Book Synopsis Birch Supply, Lumber Potential and Cost in Alberta by : Jasper Millworks Ltd
Download or read book Birch Supply, Lumber Potential and Cost in Alberta written by Jasper Millworks Ltd and published by Canadian Forestry Service. This book was released on 1987 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jasper Millworks has been trying to purchase rough birch lumber to use in the production of finished specialty items and supply has been a problem. An assessment of the feasibility of logging and sawing birch in Northern Alberta and hauling it to Edmonton for drying and finishing was undertaken and a pilot project was set up in the Whitecourt and Slave Lake forests. The aim was to cut and saw 1,475 fbm of birch located in a commercial stand of spruce. Potential birch stands were located through discussions with Alberta Forest Service personnel, local logging contractors, and small sawmill operators. Once located, birch stands were inventoried and cull plots were established. Total birch volumes for the two areas were estimated using a combination of inventory compilation data, deciduous-enhanced forest cover maps, and local experience. Results obtained include green lumber weight, birch logging costs, and other estimated costs for sawing and hauling.

This book was released on 1988 with total page 152 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While there are many companies in Alberta involved in secondary manufacturing of solid wood products, little information was available on the nature, extent, and activities of the various industry sectors involved. This report identifies the present status of such products, as well as both existing and potential markets. Information is given on each of the secondary manufacturing industry sectors, the types of companies involved and the raw material consumed, and the level of activity of the sector. The results of market studies in Toronto and the United States Midwest are summarized with a commentary on the potential for Alberta manufacturers. A list of manufacturers contacted is included, with name and address of company, the nature of its business, and its size.
Book Synopsis Overwintering Container Seedlings Using Underground Heat by : T. D. Ellis
Download or read book Overwintering Container Seedlings Using Underground Heat written by T. D. Ellis and published by Forestry Canada. This book was released on 1989 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Overwintering of container-grown tree seedlings carries with it the risk of damage and mortality from low root temperatures and dessication, an important consideration to many nursery operators, especially for those who need to carry a crop outside over winter. This study was undertaken to examine root temperatures associated with overwintering in an outdoor compound, to review the literature to obtain information on root temperatures at which reduced seedling viability results, and to evaluate the potential of underground heating for ameliorating container temperatures. Winter moisture stress was also considered. A test plot was set up over the 1987-8 winter at the Joffre nursery of Naval Enterprises, a commercial producer of tree seedlings. The plot was about 20 feet square and a centre area was heated from below by an electric heater. Moisture stress was monitored using a pressure chamber.
Book Synopsis Shingles and Shakes from Alberta Jack Pine and Aspen by : Silvacom Ltd
Download or read book Shingles and Shakes from Alberta Jack Pine and Aspen written by Silvacom Ltd and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Lac La Biche Regional Economic Development Council commissioned a study to determine if any real potential exists for the production of shingles or shakes from the local wood supply, since local entrepreneurs had set up a shingle mill and were producing small quantities of pine shingles for the local market. The study began in November 1987 and was completed in March 1988, addressing the physical manufacture of shakes from local timber, the likely grade and yield, the costs of production, and the possibility of competing with other wood roofing materials. The study first examined the jack pine shingle product being produced by Aspen Mills Ltd. of McRae, Alberta, evaluated the product and tested it for preservative treatability. Previous Alberta work was reviewed, as was the taper sawn shake development program currently being undertaken by the Texas Forest Service.
Book Synopsis Effect of Scarf Joints on Bending Properties of Laminated Veneer Lumber by : Forintek Canada Corp
Download or read book Effect of Scarf Joints on Bending Properties of Laminated Veneer Lumber written by Forintek Canada Corp and published by Forestry Canada,cc1989.. This book was released on 1989 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The laminated veneer lumber (LVL) industry is relatively new with a history of less than 20 years in large scale production. While LVL is stronger due to the many overlapping layers and can obtain higher yields than sawn lumber, it is also more expensive to produce. Veneers come in 8 ft or 4 ft lengths, and therefore end joints are necessary to produce longer structural members. Both scarf joints and butt joints are used to produce these longer members but the relative strength of each is not well known. This project was initiated to study the effect of scarf joints on the flatwise MOR of LVL. Aspen veneers used were obtained from a plywood mill in northern Ontario and were tested for bending strength in 13-ply, 7-ply, and 5-ply sizes with and without scarf joints.
