Technologies are rarely, if ever, socially isolated artefacts. Instead, they materially represent an embodiment of values and priorities. Nuclear power is no different. It is a product of a particular political economy and the question is whether that political economy can helpfully engage with the challenge of addressing the environmental crisis on a finite, inequitable and shared planet. For developing countries like India, who are presently making infrastructure investments which will have long legacies, it is imperative that these investments wrestle with such questions and prove themselves capable of sufficiency, greater equality and inclusiveness. This book offers a critique of civilian nuclear power as a green energy strategy for India and develops and proposes an alternative "synergy for sustainability." It situates nuclear power as a socio-technical infrastructure embodying a particular development discourse and practice of energy and economic development. The book reveals the political economy of this arrangement and examines the latter’s ability to respond to the environmental crisis. Manu V. Mathai argues that the existing overwhelmingly growth-focused, highly technology-centric approach for organizing economic activity is unsustainable and needs to be reformed. Within this imperative for change, nuclear power in India is found to be and is characterized as an "authoritarian technology." Based on this political economy critique the book proposes an alternative, a synergy of ideas from the fields of development economics, energy planning and science, technology and society studies.

Book excerpt: This book highlights methodological approaches for the economics of sustainable development and brings together recent empirical work done in India, especially by Dr. Surender Kumar and Dr. Shunsuke Managi. Various chapters in this book use Indian data to show the very wide applicability of methodologies in the theory of production for dealing with many empirical issues of environmentally sustainable development in a developing country. I congratulate the authors for the time and effort devoted to compiling this very useful reference on the subject and the publishers for publishing this volume. The methodologies of cost functions, distance functions, and production fu- tions have been used in many recent studies and in the studies reported in this book for environmental valuation. Environmental valuation is required for designing policy instruments like pollution taxes for sustainable development and for meas- ing green GDP. The UN methodology of integrated environmental and economic accounting provides ways of measuring the cost of maintaining environmental resources at sustainable levels or the maintenance cost for estimating green GDP. Some of the chapters in this book show that the methodology of distance functions could be used for estimating the cost of environmentally sustainable development.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Natural and environmental resources are productive assets in a nation's economy and the basis of a country's economic activity. Economic activity, in turn, affects the quantity and quality of a country's natural and environmental resources. Mining, lumbering, manufacturing, fishing, and a host of other economic activities change the stock of natural resources, which calls for appropriate trade-off between the needs of the present and future generations. However, environmental pollution is one of the major problems faced by the world community, especially in cities of the developing countries which have experienced an unbridled growth of population, urbanization, and industrialization. In India - the second most populous and seventh largest country in the world - environmental problems can be classified into two broad categories: (a) those arising from conditions of poverty and under-development, and (b) those arising as negative effects of the very process of development. This volume of research papers - authored by experts in the field of environmental economics - provides deep insights into the linkages between development and the environment in India. The book suggests remedial measures for environmentally sustainable economic policies in the country. [Subject: India Studies, Economics, Environmental Studies, Development Studies]Ã?Â?Ã?Â?

Book excerpt: The three pillars of sustainable development are economic growth, social development, and protection of environment, and an integration of these pillars is required for national planning and policymaking. The greatest drawback of the existing literature in India is an inadequate understanding of the interplay of these three pillars. While dealing with the concept of sustainable development, the Focus of the international community is on technical and environmental issues and challenges. Offering unique integrated approach, which includes both macro and micro analyses, this volume is an interdisciplinary study of the various challenges that shape debates on sustainable development in India. The contributions cover issues like the role of patents in development, conservation of natural resources, protection of the marine environment, poverty, bioremediation, importance of the ocean life as well as e-waste management and the role of local governments in attaining sustainability-issues which directly affect the progress of an economy. The theoretical and empirical analyses presented in this volume raise varied questions, yet the integrated whole that emerges reveals the future directions, which will shape the policy and theoretical debates an sustainable development. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book examines the nuances of the relationship between development and environmental conservation policy in India over the last three decades. While India is taken as the focal point, the study extends to an analysis of global aspects and other developing countries as and when the situation demands. Understanding that development always has to take environmental issues into consideration, the book undertakes critical reviews of the different ways in which this has been done. The review is based on a grasp of the simultaneous developments in the theoretical understanding of the environment and ecosystems and provides pointers towards directions for possible change. The motivation for the book lies in the continuing distance between theoretical knowledge of the role of the environment, in particular the underlying long-term links between human wellbeing and wise use of nature, and its application in public policy. The book also proposes that whichever theoretical cornerstone is taken as the starting point, it is the ethical undertones that drive the analysis in directions that acquire meaning in terms of the quality and legitimacy of decision-making. It explores the relevance to policy of a variety of radical conceptual development and policy directions, such as dematerialising growth, the social metabolism approach and the degrowth movement. Further, the dilemma facing environmental policy continues to be how to simultaneously borrow from developments in and across disciplines while at the same time, and at a more practical level, dealing with a diversity of stakeholders.

Book excerpt: Grounded in current issues and constraints, this book focuses on valuing environmental degradation, green economic growth, trade–environment linkage, climate change, health outcome efficiency and public works programmes. Can the ‘impressive’ growth rates registered by the Indian economy last in the long run? If so, are they inclusive of the key dimensions of well-being? Can the balance between India’s demand for and supply of natural capital make the country an ecological debtor? This volume, in honour of Professor U. Sankar, addresses such significant debates and provides policy initiatives to tackle these issues. This book argues that sustainable development as a long-term objective demands a paradigm shift in the approach to viewing ecology and that sustainability has to be assessed in terms of economic, social and environmental outcomes.

Book excerpt: Environmental and pollution related aspects are normally discussed in the context of health and societal aspects only. This is correct also as society by a large directly barely gets effected in this context. It does not mean that this problem is merely confined to such limited area. The impact is huge and gigantic for the economy of the developed and developing countries. It doesn't mean that the under developed countries will not have any impact. The impact will be on them also but they have very less to lose.

This volume explores fresh perspectives on the issues of wellbeing, Asian economic development and environmental concerns. The book is organised along six themes: issues in sustainability of Asian agriculture; ecological concerns in theory and practice; core themes in economic development; resource management and policy alternatives; discrimination and socio-economic equity in development; and peasant distress and sustainability of cotton economy. The articles are based on unique quantitative data and a rigorous analytical framework for examining policies for an equitable economic and environmental international regime.
