Book excerpt: A reregulation dam is used to reduce drastic fluctuations from main reservoir releases, usually as a consequence of hydropower operations. In a pumped-storage system, it also provides storage for subsequent pumpback to the upstream reservoir. This report describes the expected impact of the addition of a reregulation pool system. A cost-effective method for simulating the hydrodynamics and transport in a reregulation pool is presented. The method has been coupled with a vertical one-dimensional reservoir model to simulate the hydrodynamics and transport of the reservoir-reregulation pool system. The modeling procedure for simulating the hydrodynamics and transport of the reregulaiton pool was selected from three candidate methods. The three methods in progressive order of complexity are: (1) the sump method, (2) the level pool routing method, and (3) the finite difference simulation of the Saint-Venant equations. The methods have been incorporated within the WESTEX model, and the predicted temperature profiles in the main reservoir and the release temperatures from the regulation pool are compared to results from a reservoir study previously conducted at the Waterways Experiment Station.

Application of a Two-Dimensional Model of Hydrodynamics and Water Quality (CE-QUAL-W2) to DeGray Lake, Arkansas written by James L. Martin and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report describes the application of a two-dimensional, laterally averaged, hydrodynamic and water quality model (CE-QUAL-W2) to DeGray Lake, Arkansas. The model successfully predicted spatial and temporal variations in dissolved oxygen concentrations and other water quality variables over the stratification cycle. The application and testing of the model are described. Keywords: Reservoir stratification; Lake hydrodynamics; Computer programs; Water quality.

This book was released on 2018-05-02 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With the growth of urbanization, industrialization, and intensive agricultural practices, all superficial, inland, and marine water bodies have become the repository for large quantities of every type of substance extraneous to the natural aquatic environment. The knowledge of hydrodynamics becomes crucial in this context, as it is the driving mechanism for the movement and transport of these matters and of sediments that become collectors of these substances, in a surface water system. The best way to understand these natural processes is via examples and case studies. This book deals with practical studies of hydrodynamic processes through physical and numerical models. Researchers, together with practicing engineers, will find this book useful in making a rapid assessment of different environmental water body problems.

Book Synopsis Workshop on Riverine Water Quality Modeling by : Linda S. Johnson
Download or read book Workshop on Riverine Water Quality Modeling written by Linda S. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Riverine Water Quality Modeling Workshop was held at the U.S. Army Engineer Waterways Experiment Station (WES) on 9-10 April 1980 to address three objectives: (1) define environmental/water quality problems in large rivers encountered by Corps of Engineers (CE) Offices; (2) determine if state-of-the-art riverine models are able to address these problems; and (3) identify areas of inadequacy in the state-of-the-art models for future study and development in the Environmental and Water Quality Operational Studies (EWQOS) Program. To address these objectives, representatives from CE District and Division Offices, other Federal agencies, and the consulting community were invited to participate in the Workshop. At the Workshop, problems were identified in two main areas: water quality problems and problems associated with water quality models. Major water quality problems dealt with reservoir releases and sedimentation. The modeling-related problems included the entire spectrum from new model development to model application problems (i.e. coefficient selection). Workshop recommendations included collecting data sets for a one-dimensional unsteady flow water quality model and for a two-dimensional vertically averaged model. The development and verification of a mathematical algorithm for the transport of fine suspended sediment were also recommended. (Author).

Book Synopsis Environmental Impact Research Program: Coupling Hydrodynamics to a Multiple-Box Water Quality Model by : Sandra L. Bird
Download or read book Environmental Impact Research Program: Coupling Hydrodynamics to a Multiple-Box Water Quality Model written by Sandra L. Bird and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long-term, multidimensional water quality modeling, using directly linked hydrodynamic and water quality models, can become prohibitively expensive. In this report, fine scale, short time-step hydrodynamic model output is linked with coarse grid, longer time-step multiple-box water quality model. The formulation, limitations, and adaption for use in applications of the Water Quality Analysis Simulation Program (WASP), the US Environmental Protection Agency multiple-box model, are discussed. Linkage of the multiple-box model to two hydrodynamic models is explained. Dye tracer simulations are used to compare mass transport by the box model with mass transport by the directly linked models for three applications: Savannah River Estuary, Mississippi Sound, and DeGray Lake. Keywords: Numerical methods.
