Download or read book U.S. Border Security written by Judith Ann Warner and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 399 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This text provides an integrated view of post-9/11 security concerns over the United States's shared border with Mexico and Canada in regards to terrorism, unauthorized migration, drug and arms smuggling, and other illegal trade. The challenges facing U.S. Customs and Border Patrol are daunting. There are 19,841 miles of American land and water boundaries to protect, and 95,000 miles of shoreline and defined air space subject to homeland security surveillance. Additionally, the booming drug trade across the U.S.-Mexico border, combined with the ever-increasing number of migrants wanting to reach our land of opportunity, has resulted in a grim death toll: more than 5,000 known migrant deaths have occurred along the U.S.-Mexico border during 1995–2008, and in 2009, an estimated 9,635 Mexicans were killed in drug-related violence, with 2,573 people killed in Ciudad Juarez alone. U.S. Border Security focuses on the contrast between border security before and after the 9/11 terrorist attacks. This text also examines the controversial topics of illegal immigration, counterterrorism, drug and weapons trafficking, human smuggling, the impact of border security on the movement of people and goods, and the effect of the war on terrorism on civil and human rights.
Book Synopsis Border Security by : David A. Powner
Download or read book Border Security written by David A. Powner and published by . This book was released on 2014-02-08 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Dept. of Homeland Security's (DHS's) border enforcement system, known as TECS (not an acronym), is the primary system available for determining admissibility of persons to the U.S. It is used to prevent terrorism, and provide border security and law enforcement, case management, and intelligence functions for multiple federal, state, and local agencies. TECS became difficult and expensive to maintain because of technology obsolescence and its inability to support new mission requirements, so in 2008, DHS began an effort to modernize the system. It is being managed as two separate programs working in parallel by U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) and Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). This report (1) determined the scope and status of the two TECS Mod (modernization) programs; (2) assessed selected CBP and ICE program management practices for TECS Mod; and (3) assessed the extent to which DHS is executing effective executive oversight and governance of the two TECS Mod programs. Book excerpt: The goal of this subcommittee has been to make sure that the Department of Homeland Security is adequately securing America's many, many miles of border. However, when we talk about border security, sometimes we don't think about our liquid borders that our Nation has. Our coasts obviously need to be secured just like the borders and the deserts of Arizona or across the Northern tier of our Nation as well. Of course, in Michigan we talk about the long, liquid border with Canada, who is our largest trading partner, but, as Mr. Cuellar points out often here, we also have a liquid border in Texas, in the Rio Grande. All of that needs to be secured.
