Book excerpt: On the second of April 1964, the Jobbins family left semi-rural, bohemian Eltham in Victoria, to re-establish themselves in Sydney.Life at the Palace is a necklace of anecdotes about the funny, sometimes sad things that happened on the way to finding a roof for their sizeable family in 'the big smoke'.This second volume of Joy Jobbins' memoirs takes readers on a very rocky journey from a two room, M-roofed country cottage to a multi-million dollar harbourside mansion - and other 'digs' along the way. It covers the ups and downs of the life of a working mother of five juggling the demands of work, children and marriage, and reflects the vibrant, swinging years of Sydney in the 60s and 70s.Told with verve and enlivened by interjections from family and friends, it includes Joy's creation of a pioneering TV show called Cooking with Sheri and the ill-fated publication of Australia's first travel magazine, Australia for Players and Stayers. This is a buckle up and hold on ride which inspires the reader to live to the fullest.

Book Synopsis Emergence in Science and Philosophy by : Antonella Corradini
Download or read book Emergence in Science and Philosophy written by Antonella Corradini and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2010-06-18 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The concept of emergence has seen a significant resurgence in philosophy and the sciences, yet debates regarding emergentist and reductionist visions of the natural world continue to be hampered by imprecision or ambiguity. Emergent phenomena are said to arise out of and be sustained by more basic phenomena, while at the same time exerting a "top-down" control upon those very sustaining processes. To some critics, this has the air of magic, as it seems to suggest a kind of circular causality. Other critics deem the concept of emergence to be objectionably anti-naturalistic. Objections such as these have led many thinkers to construe emergent phenomena instead as coarse-grained patterns in the world that, while calling for distinctive concepts, do not "disrupt" the ordinary dynamics of the finer-grained (more fundamental) levels. Yet, reconciling emergence with a (presumed) pervasive causal continuity at the fundamental level can seem to deflate emergence of its initially profound significance. This basic problematic is mirrored by similar controversy over how best to characterize the opposite systematizing impulse, most commonly given an equally evocative but vague term, "reductionism." The original essays in this volume help to clarify the alternatives: inadequacies in some older formulations and arguments are exposed and new lines of argument on behalf the two visions are advanced.

Download or read book The Cossack Myth written by Serhii Plokhy and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2012-07-26 with total page 403 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the years following the Napoleonic Wars, a mysterious manuscript began to circulate among the dissatisfied noble elite of the Russian Empire. Entitled The History of the Rus', it became one of the most influential historical texts of the modern era. Attributed to an eighteenth-century Orthodox archbishop, it described the heroic struggles of the Ukrainian Cossacks. Alexander Pushkin read the book as a manifestation of Russian national spirit, but Taras Shevchenko interpreted it as a quest for Ukrainian national liberation, and it would inspire thousands of Ukrainians to fight for the freedom of their homeland. Serhii Plokhy tells the fascinating story of the text's discovery and dissemination, unravelling the mystery of its authorship and tracing its subsequent impact on Russian and Ukrainian historical and literary imagination. In so doing he brilliantly illuminates the relationship between history, myth, empire and nationhood from Napoleonic times to the fall of the Soviet Union.
Book Synopsis The Scandinavian Reformation by : Ole Peter Grell
Download or read book The Scandinavian Reformation written by Ole Peter Grell and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 1995 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When Martin Luther's protest began making an impact in Scandinavia in the 1520s, this region belonged to the religious and political periphery of Europe. A century later the Nordic countries had become of paramount importance to European Protestantism, and it was the intervention of Lutheran Scandinavia in the Thirty Years' War which helped secure the survival of European Protestantism. This volume describes how the Nordic countries came to be solidly Lutheran states by the early seventeenth century; how the evangelical movements differed and succeeded, and the different pace of reform and its institutionalisation. It offers a revisionist view of the role of the Catholic Church in Scandinavia, and its attempts to halt the reformation, and demonstrates the difficulties facing the new Lutheran churches trying to convert a conservative, peasant population to Protestantism.

Book Synopsis Esperanto and Its Rivals by : Roberto Garvia
Download or read book Esperanto and Its Rivals written by Roberto Garvia and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2015-04-22 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The problems of international communication and linguistic rights are recurring debates in the present-day age of globalization. But the debate truly began over a hundred years ago, when the increasingly interconnected world of the nineteenth century fostered a desire for the development of a global lingua franca. Many individuals and social movements competed to create an artificial language unencumbered by the political rivalries that accompanied English, German, and French. Organizations including the American Philosophical Society, the International Association of Academies, the International Peace Bureau, the Comintern, and the League of Nations intervened in the debate about the possibility of an artificial language, but of the numerous tongues created before World War II, only Esperanto survives today. Esperanto and Its Rivals sheds light on the factors that led almost all artificial languages to fail and helped English to prevail as the global tongue of the twenty-first century. Exploring the social and political contexts of the three most prominent artificial languages—Volapük, Esperanto, and Ido—Roberto Garvía examines the roles played by social movement leaders and inventors, the strategies different organizations used to lobby for each language, and other early decisions that shaped how those languages spread and evolved. Through the rise and fall of these artificial languages, Esperanto and Its Rivals reveals the intellectual dilemmas and political anxieties that troubled the globalizing world at the turn of the twentieth century.
