Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Thanks to their low density and tailored properties, polymer matrix composites are attractive candidates for a large number of industrial applications ranging from aerospace to transportation and energy. However, the behaviour of polymer-based materials is strongly affected by a number of environmental factors. Environmental Degradation in Industrial Composites provides vital information on the effects of environmental factors such as temperature, liquid and gas exposure, electrical fields and radiations, and how micro- and micromechanical calculations during design and manufacture must take these effects into account. The book concludes with reviews on standard and specific testing methods for the various environmental factors and their combinations, helping mechanical/materials engineers and specifiers to predict possible changes due to environmental conditions. Each chapter is supplemented by industrial case studies to help in the understanding of degradation of composites in real life situations. This book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracyThis book will help you to...* Understand how environmental factors lead to degradation effects in polymer matrix composite structures* Build these factors into calculations when predicting the part performance and lifetime of structures* Compare real-life situations from case studies with your predicted results* Predict probable composite behaviour with greater accuracy

Book excerpt: A variety of environmental factors can influence the performance of advanced polymers and composites. In particular, exposure to a combination of moisture and elevated temperature can significantly alter properties. The extent of chemical and physical changes is a function of exposure time and the temperature and humidity of the environment. This work discusses the effects of chemical and physical aging of AFR700B, a high-temperature addition polyimide resin. Neat resin samples were isothermally aged for 500 and 1000 hours at 250 deg C in dry air, humid air, and dry nitrogen. Changes in the dynamic mechanical properties and weight of the resin samples after these different exposures are discussed. An accelerated aging process was developed to facilitate the study of hydrolytic degradation. The effect of degradation on the Tg, weight, and mechanical behavior is discussed. The use of a silicon-nitride moisture barrier proved ineffective.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer matrix composites are replacing materials such as metals in industries such as aerospace, automotive and civil engineering. As composites are relatively new materials, more information on the potential risk of failure is needed to ensure safe design. This book focuses on three main types of failure: impact damage, delamination and fatigue. Chapters in Parts 1-4 describe the main types of failure mechanism and discuss testing methods for predicting failure in composites. Chapters in Parts 5 and 6 discuss typical kinds of in-service failure and their implications for industry.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced polymer matrix composites (PMC) have many advantages such as light weight and high specific strength that make them useful for many aerospace applications. Enormous uncertainty exists, however, in predicting long-term changes in properties of PMCs under extreme environmental conditions, which has limited their use. To help address this issue, the Department of Defense requested a study from the NRC to identify the barriers and limitations to the use of PMCs in extreme environments. The study was to focus on issues surrounding methodologies for predicting long-term performance. This report provides a review of the challenges facing application of PMCs in extreme environments, the current understanding of PMC properties and behavior, an analysis of the importance of data in developing effective models, and recommendations for improving long-term predictive methodologies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Degradation of polymeric matrix composite materials in marine environments has been experimentally investigated. Carbon/epoxy, carbon/bismaleimeide-epoxy, glass/epoxy and glass/PPS, and neat PPS were examined. The environments considered were distilled water and natural seawater at room temperature and 35°C. Water absorption was monitored during seven months of immersion. Several specimen geometries were investigated which allowed determination of longitudinal and transverse diffusivities. Degradation of mechanical performance due to water absorption was examined through transverse tension testing of dry and wet composites. The transverse modulus of the thermoset composites remained virtually unaffected by water absorption, while the modulus of glass/PPS dropped substantially, apparently due to extensive fiber/matrix debonding induced by water absorption. Transverse tensile strength was drastically reduced after water absorption for all composites. The composites degraded similarly in distilled water and seawater. Inspection of the fracture surfaces of dry and wet composites in a scanning electron microscope indicated that fiber/matrix adhesion was adequate in the dry composites, while in the wet composites numerous bare debonded fibers were observed, which substantiates that the reduction in transverse strength is largely due to fiber/matrix interfacial degradation.

Book excerpt: Aerospace and naval applications of polymers in conditions once thought too harsh for them, take center stage in the survey of how polymer composites react to environmental conditions. A dozen papers from a symposium in San Diego, October 1991, describe damage mechanisms and failure, materials behavior under combined effects, and constitutive models, sometimes considering polymers as a whole, but more often specific groups or composites. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This final report summarizes the research results on space environmental effects including vacuum, temperature, and radiation on the coefficient of thermal expansion (CTE), stiffness, creep, and material damping in graphite/epoxy and Kevlar/epoxy composite laminates, obtained over the period 1 November 1981 to 31 October 1982 under AFOSR-78-3694 funding. This submission is intended to supplement the previous three annual reports and thus should be read in context with those documents. The main accomplishments in this 12 month period have been in the study of UV and electron radiation effects on composites in a thermo-vacuum environment, and the development and experimental validation of viscoelastic and laminate damping models for composites. In hard vacuum, matrix stiffness increases over a wide temperature range, matrix creep compliance and material damping decrease, and CTE changes depending on laminate configuration. Combined UV radiation in hard vacuum along with some Beta-radiation testing produced only minor variation in matrix stiffness, creep compliance, and CTE iwth exposures up to 300 equivalent solar days. Thermal-vacuum cycling resulted in matrix stiffness and tensile strength reduction, and CTE drift. Laminate models used were quite accurate in predicting CTE, damping, creep, and strength of arbitrary laminate configurations based on material property data obtained under different environmental conditions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Polymer matrix composites are finding increasing number of applications due to their high weight-saving potential as well as unique characteristics, such as high strength-to-density ratio, fatigue resistance, high damping factor, and freedom from corrosion. While many textbooks are available on the mechanics of polymer matrix composites, few cover their processing. Processing of Polymer Matrix Composites fills this gap. The book focuses on the major manufacturing processes used for polymer matrix composites and describes process details, process parameters and their effects on properties and process-induced defects, and analytical and experimental methods used for understanding process conditions. The book describes fibers, thermosetting and thermoplastic polymers, and interface characteristics that are important from the standpoint of both design and processing. It also emphasizes the applications of process fundamentals for both continuous fiber and short fiber polymer matrix composites. In addition the book considers quality inspection methods, tooling, and manufacturing costs and environmental and safety issues.
