Pourquoi est-il important d'etudier la prononciation des apprenants? Il est certain qu'une bonne prononciation facilite la communication. L'apprentissage du francais pour les Americains ncessairement inclut l'acquisition des nouveaux sons. Selon Callamand 1981, le fait que les etudiants de francais distinguent difficilement le /y/ du /u/ suggere que ce son doit etre pratique inicialement dans des entourages qui favorisent la tension et l'acuite. Callamand recours aux contextes facilitants qui permettent de favoriser l'acquisition de ces trais. Ces contextes sont toutes les consonnes aigues. L'etude consiste premierement a presenter une selection systematique des contextes vocaliques et consonantiques, base sur l'approche de Callamand, pour decrire les erreurs de prononciation des etudiants americains. Deuxiement, cette etude comprend une analyse acoustique des differents phones produits par les etudiants. Les etudes relatives a l'acquisition du francais par des Americains datent des annees trente. Ces etudes se sont limitees a l'aspect auditif. Les etudes descriptives d'ordre acoustique ne sont pas nombreuses. Le choix d'une approche acoustique sert a remplacer la subjectivite des auditeurs par une analyse empirique ou la production des sons apparai t concise. Dans cette recherche on a utilise trois niveaux d'etudiants (debutants, intermediaire et avance) et on a compare leurs productions des phonemes a celle d'un groupe francophone. La selection des voyelles a ete faite en fonction des etudes auditives precedentes (Walz 1979 et 1980). On a choisi les voyelles /i/ et /u/ parce que ces phonemes existent dans le systeme phonologique de l'anglais mais ils sont realises avec des valeurs acoustiques differents. On a aussi selectione le /y/ parce qu'il est absent du systeme phonologique de l'anglais. L'etude confirme les resultats de l'experience des Walz 1979 et 1980 selon laquelle les etudiants americains prononcent un /u/ a la place d'un /y/. L'etude confirme egalement la proposition de Callamand 1981, lorsque les etudiants prononcent mieux le /y/ et le /i/ dans les contextes aigues.
