Book excerpt: This report has been prepared to identify and analyze the environmental impacts potentially associated with the proposed construction and operation of 170 field grade and senior officer single-family detached housing units on a site of approximately 50 acres in San Pedro, California. The proposed housing site comprises a portion of the 145.8-acre area known as White Point. A total of approximately 660 persons would live in the proposed project. The report follows the standard format for an environmental assessment and contains six major sections, as follows: (I) Introduction, (II) Project Descriptions, (III) Alternatives To the Proposed Action, (IV) Relationship to land use Plans, Policies and Programs, (V) Relationship to the California Coastal Act of 1976 and (VI) Environmental Description and Impact Assessment. The need for the project has been established because of the lack of on-base housing at the Los Angeles Air Force Station (LAAFS), the inability of military personnel to find adequate affordable housing in the Los Angeles area, the lack of available sites for housing within a reasonable commuting distance of LAAFS and the general unavailability of housing consistant with Air Force standards in the local area.
