structural metallic material used in hi-tech industries (e.g. aerospace, space technology). This book provides information on new manufacturing and processing methods of single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The eight chapters of this book are distributed over four sections. The first section (Introduction) indicates the main factors determining application areas of titanium and its alloys. The second section (Manufacturing, two chapters) concerns modern production methods for titanium and its alloys. The third section (Thermomechanical and surface treatment, three chapters) covers problems of thermomechanical processing and surface treatment used for single- and two-phase titanium alloys. The fourth section (Machining, two chapters) describes the recent results of high speed machining of Ti-6Al-4V alloy and the possibility of application of sustainable machining for titanium alloys.

Book Synopsis Relative Susceptibility of Titanium Alloys to Hot-salt Stress-corrosion by : Hugh R. Gray
Download or read book Relative Susceptibility of Titanium Alloys to Hot-salt Stress-corrosion written by Hugh R. Gray and published by . This book was released on 1971 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Susceptibility of titanium alloys to hot-salt stress-corrosion cracking increased as follows: Ti-2Al-11Sn-5Zr-0.2Si(679), Ti-6Al-2Sn-4Zr-2Mo(6242), Ti-6Al-4V(64), Ti-6Al-4V-3Co(643), Ti-8Al-1Mo-1V(811), and Ti-13V-11Cr-3A1(13-11-3). The Ti-5Al-6Sn-2Zr-1Mo-0.25Si(5621S) alloy was both the least and most susceptible depending on heat treatment. Such rankings can be drastically altered by heat-to-heat and processing variations. Residual compressive stresses and cyclic exposures also reduce susceptibility to stress-corrosion. Simulated turbine-engine compressor environmental variables such as air velocity, pressure, dewpoint, salt concentration, and salt deposition temperature have only minor effects. Detection of substantial concentrations of hydrogen in all corroded alloys confirmed the existence of a hydrogen embrittlement mechanism.--P. [i].
