'If you're looking for a gripping rural crime thriller, look no further.' - Better Reading Emma Cameron, a recently divorced farmer and a local in Barker, runs Deception Creek, the farm that three generations of her family have owned before her. Every day Emma pushes herself hard on the land, hoping to make ten-year-old memories of a terrible car accident disappear. And now there are more recent nightmares of an ex-husband who refuses to understand how much the farm means to Emma. When Joel Hammond is released from jail and heads home to Barker, Detective Dave Burrows and Senior Constable Jack Higgins are on high alert. Joel has a long and sorry history with many of the townsfolk and they are not keen to see him home to stay. Not all of the Barker locals want to see Joel run out of town, though. Download or read book Angel on a Leash written by David Frei and published by Fox Chapel Publishing. This book was released on 2011-11-08 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: David Frei’s heartwarming collection of stories about the therapy dogs in his life and the people whom they touch, Angel on a Leash celebrates the “ministry” that Frei shares with his wife, Chaplain Cherilyn Frei, the director of spiritual care at the Ronald McDonald House of New York.Frei may be the most recognizable face and name in the dog sport, as “the Voice of Westminster,” the famous New York kennel club for which he has worked for the past two decades, but his true passion in dogs is therapy work. In the book’s eighteen chapters, Frei retells the stories of the everyday miracles he’s witnessed his therapy dogs perform over hundreds of trips to their favorite places. Currently in his second generation of therapy dogs, Frei gives his Cavalier King Charles Spaniel “Angel” and Brittany “Grace” all the credit for the life-altering work they do cheering up ailing children at Morgan Stanley’s Children’s Hospital, spending time with recovering patients at NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital, and placing a paw in the hand of world-weary veterans at the Washington DC VA Medical Center. Never sappy or sentimental, Frei’s writing style is straightforward and honest with a swiftness that keeps the reader turning pages (and wiping tears). Beyond the inspiring storytelling, the book also offers practical advice to potential therapy dog handlers about how to get a dog certified with a proper registry, the responsibilities that accompany therapy work, and the importance of community involvement. Frei’s association with Westminster yielded the formation of a nonprofit organization called Angel on a Leash (the book’s namesake), which Frei was the key founder. Although the organization is now a separate entity from its famous “parent,” Best in Show winners of Westminster have frequently retired from the show ring into the realm of therapy work, receiving Frei’s encouragement and guidance. Among the many exquisite moments captured in the book’s photography section are portraits of Rufus, the Colored Bull Terrier; James, the English Spring Spaniel; and Uno, the Beagle, all supreme victors of the famous show, spending time with children on therapy visits.

Download or read book It's All in the Name written by Sharita Star and published by SteinerBooks. This book was released on 2010-12 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It's All in the Name explains the concept of Lexigrams and the uncanny magic they can unfold for self-knowledge. The author begins by introducing simple words and taking the reader on a journey that shows how much we can find the truth we are searching for is contained within the words we use every day. After offering a few rules to guide the Lexigram process (and suggesting times to break those rules), she explains the interconnections among Lexigrams, astrology, and numerology. Sharita Star goes on to show how many of the Lexigrams that can be derived from names and titles relate to the very astrological and numerical guidance that governs them, providing historical evidence to show how this dynamic works. To do so, she offers references to zodiacal Sun signs and the Chaldean understanding of numerology. Moreover, Sharita provides numerous case studies of well-know individuals, past and present. It's All in the Name is a valuable tool for exploring the profound inner meanings of names and everyday words and for deepening one's intuitive capacity.
Download or read book #NotConsumed written by Kim Sorgius and published by . This book was released on 2016-02-22 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The truth is... life is full of trials that threaten to consume us. The little things. The big things. The kid things. The relationship things. Little by little we are consuming ourselves with these "things" and we don't even know it. In fact, we are too busy trying to make it look better (ya know- on social media) and pretending that our lives look like everyone else's to even notice the truth about it all.But our negligence doesn't change the facts. We are consumed. Burned out. Stressed out. Unhealthy. And most of all unhappy.Day after day we get back on the hamster wheel chasing some "perfect life" that we are certain has to be out there. We keep pushing forward, doing more and more, and feeling disappointed that we can't seem to get there. But all of that is about to change. If you are willing to let it, that is. You see, there is a secret to not letting life consume you. There is a way to do it all and have it all. The trouble is, we are just a little confused about the definition of "all." We need to do a little re-defining and a little truth-claiming if we are going to fix this. So what do you say? Are you ready to become #NOTCONSUMED?
Book Synopsis Bound Lives by : Rachel Sarah O'Toole
Download or read book Bound Lives written by Rachel Sarah O'Toole and published by University of Pittsburgh Pre. This book was released on 2012-04-15 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bound Lives chronicles the lived experience of race relations in northern coastal Peru during the colonial era. Rachel Sarah O'Toole examines how Andeans and Africans negotiated and employed casta, and in doing so, constructed these racial categories. Royal and viceregal authorities separated "Indians" from "blacks" by defining each to specific labor demands. Casta categories did the work of race, yet, not all casta categories did the same type of work since Andeans, Africans, and their descendants were bound by their locations within colonialism and slavery. The secular colonial legal system clearly favored indigenous populations. Andeans were afforded greater protections as "threatened" native vassals. Despite this, in the 1640s during the rise of sugar production, Andeans were driven from their assigned colonial towns and communal property by a land privatization program. Andeans did not disappear, however; they worked as artisans, muleteers, and laborers for hire. By the late seventeenth and early eighteenth centuries, Andeans employed their legal status as Indians to defend their prerogatives to political representation that included the policing of Africans. As rural slaves, Africans often found themselves outside the bounds of secular law and subject to the judgments of local slaveholding authorities. Africans therefore developed a rhetoric of valuation within the market and claimed new kinships to protect themselves in disputes with their captors and in slave-trading negotiations. Africans countered slaveholders' claims on their time, overt supervision of their labor, and control of their rest moments by invoking customary practices. Bound Lives offers an entirely new perspective on racial identities in colonial Peru. It highlights the tenuous interactions of colonial authorities, indigenous communities, and enslaved populations and shows how the interplay between colonial law and daily practice shaped the nature of colonialism and slavery.
Download or read book Aol.com written by Kara Swisher and published by Three Rivers Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 404 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In 1996, Kara Swisher, then a reporter at The Washington Post, was granted unprecedented access to one of the hottest and most closely watched companies in the world, America Online, Inc. In aol.com, Swisher has written a book that captures the secrets of how AOL beat the competition and became the world's biggest online company. Swisher also reveals the company's behind-the-scenes dealings with Microsoft cofounders Bill Gates and Paul Allen, CompuServe, Prodigy, Netscape, and the Christian Right. Throughout its existence, AOL has repeatedly been written off by the media and the high-tech world. Bill Gates threatened to buy it or bury it. Deep-pocketed competitors such as CompuServe and Prodigy thought little of their smaller rival. And AOL made matters worse by committing a series of public-relations and technical blunders that became front page news and enraged its subscribers. But the company--a "cyber-cockroach"--refused to die. Now, with over eleven million subscribers, AOL is the undisputed leader in the online world, vitally positioned at the nexus of big business, high tech, advertising, and new media. In telling the story of AOL, Swisher also conveys the fascinating history of the online business, which has its origins in the dreams of an eccentric and little-known entrepreneur named Bill Von Meister, whose grand ideas and big spending spawned the fledgling company that would become AOL. But it fell to a young marketing executive named Steve Case to build AOL while fending off an onslaught of wealthier competitors and suitors. Ultimately, as Swisher vividly illustrates, AOL gained supremacy because Case possessed the best vision for his company, establishing AOL as avibrant virtual community rather than an online shopping center or business tool. Included in that community is an array of enthusiasts, activists, and deviants who at times clash in battles over freedom of expression and family values, a flash point best illustrated here by AOL's fight against the Communications Decency Act. Re-creating all of the major moments in AOL's frenzied history, aol.com is a fascinating and important inside story about the birth of a new medium, the enterprising innovators who are leading it, and the way it is changing our culture.
