Of all good gifts which it is in the power of fortune to bestow, none can surpass the being born of wise, honourable, and tender parents: and this lot fell to him. He came of a good stock, though not of the kind most recognized by Colleges of Arms. Descended from Scotch Presbyterians - ministers many of them - on his father's side, and from a Quaker family on his mother's, he probably united as many guarantees of "good birth," in the moral sense of the words, as could be found in these islands at the beginning of the century. His mother(nee Selina Mills) appears to have been a woman of warm-hearted and affectionate temper, yet clear-headed and firm withal, and with good eye for the influences which go to the formation of character. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters: William Hickling Prescott Throughout the first few decades of the nineteenth century, the United States, though forming a political entity, were in everything but name divided into three separate nations, each one of which was quite unlike the other two. This difference sprang partly from the character of the population in each, partly from divergent tendencies in American colonial develop ment, and partly from conditions which were the result of both these causes. The culture history, therefore, of each of the three sections exhibits, naturally enough, a distinct and definite phase of intellectual activity, which is reflected very clearly in the records of American literature. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 7: Scott; Dickens; Spenser Ir will be observed that the greater part of this little book has been taken in one form or other from Lockhart's Mfe of Sir Walter Scott, in ten volumes. N o introduction to Scott would be worth much in which that course was not followed. Indeed, excepting Sir Walter's own writ ings, there is hardly any other great source of information about him and that is so full, that hardly anything need ful to illustrate the subject of Scott's life remains un touched. As regards the only matters of controversy, Scott's relations to the Ballantynes, I have taken care to check Mr. Lockhart's statements by reading those of the representatives of the Ballantyne brothers; but With this exception, Sir Walter's own works and Lockhart's life of him are the great authorities concerning his character and his story. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Men of Letters, Vol. 13: Keats; Hawthorne; Carlyle In this edition, besides the texts reprinted from the first editions, all the genuine letters and additional poems published in 3, 6, 9, 13, and 14 of the above are brought together, as well as most of the biographical notices contained in 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, 10, and 12; also a series of previously unpublished letters of Keats to his sister; with a great amount of valuable illustrative and critical material besides. Except for a few errors, which I shall have occasion to point out, Mr. Forman's work might for the purpose of the student be final, and I have necessarily been indebted to it at every turn. It could not have been written at all without the aid Of the Publications Of the Chaucer Socie ty, and more especially Of the labours Of the Society's Director, Mr. Furnivall. To other recent writers on Chau cer - including Mr. Fleay, from whom I never differ but with hesitation - I have referred, in so far as it was in my power to do so. Meanwhile Mr. Croker had been making an ex tensive collection of materials for an exhaustive edition of Pope'sworkainwhichhe wasto beamisted by Mr. Peter Cunningham. After Oroker'e death these materials were submitted by Mr. Murray to Mr. Whitwell Elwin, whose own researches have grmtly extended our knowledge, and who had also the advantage of Mr. Dilke's advice. Mr. Elwin began, in 1871, the publication of the long-promised edition. It was to have occupied ten volumes - five of poems and five of correspondence, the latter of which was to include a very large proportion of previously nu published matter. Unfortunately for all students of Eng lish fitsraturaonly two volumes of poetryand three of correspondence have appeared The notes and prefaces, however, contain a vast amount of information, which slurs up many previously disputed points in the poets career; and it is to be hoped that the materials collected for the remaining volumes will not be ultimately lost. It is easy to dispute some of Mr. Elwin's critical opinions, but it would be impossible to speak too highly of the value of his investigations of facts. Without a study of his work, no adequate knowledge of pope is attainable. Biographer of Pope, if he ever appears, must be endowed with the qualities of an acute critic and a patient antiquarian; and it would take years of labour to work mt all the minute problems connected with the subject. All that I can profess to have done is to have given a short summary of the obvious facts, and of the main conclusions established by the evidence given at length in thewritingsof Mr. Dilke and Mr. Elwin. I have added such criticisms as seemed desirable in a work of this kind, and I must beg pardon by anticipation if I have fallen hiio inaccuracies in relating a story so full of. Book excerpt: Hawthorne (English Men of Letters Series) by Henry James It will be necessary, for several reasons, to give this short sketch the form rather of a critical essay than of a biography. The data for a life of Nathaniel Hawthorne are the reverse of copious, and even if they were abundant they would serve but in a limited measure the purpose of the biographer. Hawthorne's career was probably as tranquil and uneventful a one as ever fell to the lot of a man of letters; it was almost strikingly deficient in incident, in what may be called the dramatic quality. Few men of equal genius and of equal eminence can have led on the whole a simpler life. His six volumes of Note-Books illustrate this simplicity; they are a sort of monument to an unagitated fortune. Hawthorne's career had few vicissitudes or variations; it was passed for the most part in a small and homogeneous society, in a provincial, rural community; it had few perceptible points of contact with what is called the world, with public events, with the manners of his time, even with the life of his neighbours. Its literary incidents are not numerous. He produced, in quantity, but little. His works consist of four novels and the fragment of another, five volumes of short tales, a collection of sketches, and a couple of story-books for children. And yet some account of the man and the writer is well worth giving. Whatever may have been Hawthorne's private lot, he has the importance of being the most beautiful and most eminent representative of a literature. The importance of the literature may be questioned, but at any rate, in the field of letters, Hawthorne is the most valuable example of the American genius. That genius has not, as a whole, been literary; but Hawthorne was on his limited scale a master of expression. ANCESTRY, PARENTAGE, AND CHILDHOOD. Sir Walter Scott was the first literary man of a great riding, sporting, and fighting clan. Indeed, his father-a Writer to the Signet, or Edinburgh solicitor-was the first of his race to adopt a town life and a sedentary profession. Sir Walter was the lineal descendant-six generations removed-of that Walter Scott commemorated in The Lay of the Last Minstrel, who is known in Border history and legend as Auld Wat of Harden. Auld Wat's son William, captured by Sir Gideon Murray, of Elibank, during a raid of the Scotts on Sir Gideon's lands, was, as tradition says, given his choice between being hanged on Sir Gideon's private gallows, and marrying the ugliest of Sir Gideon's three ugly daughters, Meikle-mouthed Meg, reputed as carrying off the prize of ugliness among the women of four counties. Sir William was a handsome man. We are delighted to publish this classic book as part of our extensive Classic Library collection. Book excerpt: Excerpt from British Letters, Illustrative of Character and Social Life The aim Of this work is to present certain phases of life and Character as described and exemplified by British letter-writers. While the search for materials has not been exhaust tive, it has been reasonably thorough. The number Of writers quoted is not particularly large; and that fact is a matter of indifference; for the end in view has not been to crowd the pages with distinguished names, but to insure the essential fitness Of the selections - a fitness consisting in their special adaptation to the plan Of the series. The peculiar Charm Of letters - perhaps, also, their greatest value - is brought home to us when they are familiar, unstudied expressions Of thought and feeling; when they betray no sense Of a larger audience than the friends for whom alone they were written. The contents Of these volumes do not uniformly maintain so high an excellence, but they exhibit many striking examples Of it. Letters which are known to have been intended for publication.
