Book excerpt: This curriculum guideline for environmental education in Scottish schools is for levels 10-14, 14-16, and post-16. The rationale of the program is based on a belief of uneasiness of ordinary people about their environment, the relationship of people with their environment, a need for change, a lack of current progress, the need to teach for the environment, and the development of an environmental ethic. The aim of the curriculum is identified as "education in and through the environment, education about the environment, and education for the environment." The guiding principles are based on: an ecocentric and concentric approach; a holistic view; a coherent, continuous, and progressive lifelong process; direct experience; interdisciplinary character; environmental issues; problem solving; a variety of teaching and learning approaches; being pupil centered; outward looking; generating action; and being exemplary. Course topics are developed for primary, secondary, and post-16 levels. Collaboration between environmental organizations is stressed along with an awareness of available resources. The use of primary environmental sources is advocated. Means of implementation and recommendations are given for the curriculum. Appendices include a flowchart of the "Framework for the Production of a School Environmental Education Policy," and a listing of environmental organizations, with addresses. (ML)

Book excerpt: This resource guide is designed to help educators find curricula, multimedia resources, and other educational materials that can enhance the teaching of environmental education in a variety of settings. Curriculum guides and other educational materials listed in this guide were evaluated by classroom teachers, content experts, and environmental educators. Each set of materials was reviewed by at least three people. Curriculum materials included in this compendium were evaluated using the Environmental Education Materials Guidelines for Excellence developed by the North American Association For Environmental Education (NAAEE). The write-ups were designed to point out the variety of factors an educator may wish to consider when deciding which materials are most appropriate for a particular group of students and how those materials might be used most effectively. The first section of this guide highlights approximately 50 environmental education curriculum materials. Each entry contains a summary of the curriculum information about grade levels, subject areas, author, publishers, and price; comments specific to the six key characteristics of quality environmental education materials according to the Guidelines for Excellence; and a sample of quotations from the reviewers' evaluation sheets. The second section contains an annotated listing of support materials. Appendices include a curriculum matrix, publisher index, and an author/editor index (PVD).

Book Synopsis Towards Critical Environmental Education by : Aristotelis S. Gkiolmas
Download or read book Towards Critical Environmental Education written by Aristotelis S. Gkiolmas and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-11-03 with total page 181 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume discusses theory, philosophy, praxis and methods in Environmental and Ecological education, and considers the junction with the main visions and issues of Critical Pedagogy. The volume and its separate chapters address four axes, which can also be seen as the guidelines of the content as well as the central objectives of the book. The first axis concerns the missing theoretical and practical pieces at this point in time. The volume considers the issues that are not included in contemporary Environmental Education, and thus, deprive it from critical orientations. This implies that in Environmental Education, very little discussion exists about the political, economic, racial, gender and class issues that in most cases govern the actions of leaders and stake-holders. The second axis concerns what has been done so far and in what directions. This involves descriptions of theoretical approaches or actual applied methodologies in the classroom, such as curricula or syllabus used or the kind of actions certain educators have taken to infuse the issues of justice and critical reflection within the Environmental Education teaching agenda. The third axis examines proposals. It looks at ways to enrich domains of Environmental Education with the argumentations of Critical Pedagogy. The fourth axis concerns the way in which proposals can be effectuated. This part contains specific methodologies and teaching sequences, depicting ways of including major aspects of Critical Pedagogy and Critical Education in Environmental Education. Examples are: Non-anthropocentric ecological approaches in the classroom, political activism in the Curricula, mixture of field activities and political activities.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geography, environment, sustainability, culture and education standing alone or in any combination, provide the ingredients for a variety of stews. They are all difficult to define and they generate endless debates for theoreticians and practitioners about their meaning and significance. The editors have divided the chapters that follow into two parts in an effort to unit these diverse disciplines. Part 1 is concerned with cultural foundations and curriculum issues related to geographical and environmental education for sustainability. Part 2 comprises a series of chapters presenting education for sustainability in the contexts of national cultures.

Book Synopsis Leading the Way to Environmental Literacy and Quality by : Edward J. McCrea
Download or read book Leading the Way to Environmental Literacy and Quality written by Edward J. McCrea and published by . This book was released on 2006 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ed McCrea, former executive director of North American Association for Environmental Education (NAEE), calls the development of the environmental education guidelines the single most important event that has occurred in the field of environmental education in the last decade. For the first time in its history, environmental education has a set of tools that promotes unity, a common language, and the professionalization of the field. These guidelines, which are described in this document, grew from NAAEE's desire to ensure that environmental education was a part of the national standards movement. Most of all, the guidelines offer a way to ensure that environmental education materials, programs, and practitioners are of the highest possible quality.
