This book was released on 2011 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book covers in a systematic way the main systems of phonetic transcription currently used for English. Unlike other texts in the market, which focus on just one type of transcriptional model, the book provides theoretical information and full practice for all systems.<BR> The material is divided into seven sections headed by a lengthy introduction to the history and development of the International Phonetic Alphabet. A set of eighteen samples from real contemporary colloquial English (British English), graded in terms of difficulty, follows. The accent chosen is the one known as RP or BBC English, with some minor concession to other regional varieties which do not stray dramatically from RP. Different models of representation are used under three main transcription systems: qualitative, quantitative and mixed. By using an identical set of texts in ordinary spelling for each system, the reader can constantly check different ways of transcribing a word or an utterance depending on the model used.

Consisting of three parts, the book covers: transcribing individual words, including consonants, vowels, primary stress, secondary stress, syllabic consonants and inflections; transcribing phrases and sentences, including liaison, weak forms, elision and assimilation; transcribing intonation, including the structure of English intonation and recognising pitch patterns. Ideally suited as a standalone workbook or for use alongside American English Phonetic Transcription, British English Phonetic Transcription is key reading for undergraduate students of linguistics as well as anyone teaching or learning English as a foreign language.

Bringing together a team of internationally renowned phoneticians, this handbook provides comprehensive coverage of the most recent, cutting-edge work in the field, and focuses on the most widely-debated contemporary issues. Chapters are divided into five thematic areas: segmental production, prosodic production, measuring speech, audition and perception, and applications of phonetics. Each chapter presents an historical overview of the area, along with critical issues, current research and advice on the best practice for teaching phonetics to undergraduates. It brings together global perspectives, and includes examples from a wide range of languages, allowing readers to extend their knowledge beyond English. By providing both state-of-the-art research information, and an appreciation of how it can be shared with students, this handbook is essential both for academic phoneticians, and anyone with an interest in this exciting, rapidly developing field.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Northern English: Phonetics, Grammar, Texts 1] Every living language possesses a limited number of spoken sounds, out of which, in varied order, all its locutions are built up, just as its printed discourse is built up of letters. These primary sounds are called its phones. It is best to leave out of sight at first the distinction of them into vowels and consonants (107). 2] A logical alphabet has one letter for each phone and one phone for each letter. To study a living language, as such, a logical alphabet is indispensable. The alphabet used here is that of the Association plonctique intenationale. 3] A phone is most easily defined to a learner in terms of its articulation, i. c., of the actions and positions of the vocal organs by which it is produced (10). 4] The lungs, in expiration, provide both the air, which is the medium, and the pressure, which is the generative force, of all vocal sounds. By variation of pressure the lungs produce also all differences of stress, whether as between words, or groups of words, in a sentence, or between syllables in a word, or between phones in a syllable, or between successive parts of one phone. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This much improved revised edition of the book takes into account the needs of the student in the context of the present curricula followed in various universities and English language teaching institutes. This edition therefore devotes a new chapter to Assimilation, a section to Tones in relation to Attitudes, and highlights certain important aspects of pronunciation, such as rules of word accentuation.Starting with general phonetics, the book goes on to give a brief functional account of general phonology and then a selective and yet fairly exhaustive description of the phonetics and phonology of English. It also provides a number of conversational passages in phonetic script as well as in ordinary spelling for practice in reading aloud. What sets this text apart is its novelty of approach and lucidity of treatment. English pronunciation is followed as per the "Received Pronunciation of England". This text is specially designed for postgraduate students of English, undergraduate and postgraduate students of Linguistics, and for those undergoing secondary and tertiary level teachers' training programmes in English.
