Book Synopsis Plant and Animal Endemism in California by : Susan Harrison
Download or read book Plant and Animal Endemism in California written by Susan Harrison and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 2013-05-15 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: California is globally renowned for its biological diversity, including its wealth of unique, or endemic, species. Many reasons have been cited to explain this abundance: the complex geology and topography of its landscape, the special powers of its Mediterranean-type climate, and the historic and modern barriers to the wider dispersal of its flora and fauna. Plant and Animal Endemism in California compiles and synthesizes a wealth of data on this singular subject, providing new and updated lists of native species, comparing patterns and causes of both plant and animal endemism, and interrogating the classic explanations proposed for the state’s special significance in light of new molecular evidence. Susan Harrison also offers a summary of the innovative tools that have been developed and used in California to conserve and protect this stunning and imperiled diversity.
Book Synopsis An Archaeology of Abundance by : Kristina M. Gill
Download or read book An Archaeology of Abundance written by Kristina M. Gill and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2019-01-23 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The islands of Alta and Baja California changed dramatically in the centuries after Spanish colonists arrived. Native populations were decimated by disease, and their lives were altered through forced assimilation and the cessation of traditional foraging practices. Overgrazing, overfishing, and the introduction of nonnative species depleted natural resources severely. Most scientists have assumed the islands were also relatively marginal for human habitation before European contact, but An Archaeology of Abundance reassesses this long-held belief, analyzing new lines of evidence suggesting that the California islands were rich in resources important to human populations. Contributors examine data from Paleocoastal to historic times that suggest the islands were optimal habitats that provided a variety of foods, fresh water, minerals, and fuels for the people living there. Botanical remains from these sites, together with the modern resurgence of plant communities after the removal of livestock, challenge theories that plant foods had to be imported for survival. Geoarchaeological surveys show that the islands had a variety of materials for making stone tools, and zooarchaeological data show that marine resources were abundant and that the translocation of plants and animals from the mainland further enhanced an already rich resource base. Studies of extensive exchange, underwater forests of edible seaweeds, and high island population densities also support the case for abundance on the islands. Concluding that the California islands were not marginal environments for early humans, the discoveries presented in this volume hold significant implications for reassessing the ancient history of islands around the world that have undergone similar ecological transformations. A volume in the series Society and Ecology in Island and Coastal Archaeology, edited by Victor D. Thompson

Book Synopsis A Bibliography of Ant Systematics by : Philip S. Ward
Download or read book A Bibliography of Ant Systematics written by Philip S. Ward and published by Univ of California Press. This book was released on 1996-01-01 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography is a comprehensive compilation of the literature on ant systematics. Covering the period 1758 to 1995, it contains entries for approximately 8,000 publications on the taxonomy, evolution, and comparative biology of ants. Most of the literature citations have been carefully verified and precisely dated. An introductory chapter discusses the problems associated with dating a citation of taxonomic literature. A list of all serials cited (more than 1,300 titles) and their abbreviations accompanies the bibliography.
Book Synopsis Catalogue of the Tiger Beetles of Canada and the United States by : Richard Freitag
Download or read book Catalogue of the Tiger Beetles of Canada and the United States written by Richard Freitag and published by NRC Research Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Since the 1960s, American and Canadian fisheries have been introducing salmonines such as rainbow trout and chinook and coho salmon to the Great Lakes in order to develop new recreational fisheries. In this study, Crawford (ichthyology, U. of Guelph) examines the effects of non-native fish populations on the Great Lakes ecosystem. He contends that the ongoing introduction of non-native salmonines poses an ecologically- significant risk and that the practice should be terminated. The volume is not indexed. Book Synopsis The Sand Wasps by : Howard Ensign EVANS
Download or read book The Sand Wasps written by Howard Ensign EVANS and published by Harvard University Press. This book was released on 2009-06-30 with total page 362 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Howard Evans was a brilliant ethologist and systematist, describing over 900 species in over a dozen entomology and natural history books. Upon his death in 2002, he left behind an unfinished manuscript, intended as an update of his classic 1966 work, The Comparative Ethology and Evolution of the Sand Wasps. O'Neill, Evans's former student and coauthor, has completed and enlarged this work into a tribe-by-tribe, species-by-species review of Bembicinae studies from the last four decades.
