Book excerpt: Governments are increasingly confronted with scarce resources, which force their export promotion organisations to seek more efficient ways and methods. At the same time, with the export successes of the emerging economies, public export promotion policies of countries are confronted with diminishing returns, particularly when the traditional export promotion instruments are used. The DSM (Decision Support Model) approach to export promotion, which is adopted and explained in the book, is deeply rooted in the international marketing research literature and allows to identify, in the rapidly changing international environment, the most promising realistic export opportunities for exporting countries.

Book Synopsis Export Commitment and Its Impact on Firm-Level Export Performance by : Pawan K. Chugan
Download or read book Export Commitment and Its Impact on Firm-Level Export Performance written by Pawan K. Chugan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fast changing economic environment has led exporting to be evolved as one of the fastest growing economic activities in the recent times. However, in this highly competitive global era exporting firms have to overcome several barriers in achieving superior performance in the international markets. Enhancing firms' commitment towards exporting is one such step towards ensuring successful international ventures by them. It is essential for the firms to build their commitment towards exporting so that they can ensure effective and profitable actions. In this regard, the role played by firm's management is crucial as successful international operations require experienced and motivated personnel. The study therefore, focuses on the performance of exporting firms from the angle of commitment towards exporting exhibited by them, along with studying the moderating role of the phenomenon of clustering of firms in this relationship. The study draws its sample from small and medium sized exporting firms belonging to drugs and pharmaceutical industry of Ahmedabad city of the Gujarat State of India. On the commitment side it is found that a high degree of managerial commitment, which comes mostly from the owners, is a key to achieve better export performance. Looking at this direct relationship, it is also found that the SMEs benefit from clustering in the form of linkages, common supply chain network, labour pooling, information and knowledge sharing, etc. and therefore, the variables in the study act as competitive advantage for firms' better export performance.
Book Synopsis Export Assistance: The Way Back and Forward by : Anisur R. Faroque
Download or read book Export Assistance: The Way Back and Forward written by Anisur R. Faroque and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-09-15 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Born global” (BG) firms have attracted many researchers throughout the last decade. The emergence of this phenomenon initially posed a serious challenge to the validity and applicability of the traditional “stage” theory of internationalization; however, scholars have more recently been able to reconcile traditional and new theories into a single framework for studying the process of internationalization. This volume applies both network theory and knowledge-based theory to analyze export assistance in the context of internationalization of low-tech BG firms in developing countries (with an in-depth study of the apparel industry in Bangladesh). The findings that non-governmental network partners provide more useful advice than government agencies is one that may resonate through other countries, including developed economies. Government’s more useful role is confined to the financial support and incentives that are provided to such firms. It is, however, the commitment to exporting that emerges as critical for performance, more so than export strategy, suggesting that enhanced export performance is to attract, reassure and motivate entrepreneurs in ways that strengthen their commitment to international expansion.

Book Synopsis Exporting Through Intermediaries: Impact on Export Dynamics and Welfare by : Parisa Kamali
Download or read book Exporting Through Intermediaries: Impact on Export Dynamics and Welfare written by Parisa Kamali and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2019-12-27 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In many countries, a sizable share of international trade is carried out by intermediaries. While large firms tend to export to foreign markets directly, smaller firms typically export via intermediaries (indirect exporting). I document a set of facts that characterize the dynamic nature of indirect exporting using firm-level data from Vietnam and develop a dynamic trade model with both direct and indirect exporting modes and customer accumulation. The model is calibrated to match the dynamic moments of the data. The calibration yields fixed costs of indirect exporting that are less than a third of those of direct exporting, the variable costs of indirect exporting are twice higher, and demand for the indirectly exported products grows more slowly. Decomposing the gains from indirect and direct exporting, I find that 18 percent of the gains from trade in Vietnam are generated by indirect exporters. Finally, I demonstrate that a dynamic model that excludes the indirect exporting channel will overstate the welfare gains associated with trade liberalization by a factor of two.

Book Synopsis Determinants of Firm Export Performance in Uganda by : Amandu Yassin Is'haq
Download or read book Determinants of Firm Export Performance in Uganda written by Amandu Yassin Is'haq and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Firm export performance (FEP) has been a subject of research since 1960s. This is because favourable firm performance as a business activity is important not only to the export company but also the national economy. At firm level, good performance brings about company growth through profit re-investment and development of company's facilities and resources. At industry and national economy level, it results in innovation and quality development, government revenue through taxes, employment, and infrastructural developments among others. All these consequently improve livelihood, standard of living of the citizen and economic development in a country. For these reasons, practitioners and academics remain interested in issues of acceptable level of FEP. Practitioners strive to achieve firm export objectives especially objectives of profitability and growth; and academics want to explain the factors and other issues underlying FEP. The available literature indicates that it is not clear what determines acceptable level of FEP. The literature further indicates that knowledge on FEP is fragmented, contradictory, and full of controversies, lacking consensus and the theory on FEP is still at infancy stage of development. Export corporations are reportedly facing challenges in operationalising their export objectives, leading to continued poor performance. Therefore the objective of this study is to examine the literature to identify the determinants of FEP in the context of Uganda, and then to propose a model to gain insight into the dynamics in order to generate new understanding and explanation of FEP. Examination of literature identified export market orientation, export market environment, and organisational learning as independent variables. In addition, export market information system, export market strategy, and organisational innovations capability were also identified as mediators. Quantitative cross-sectional survey was conducted. Self-administered questionnaires were used to collect data from 250 firms in some industries in the export sector. Psychometric analyses covering reliability, exploratory, confirmatory, and validities analyses were performed. Finally, structural equation modelling was used to validate and analyse the hypothesised relationships in the study. The results indicate that the independent variables indirectly relate to FEP. This implies that an export development or promotion corporation needs to invest in implementation and practice of these variables. The key variable that have been empirically identified as determining FEP include export market orientation, export market environment and organisational learning as independent variables; and export market information system, export market strategy and organisational innovations capability as mediating variables. Appropriate implementation and practice of these variables would create competitive edge hence in export firms, hence, improving FEP. This would consequently enable the firms to realise their export objectives, and other economic benefits due to good export performance. In conclusion, from the perspective of Uganda, good FEP is determined by export market orientation, export market environment and organisational learning. These determinants yield better influence through export market information system, export market strategy and organisational innovations capability as mediators.

This book was released on 2022-04-29 with total page 52 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper studies the relationship between export structure and growth performance. We design an export recommendation system using a collaborative filtering algorithm based on countries' revealed comparative advantages. The system is used to produce export portfolio recommendations covering over 190 economies and over 30 years. We find that economies with their export structure more aligned with the recommended export structure achieve better growth performance, in terms of both higher GDP growth rate and lower growth volatility. These findings demonstrate that export structure matters for obtaining high and stable growth. Our recommendation system can serve as a practical tool for policymakers seeking actionable insights on their countries’ export potential and diversification strategies that may be complex and hard to quantify.
