Book excerpt: Research Paper (postgraduate) from the year 2022 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: A, University of Calabar (Faculty of Arts & Social Science Education), course: The Structure and Organization of Social Studies and New Education Initiatives, language: English, abstract: This paper explores the effectiveness of entrepreneurship in job creation, hence, underlining the importance of the MSMEs sub-sector in the socioeconomic development of the Nigerian economy. Nowadays, the burden of job creation is not solely placed on the shoulders of the government alone but, has become a joint-venture effort between the public and private sectors. On this premise, the paper seeks an enduring answer to this prevalent phenomenon in entrepreneurship development. So, the paper is divided into subheadings, covering the introduction, conceptual explications, theoretical discourse on MSMEs as the driving force of socioeconomic development, and the role of entrepreneurship in the socioeconomic development of Nigeria. The paper concludes by noting that, the transformation of Nigeria's education system into entrepreneurial-based is a way of empowering the young generations with practical skills that could help them become self-reliant (self-employed), thus reducing the increasing social vices and consequences of unemployment. Among others, it was recommended to incorporate entrepreneurship in our school curriculum where vocational subjects would become compulsory right from Upper Basic Education level through tertiary education level to train, prepare, and develop the economic mindset of the younger generations and decrease the high level of unemployment.

Book excerpt: This paper underscores the importance of policy formulation in entrepreneurship development in Nigeria as well as the importance of entrepreneurship in reducing the ever-growing rate of unemployment in Nigeria. The methodology adopted for this paper is the narrative-textual case study (NTCS); it is a social science research method that relies on information and data from several sources for problem identification and problem solving. The paper opines that entrepreneurship is lacking in Nigeria due to certain challenges such as epileptic power supply, lack of genuine support for those intending to start up a business, lack of strong willed-power to take risk; all these and more inhibit entrepreneurship development and creates unemployment. The paper concludes that government policy on entrepreneurship should be more robust and that government should create conducive business environments to enhance entrepreneurship development and reduction in youth unemployment.

Youth unemployment and underemployment are at a record high. More than ever, the Nigerian youths are in dire need of finding other avenues to explore in pursuit of life endeavors. Youth employment, underemployment, and unemployment are serious concerns for our society, civilization, and the nation. Ehiobuche and Madueke took a different approach to discussing and presenting a practical approach to youth entrepreneurshipfrom the notion of a shared responsibility for the change of mindset from falling into the victims theory dimensions to intelligent ventures and resilience. Their model presents insight on how a paradigm shift among the youths and the society in general from job search to business development may well lead to entrepreneurs and self-productive citizens. The authors hope to inspire, inform, and encourage todays youths to become tomorrows entrepreneurs, leaders, and good citizens. Making the transition from seeking employment, unemployment, or underemployment to self-employment/entrepreneurship is the primary purpose of this book. The topics include the following: Conquering personal and cultural roadblocks to entrepreneurship Shifting mental and physical focus from employee to employer Avoiding common pitfalls in starting and running a sustainable small business Making the best out of being a youth The authors urge the Nigerian youths to avoid falling into a victim mentality and start their paradigm shift into the mindsets of entrepreneurs.

Book excerpt: Education in Nigeria is devoid of the element crucial to averting the surging rate of unemployment in the country, therefore the breeding of psychological dependence on direct access to money. Entrepreneurial development through education will advance the economy of the nation; much credence should be given to it and ingrained with focus on profitable personal development. Unemployment prevails in the country, hence, the growth of violence, poverty and segregation amongst citizens, because the educational system itself fails to empower the ones passing through it. This research work, therefore examines the strategies of entrepreneurial education that currently operates in the country bringing to light the dimensions of how it can be used to remedy the social ills of the country.

Book excerpt: This paper sets out to comparatively analyze various programs developed by the governments of Nigeria and Ghana towards alleviating unemployment. The inadequacies which have bedeviled these government assisted programs and their consequent failures warrant a review and reconsideration. The research employed qualitative case method with interviews as tools for data collection. Findings revealed a plethora of evidential facts with respect to perception of entrepreneurship in these countries which hinged on challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of requisite trainings, dearth of entrepreneurship education as well as the enabling environments. Most obvious among these challenges are the complete lack of governmental supports for the programs they propagated leading to the failure of various employment alleviation programs. This paper recommends the enactment of clear-cut policies by the governments under the leadership of a specialized ministry (ministry for entrepreneurship). Furthermore, a review and inclusion of entrepreneurship in the academic curriculum at all levels of the educational system will endear students to entrepreneurship studies. Finally, a holistic support of the organized private sectors in achieving a quantifiable target of full-fledged entrepreneurs within a decade will assist in unemployment reduction.

Book excerpt: In Nigeria, achieving a substantial reduction in youth unemployment and poverty is an attainable goal if the government steps up to the challenge and creates a conducive environment for small businesses to prosper. This book utilizes a convergent mixed-methods design to explore how entrepreneurship can be leveraged to address the pressing issues of youth unemployment and poverty in Nigeria. The study employs the theory of planned behavior as its theoretical framework, which posits that young people's inclination towards entrepreneurship depends on their attitude towards it, subjective norms, and perceived behavioral controls. To examine the factors influencing the entrepreneurial intentions of young Nigerians, the research collected quantitative data from 447 graduating students at a federal university in Southern Nigeria. The study employed the structural equation modeling partial least squares (SEM-PLS) procedure to analyze the data and test hypotheses. The findings reveal a significant relationship between the attitude towards entrepreneurship and the entrepreneurial intentions of Nigerian students (ß=0.632, t=6.298, p

Book excerpt: Seminar paper from the year 2017 in the subject Business economics - Business Management, Corporate Governance, grade: A.1, , language: English, abstract: The failure of both the government and the press in their supposed responsibilities to rouse the teeming populated unemployed graduates to entrepreneurship is the paramount reason for the current high rates of crimes, social vices and violence as the products of high unemployment in Nigeria. Nigerian graduates, especially those from the lower class, the poor, are now treated like nonentities that are stack illiterates. These underlying problems ground this study. The study is aimed at exploring the extent to which government and the press have roused the interest of Nigerian youths, particularly the unemployed graduates, to entrepreneurship. The study reveals that: the government of all levels and the press have done little or nothing to rouse the interest of the unemployed graduates to entrepreneurship; existing entrepreneurs of this class often suffer severe capital issues, which discourages intending entrepreneurs, other unemployed graduates, as the government only aids those who have ‘people in Government House(s) and other high class offices’. It maintains (recommends) that the best way for the government to rouse their interest to entrepreneurship is to drop lip-service and practically mobilise and support jobless youths to become self-employed and thus become automatically detached from all forms of social ills, having taking to it as an alternative. Then, the Press takes it up from there by making entrepreneurship a splash to the unemployed graduates and the general masses. The study is anchored on the psychological or entrepreneurial trait school and the managerial skills school cum the economic development theory. This study concludes that until the government and the press turn a new leave and practically and actively begin to rouse the interest of the unemployed graduates to entrepreneurship, as a practical alternative, unemployment would continue to increase alarmingly, with its devastating menace. The non-participant observation, oral interview and intuition are the primary sources employed, while closely related literature formed the secondary sources.

Book excerpt: For many years, entrepreneurship has been considered as one of the most important solutions to the three-pronged challenges, poverty, unemployment and inequality, of most African countries. A recent development that has undoubtedly compounded the challenges that African entrepreneurs face and further impede the economic growth impact is Covid-19. This pandemic has exerted severe damage to economies and businesses globally. For the African setting, the implications of Covid-19 on businesses and individuals would be enormous, as African societies are rarely equipped to absorb unexpected shocks of this magnitude as the social and welfare schemes are far below requirements. This book illuminates entrepreneurship in the African setting, focusing on the prospects, challenges, and the post-Covid-19 pandemic future. It aims to offer a rich repository of information on strategies and techniques for sustaining entrepreneurial activities that can enrich African nations and will be of relevance to academics, researchers, advanced students, entrepreneurs, governments, and government agencies who are interested in understanding issues relating to entrepreneurship development within the African continent.

Book excerpt: The issues of entrepreneurship development and employment generation continue to receive high attention because of their impact on unemployment and poverty reduction in many parts of the world. The National Directorate of Employment was introduced by government in its efforts toward employment generation. In furtherance of attempts toward tackling unemployment, addressing issues of poverty and vulnerability and promoting inclusive finance at the grass-root levels, the Directorate has a Special Micro Empowerment Scheme, which is aimed at promoting social inclusion and job creation. Micro, Small and Medium enterprises such as water/beverage sales, shoe making, shining, among other vocations account for about 99.6 percent of registered businesses in Nigeria by which about 63 percent of the labour force earn a living. The Directorate has created over 2.076 million employments since it was established. The NDEs one million job creation programme remains a wonderful idea in employment generation. The survey research method was used for the study. Surveys refer to an investigation of events that exist at the time of the research and connected with some problem situations that is felt over a wide area. Data analysis was done through Pearson's techniques. The result showed a very strong positive correlation between entrepreneurship development and employment generation. This is the aim of the study.

Book excerpt: Although the government, its agencies, and other key stakeholders are aware of the relevance of entrepreneurship in enhancing and sustaining national growth and development through more job creation, and the strengthening of the nation's industrial base, they have failed to give it the deserved attention at tertiary education level. This paper examines the significant role played by creative self-development through effective technical entrepreneurship education at the Nigerian tertiary education level towards tackling the deteriorating problem of unemployment among Nigerian graduates. Being a descriptive study, close-ended questionnaires based on 5-point Likert scale were distributed to a total of 300 respondents comprising undergraduates, lecturing staff, personnel managers, and entrepreneurs from Anambra and Lagos State, and the data generated was tested using the multiple regression techniques (a nonparametric statistical tool). The results showed that although creative selfdevelopment programs upheld by some prominent universities in Nigeria as part of their academic requirements for students, have really played a vital role in reducing the ever-increasing challenges of unemployment among their graduates, a lot of Nigerian graduates still remain unemployable because they have failed to translate their wealth of knowledge acquired into skills required by the labor market for their employment. Based on this fact, it is recommended that the government and all key players in the Nigerian tertiary education system should restructure and restrategize the entrepreneurship education programs of Nigerian universities.

Book excerpt: Doctoral Thesis / Dissertation from the year 2018 in the subject Economics - Job market economics, grade: 4,00, Atlantic International University (Atlantic International University), course: Business and Economics, language: English, abstract: This study looks at entrepreneurship, research and business management education which can be used as remedies for unemployment and poverty in Botswana. Research has shown a worldwide continual growth of entrepreneurial education in higher institutions Though some researchers paid more attention on entrepreneurship education, this has been based on teaching entrepreneurship as an embedded unit in different programmes, which does not fully equip learners with relevant skills into starting their own businesses. Entrepreneurship, research and business management programmes would benefit potential graduates’ entrepreneurs in their quest to engage in entrepreneurial activities. Like other developing countries, Botswana is striving to build a knowledge based. Quite a large number of graduates and those who were not privileged to go through tertiary education are unemployed which results in an increase on poverty cases. The situation is pitiable as universities, tertiary institutions and brigades are producing a large number of graduates annually and these graduates have no place to go. Research shows that, unemployment is a problem as it encourages poverty, hooliganism, robberies, house breakings, prostitution and political instability just to mention a few. One of the factors to consider for the business to succeed is training and education of staff. This study aims to find out if a standalone programme on entrepreneurship, including research and business management could be another means of encouraging entrepreneurship and innovation in the country, targeting those who are interested in entrepreneurship as offered as a post graduate programme.
