Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Insurance is one of Hong Kong's oldest industries. In the nineteenth century the lucrative trade between China and Europe carried many risks - piracy, warfare, fire, loss of goods, and other mishaps. Dozens of different insurance firms - some home-grown, others imported - established themselves in the colony to protect ships and their cargoes. With the diversification of Hong Kong's economy into manufacturing and services, Hong Kong became a global centre of insurance, and the industry continues to transform itself today through changing practices and new lines of business. This is the first comprehensive history of Hong Kong's insurance industry, and it argues its central importance in the economy. Typhoons, shipwrecks, fires, wars, political turbulence and unexpected events of all kinds provide a dramatic background to a fascinating survey; the book is richly illustrated with photographs and documents. Ngaw Mee Kauis a former vice president of Lingnan University, Hong Kong.Feng Bangyanis professor of the College of Economics, Jinan University. "The book will help students better understand the development of the industry and the important role it plays in Hong Kong, as well as building up their knowledge and sense of belonging in the industry. It will be of interest to people from the field of insurance and finance, people who are interested in Hong Kong history, as well as the general public." -- Chan Kin-por, chief executive, Hong Kong office, Munich Re

Book excerpt: Vitamin and mineral (micronutrient) deficiencies impose high economic costs on virtually every developing country. But programs for alleviating these deficiencies are among the most cost-effective of all health programs—with high rates of return in terms of human resources. 'World Development Report 1993: Investing in Health' highlighted both needs and opportunities in this area. This report provides detailed arguments for addressing micronutrient malnutrition and practical advice drawn from program experience. The book suggests three main strategies: • Educate consumers so that they fully appreciate and understand the importance of micronutrients in their diet • Encourage the fortification of foodstuffs by combining market incentives and regulatory enforcement • Distribute, as a last resort, micronutrient capsules and other supplements, using all public and private channels available. World Bank-assisted projects in 30 countries now have micronutrient components. This number could grow, but the effort will require stronger partnerships with nongovernmental organizations, private industry, and international organizations.

Few people embody the American entrepreneurial spirit as plainly as Rich DeVos. A prominent businessman, self-made billionaire, philanthropist, worldwide speaker, bestselling author, family man, and devout Christian, DeVos not only helped create Amway, one of the world’s biggest companies, but he did it from the ground up with his deep faith in God guiding the way and keeping his hopes alive. His grandfather, father, and teachers taught him valuable lessons and key principles about faith, optimism, and perseverance that would guide his entire life. In high school, he befriended Jay Van Andel, who later became his business partner. Together, they created a whole new way to sell products and established one of the largest, most successful companies in the world. Book excerpt: Rhythms of life represent the courage to live life fully by striking the right balance between the physical, social, spiritual, material and emotional well-being. The entire universe is built on a delicate balance. Every night is followed by a day, every fall makes way for spring, every life is followed by death and every action has a reaction. There is perfect rhythm everywhere. In an orchestra, when all the instruments are playing in harmony, the sound is pleasing to the ears. However if any instrument is out of tune, the same pleasing symphony can become displeasing. Likewise, if life is in rhythm it is pleasing and fun. However when its balance is affected, the pleasure of living fades into anxiety, stress and negativity. This book will help you to develop self awareness, to understand what gives you happiness, and how best to maintain your rhythms of life. It will help uncover where the everlasting secret of happiness lies-it lies inside each one of us.

This book is full of examples to help you get better at transporting your thoughts and emotions into the minds of other people.” —Adam Grant, New York Times bestselling author of Give and Take, Originals, and Option B with Sheryl Sandberg How to master the art of persuasion—from the bestselling author of Talk Like TED. Ideas don’t sell themselves. As the forces of globalization, automation, and artificial intelligence combine to disrupt every field, having a good idea isn’t good enough. Mastering the ancient art of persuasion is the key to standing out, getting ahead, and achieving greatness in the modern world. Communication is no longer a “soft” skill—it is the human edge that will make you unstoppable, irresistible, and irreplaceable—earning you that perfect rating, that fifth star. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: According to the end-of-millennium Arts and Entertainment Television Network survey, the single most influential person of the last thousand years was Johann Gutenberg, the inventor of the printing press. The revolutionary advent of moveable metal type made possible the diffusion of books to people around the world, profoundly influencing the lives of many famous historical figures thereafter. This book attempts to demonstrate the role that reading has played throughout the course of history. It documents the lives of nine individuals of outstanding achievement whose efforts were molded by the books they read. The subjects are presented in chronological order according to birth. Respective chapters contain brief biographies of the subjects and discuss the ways in which each used books as a principal aid in the development of his or her exceptional talents. Subjects include Benjamin Franklin, who was in 1724 an active connoisseur in the rapidly growing printing trade, Thomas Jefferson, Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, Susan B. Anthony, Booker T. Washington, Pearl S. Buck, Louis L’Amour, and Nelson Mandela. The book maintains that while these historical figures represent a wide range of talents and influences, to each is attributed invaluable contributions to society. Each was a dedicated reader, inspired to greatness by the power of the written word.

Book excerpt: This is a biography of Dr Felicia Wu. Felicia was a scientist with a successful career in cancer research, but what marked the most extraordinary aspect about her life was her journey as a truly brave cancer patient and an incredibly determined cancer fighter. Originally, this book was intended to be an autobiography written and narrated by Felicia herself. She wanted to share with other cancer sufferers her 13 long years of experience fighting cancer to prepare them for the side effects and uncertainties of the treatment, and also to encourage them to brace and face their own treatment without fear. What she did not realize then was that her time was ticking away, and her life trickling off quickly. Writing her own autobiography proved to be an impossible task. Felicia succumbed to the prolonged battle and departed from this world. Her husband, Dr Cheng-Wen Wu, finished the uncompleted task of writing the book in loving memory of her. The biography of Felicia, originally published in Chinese edition, has been recommended as a reading model for students in schools and was nominated for an award in Taiwan. Felicia''s story had also inspired the production of a documentary film entitled, OC A Passion for Life, OCO funded and sponsored by The American Cancer Society. This biography of Felicia in English edition, painstakingly translated by Dr Cheng-Wen Wu and his collaborating translator, Ms Annie Chen, will certainly live up to its original premise as an inspiration to touch more lives and as a source of strength to all who encounter difficulty, disappointment and hurt at any point of their lives.
