Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Entomology To-day the public has come to appreciate that insect life plays a most-important part in the economy of our civilization. Some of the problems which require the work of the trained entomologist are worthy of the highest scientific training and best executive ability. Insects and disease. The modern methods of sanitation for the control of malarial fever and yellow fever involve the control of mosquitoes, which transmit these diseases. More and more the sanitary measures which are making the tropics habitable for the more northern races of man are being made possible by a knowl edge of the relation of insect life to the transmission of disease. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Outlines of Entomology If the writer shall succeed in introducing this delightful branch of natural history to even a few of those who are surrounded by the bean ful and interesting objects discussed and if in these pages the victim of insect depredations obtains a few hints concerning the vulnerable stages in the lives of his tiny but collectively potent foes, the work will not have been done in vain. In conclusion, I must acknowledge my great indebtedness to the works of Dr. C.V. Riley, U. S. Entomologist, Dr. A. S. Packard, whose Guide and Entomology for Beginners are so admirably adapted to the use of those desiring a thorough knowledge of the structure of in sect. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Entomology This book gives a comprehensive and concise account of insects. Though planned primarily for the student, it is intended also for the general reader. The book was written in an effort to meet the growing demand for a biological treatment of entomology. The existence of several excellent works on the classification of insects (notably Comstock's Manual, Kellogg's American Insects and Sharp's Insects) has enabled the author to omit the multitudinous details of classification and to introduce much material that hitherto has not appeared in text-books. As a rule, only the commonest kinds of insects are referred to, in the text, in order that the reader may easily use the text as a guide to per sonal observation. All the illustrations have been prepared by the author, and such as have been copied from other works are duly credited. To Dr. S. A. Forbes the author is especially indebted for the use of literature, ispecimens and drawings belonging to the Illinois State Laboratory of Natural History. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Dry-Fly Fisherman's Entomology The Introduction to this book was written ir. the year 1913. An explanation therefore becomes due, setting forth the reasons for so long a delay in its publication. Perhaps the chief cause has been the difficulty of finding an artist with sufficient technical skill who could and would undertake a task of such difficulty as the hand-colouring of the large number of coloured figures shown on the seventeen plates. The Author was particularly fortunate in securing the services of Mr. Banfield, who spared no pains in painting the original models from which the figures have been copied. Then the European war intervened, and Mr. Banfield proceeded on service before the task had been completed. Other delays arose by reason of the War: still more, again, by reason of the Peace. In these strenuous times, the difficulty of finding colourists willing to devote the time required for copying the minute details shown on the plates has become more and more accentuated. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Our Common Insects: First Steps to Entomology Most insects undergo metamorphoses, or transfor mations, into three distinct stages: first, the larva, or grub, when they are most voracious, and Often commit great ravages in the vegetable world; secondly, the pupa, or torpid state, wherein they are inert, and do net feed; and, thirdly, the imago, or perfect insect, during which final period they prepagate the Species, eat very little, and seem to have the full enjoyment of their airy existence. It is a curious fact concerning these apparently insignificant beings, that they exceed in number all other classes of animals put together. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Textbook of Medical Entomology I have watched this book through all its stages and I know perhaps better than any one else the enormous labour that has been entailed by its preparation. It covers an immense and in many places untrodden field it is moreover thoroughly practical and the greatest care has been taken in the description of technique. For both these reasons it will be extremely useful to all workers in Medical Entomology, and I trust that it will meet with the success which it undoubtedly deserves. With these few remarks I leave the book to speak for itself. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
