Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enigmas of Life Nine years have now elapsed since the author of the Enigmas of Life ceased to be among us, and eighteen years since he published this book and in republishing it, a few words about him and the work that he did may therefore have become necessary. That it should now be offered to the public in a more accessible form than the one in which it originally appeared, is due to the steady interest it continues to excite in the circle which it has already reached, and the desire of those who have at heart the recognition of its merits that that circle should be more widely extended. The Enigmas of Life was one of Mr Greg's latest works, but it contains the scattered thoughts of a lifetime, which he brought together from the jottings of his note-book when he had reason to believe that they might have value and interest for others. He did not put them forth with any pretensions to a systematic scheme of thought, or a serious contribution to established conclusions, but, as he himself says, rather as suggested thoughts that may fructify in other minds than distinct propositions which it is sought argumentatively to prove. They have charmed and stimulated other minds to a degree which he did not anticipate. As an eminent writer says: The chapters on Malthus and on the non-survival of the Fittest make a very genuine and original contribution to modern thought. But it is the later essays in the little volume that touched most readers, and will for long continue to touch them. They are as far as possible from being vague, or misty, or aimless. Yet they have, what is so curiously rare in English literature, the charm of reverie. They have the ever seductive note of meditation and inwardness, which, when it sounds true, as it assuredly did here, moves the spirit like a divine music. There is none of the thunder of Carlyle (which, for that matter, one may easily come in time to find prodigiously useless and unedifying), there is not the piercing concentrated ring of Emerson: but the complaints, the misgivings, the aspirations of our generation find in certain pages of Mr Greg's book a voice of mingled fervour and a union of contemplative reason with spiritual sensibility, which makes them one of the best expressions of one of the highest moods of this bewildered age. They are in the true key for religious or spiritual composition, as Rousseau's Savoyard Vicar is; thought and emotion are fused without the decorations of misplaced rhetoric. That meditations so stamped with sincerity, and so honestly directed to the actual perplexities of thoughtful people, should have met with wide and grateful acceptance, is no more than might have been expected. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Miltonic Enigmas The gross misconception of incidents, characters and names in the Masque grows out of the endeavor to under stand the matter literally. The Masque is an allegory designed to convey a wholesome warning to the English church and people. 'without adducing the outstanding facts of the situation which will occur to students of Eng lish history, as threatening the purity of society and pri vate life we desire to say at once that the play is directed against the doctrine and practice of Free-love and all that it implies. Comus the magician impersonates the corrupt influence; the Spirit is the Genius of the Seventh Commandment, or Chastity; the Lady is the Christian Church of England; her two Brothers and defenders are Reason and Conscience. The significance of the other names will appear in due order. The Spirit has his mansion before the starry thresh old of Jove's court. Heaven is ruled by Love, not by the Decalogue, but the Virtues which the place demands from those who enter are gate-keepers and exclude the vicious. Especially is this true of Chastity (matt. XXII. Book excerpt: Excerpt from We Moderns: Enigmas and Guesses That a young Scotsman, reacting from the vast emotional assault of the late ferocious war, should have withdrawn himself into an ivory tower in Glasgow town, and there sat himself down in heroic calm to wrestle with the vexatious and no doubt intrinsically insoluble problems of being and becoming - this was surely nothing to cause whispers among connoisseurs of philosophical passion, for that grim, persistent, cold-blooded concern with the fundamental mysteries of the world has been the habit of the Scots ever since they emerged from massacre and blue paint. From blue paint, indeed, the transition was almost instantaneous to blue souls, and the conscience of Britain, such as it is, has dwelt north of the Cheviot Hills ever since. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enigmas of Life The following pages contain rather suggested thoughts that may fructify in other minds than distinct propositions which it is sought argumentatively to prove. In the later years of life the intellectual vision, if often clearer, usually grows less confident and enterprising. Age is content to think, where Youth would have been anxious to demonstrate and establish; and problems and enigmas which, at thirty, I fancied I might be able to solve, I find, at sixty, I must be satisfied simply to propound. By the severer class of scientific reasoners, (if I have any such among my readers), it will, I am aware, be noted with disapproval that throughout this little book there runs an undercurrent of belief in two great doctrines, which yet I do not make the slightest attempt to prove. Fancher, the Psychological Marvel of the Nineteenth Century; Unimpeachable Testimony of Many Witness It is my purpose to state the facts clearly, concisely, and without unnecessary verbiage; and whatever com ments may be made, will be in such form as to leave the reader free to understand the history of her sickness, and the strange things which she has done and is constantly doing, so that he may form his own conclusions, irrespect ive of the opinion of others. I have known Miss Fancher personally for twelve years, and have witnessed some of the strange things here recorded. I have been exceedingly careful to obtain the testimony of the most reliable persons, and in the course of the work copious reference will be made to the same, so that the curious and the doubting, the skeptical and the painstaking may know where to inquire for reliable information, touching the important features of her case. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Enigmas of Psychical Research The present volume may be considered as a sup plement to the one on Science and a Future Life, which has been published. In that work I gave a very inadequate summary of the phenomena bearing upon Telepathy and Apparitions, and I said nothing what ever regarding several other types of phenomena hav ing an equal scientific interest. I was' occupied in that volume with facts related more directly to the question of survival after death, especially as experi mentally supported. In the present book I have seized the opportunity to go over the whole field of the supernormal. While I have discussed Telepathy and Apparitions more exhaustively than before, I have added much material on Crystal Gazing, Coinci dental Dreams, Clairvoyance, and Premonitions, with some illustrations of Mediumistic Phenomena without involving these with the more scientific case of Mrs. Piper. I have tried to give all of them that unity of interest and meaning which are due to the super normal having psychological character and demand ing more scientific investigation than it has yet re ceived. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Religion as Life IF one is to do justice to the breadth of human nature, he may not forget that there are always two questions to be asked concerning any of the phenomena of the world and of life: How did it come to be? What does it mean? The question of process, of mechanical explanation, and the question of meaning, of ideal interpreta tion. And men cannot help asking the second question as well as the first. As Watts says, endeavoring to put into words the constant thought back of all his own work as an artist: As long as humanity is humanity, man will yearn to ascend the heights that human footsteps may not tread, and will long to lift the veil that shrouds the enigma of being; and he will most prize the echo of this longing in even the incoherent expression of literature. Book excerpt: Civilized Rebels compares in depth four very well-known literary and political figures, who all opposed arrogant regimes and became prisoners. Through comparative biographies of Oscar Wilde, Jean Améry, Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi, it explores the long-term process of the retreat of the West from global power since the late nineteenth century, relating this to the decline and fall of the British Empire and the trauma surrounding Brexit. Drawing on rich empirical materials to examine themes of forced displacement, war, poverty, imprisonment and the threat of humiliation, the book reveals how these highly civilized rebels penetrated their opponents’ mind-sets, while also providing a sophisticated analysis of how their struggles fitted into the larger world picture. Methodologically and theoretically innovative, and written in a lively and accessible style, Civilized Rebels will appeal to scholars across a range of disciplines, with interests in globalization, historical international relations, postcolonial and subaltern studies, comparative biographical studies, European studies, the sociology of emotions and historical sociology.

He would make it evident that disbelief in a Controlling Power of life, and the consequent idea of an unlimited freedom to pursue happiness as an aim in itself, is a fatally destructive mistake; from which error most of the miseries of mankind can be shown to arise. The number as well as the diversity of their sources is a curious demonstration of the state of our conscious ness when confronted with the enigma of death. One poet, Mr. F. Bowles, has even based upon the work several fine poems, of a subtle beauty, which will appeal to lovers of life. I cannot recall without emotion certain letters, which breathed the joy of their writers at the realization of the brotherhood of organized beings. They have seen in it a new gospel of love and kindliness, making life more attractive and death itself almost seductive. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Secret of Living The secret of living, of living at least in the twentieth century, cannot be treated as though it were a single problem, open to one solution. Life offers itself to us in an infinity of aspects, each proposing its own question. In the vast variety of experiences comprised in even an average human career, the danger is to regard a success in one department as a success over the whole. But we may win a battle and lose a campaign. We may, like Rupert at Marston Moor, carry all before us in one part of the field, and wind up the day with a total defeat. Accordingly, in treating the various subjects which appear in this volume; in treating of work, of time, of money, of social life, of religious beliefs of the thirty odd themes in fine which are here discussed, we have gone on the supposition that, while each side of life carries its own enigma, which it is for us to solve, the secret of living as a whole is to be sought deeper down. It lies not in any sectional skills or acquisitions, valuable as these are in themselves, but in an attitude of the soul. In the final result the secret of living is to be found in the soul's mastery of itself and of its world.
