Book excerpt: The Falling Weight Deflectometer data for load transfer efficiency at joints in Jointed Concrete Pavement (JCP) must be properly analyzed and interpreted in order to prevent misleading results. Some parameters affecting pavement deflection are the pavement layer moduli, Poisson's ratios, thicknesses, and layer interaction. All of these must be considered to accurately "backcalculate" moduli from deflections. Joints add even more variables which affect the deflection measurement such as loss of support due to pumping at or near the joint. It is this parameter which will be discussed in this paper. First, a methodology for determining load transfer efficiency at a joint with subbase support will be given. Second the effects of loss of subbase support will be discussed and a methodology, with qualifications, given to determine load transfer at a joint that has loss of subbase support.

Book excerpt: This study was instituted primarily to develop techniques for assessing the load transfer efficiency of joints and cracks in rigid pavements using the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) and to determine the factors influencing load transfer efficiency across such discontinuities. This report describes the evaluation of procedures for assessing the load transfer efficiency of transverse joints and cracks using FWD deflection data collected on a controlled jointed reinforced concrete pavement research facility in a laboratory study. The application of the procedures--on a number of jointed reinforced concrete pavement (JRCP) and continuously reinforced concrete pavement (CRCP) test sections on in-service rigid pavements, in order to determine their suitability for implementation in the field--is also discussed.

Book excerpt: Results from a field forensic investigation conducted using a falling weight deflectometer (FWD) and visual observations on a jointed concrete pavement that showed premature distresses are presented in this article. At the time of testing, the pavement was six years old and was supported on a crushed limestone granular base underlain by cohesive natural or fill subgrade. The primary objective of the field investigation was to assess whether the foundation support conditions contributed to the distresses observed. FWD tests were conducted on 140 panels over an 830-m-long section of which 25 panels showed distress. The FWD deflection basin data was used to calculate several index parameters, which showed statistically significant differences between the cracked and the uncracked slabs, which suggests that the foundation layer properties were comparatively weaker under the cracked slabs. Visual observations showed that some of the distresses were related to potential lateral movement of the slopes next to the pavement.

Book excerpt: This paper discusses the principles of two closed-form algorithms, ILLI-BACK and NUS-BACK, for backcalculating layer moduli of concrete pavements and their implications for selecting sensor locations in falling-weight deflectometer tests. It is found that sensor location has an effect on the results backcalculated using these two closed-form algorithms. Use of sensors at large radial distances may produce results with high variations since a small variation in the deflections recorded by these sensors will result in a significant change of layer modulus. Use of close sensor spacing will produce a ratio of deflections recorded by two consecutive sensors close to 1, leading to significant variations in backcalculation results in those cases where errors are involved in deflection measurements. The Strategic Highway Research Program (SHRP) FWD sensor configuration with sensors located at 0, 203, 305, 457, 610, 914, and 1524 mm is examined. Care should be taken in backcalculation analysis of concrete pavements using the SHRP sensor configuration in conjunction with the closed-form algorithms. Backcalculation results from deflections measured by SHRP and on Indiana US52 quantitatively confirm these findings.

Book excerpt: Geofoam, an XPS polystyrene with a unit weight of 1 to 3 lb/ft. 3, was used as embankment fill for Minnesota Trunk Highway (TH) 100 segment 3 (SP 2735-159) in 2000. It was also used at Technology Drive in 2002 to correct a slope failure that had occurred in a large embankment near a ramp. The TH 100 segment consisted of a 10 in. dowelled jointed plain concrete pavement (JPCP) and the Technology Drive section was a 7 in. bituminous pavement. Concerns about the vibration issues during and immediately after paving led to a retrofit of the sites with multi-depth deflectometers (MDD) and a two-year study of pavement response. The authors seasonally investigated flexible and rigid pavement response to Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) loads, loaded and calibrated snow and ice trucks through the MDDs, and a seismograph. This study compared seasonal deflection basins, elastic moduli, and dominant frequencies of flexible and rigid pavements built with Geofoam fill to their corresponding contiguous control sections built without Geofoam fill. The 3-ft. of granular fill above the 4 in. concrete cap covering the Geofoam compounded the process of layer moduli computations. The report concludes with interesting findings, particularly that the response of Geofoam pavements may exhibit higher deflections and vibration amplitudes and they are in a time series. However, these are not resonant vibrations that would require design changes from the current practice.

Book excerpt: Structural evaluation can be very useful at the network level for project prioritization purposes. In the project priority ranking procedure of the Kansas Department of Transportation (KDOT), a pavement rating attribute, Pavement Structural Evaluation (PSE), is used. These ratings are subjective. his study outlines an approach based on the classical multiple regression analysis resulting in a better estimation of the PSE values using the results from the Falling Weight Deflectometer (FWD) tests and network-level distress survey. The regression models proposed in this study predict the decrease in PSE values by taking into account the FWD data, age, thickness, and distress levels of pavements, and very closely approximate the current PSE ratings obtained at the district level.
