Book Synopsis English Language and the Medical Profession: Instructing and Assessing the Communication Skills of International Physicians by : Barbara Hoekje
Download or read book English Language and the Medical Profession: Instructing and Assessing the Communication Skills of International Physicians written by Barbara Hoekje and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2011-11-16 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: English Language and the Medical Profession: Instructing and Assessing the Communication Skills of International Physicians is designed for a new context for English language teaching: the emerging, worldwide interest in English for medicine. The book offers a program for an English language curriculum that is specifically designed for the important and growing group of international medical professionals, with a focus on both instruction and assessment. International physicians in the United States now total more than 25 per cent of the physician workforce. Even subsequent to their passage of the clinical skills exam required for licensing and practice as physicians in U.S. hospitals, international physicians face communication challenges as first-year residents and may be referred to specialists for language and cultural issues. Advanced residents may face additional issues when they begin work as independent practitioners. This volume goes beyond existing texts in collecting the expertise of English language teaching and testing experts, medical residency supervisors, medical licensing, and exchange agencies in examining issues related to international physicians' performance as graduate students and doctors in hospitals and other settings. The contributors include specialists at the Educational Commission for Foreign Medical Graduates and doctors who supervise international medical residents as well as recognized ESP practitioners.

Book Synopsis Language and Discrimination by : Celia Roberts
Download or read book Language and Discrimination written by Celia Roberts and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-09-25 with total page 441 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Langauge and Discrimination provides a unique and authoritative study of the linguistic dimension of racial discrimination. Based upon extensive work carried out over many years by the Industrial Language Training Service in the U.K, this illuminating analysis argues that a real understanding of how language functions as a means of indirect racial discrimination must be founded on an expanded view of language which recognises the inseparability of language, culture and meaning. After initially introducing the subject matter of the book and providing an overview of discrimination and language learning, the authors examine the relationship between theory and practice in four main areas: theories of interaction and their application; ethnographic and linguistic analysis of workplace settings; training in communication for white professionals; and language training for adult bilingual workers and job-seekers. Detailed case studies illustrate how theory can be turned into practice if appropriate information, research, development and training and co-ordinated in an integrated response to issues of multi-ethnic communication, discrimination and social justice.

Book Synopsis English Language Communication Skills in English for Medical Purposes by : Mary Van Galen
Download or read book English Language Communication Skills in English for Medical Purposes written by Mary Van Galen and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 111 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Completing a medical degree and matching into a medical residency are challenging academic endeavors. Even more challenging is matching into a United States medical residency if you are a nonnative English speaker and completed a medical degree at a foreign medical school. Over 25% of United States working physicians are classified as International Medical Graduates (Foreign Medical Doctors). Although English has become the lingua franca of the global medical discourse community, a major hurdle for International Medical Graduates is the demonstration of effective English language communication skills via the passage of the United States Medical Licensing Exam Step 2 Clinical Skills (USMLE Step 2 CS). Traditionally, English as a Foreign Language (EFL) teachers have been asked to teach English to foreign medical students through English courses that focus on medicine. this field of teaching developed into a specialty field entitled English for Medical Purposes (EMP). The lack of medical knowledge of typical EFL teachers has posed challenges for both the students and the teachers. In this paper, I will provide a comprehensive background on EMP. I will look at the challenges faced by International Medical Graduates regarding the five essential English language communication skills in medicine-comprehensive reading, writing, speaking, comprehensive listening, and communicating nonverbally. I will also look at each of these language skills in relationship to the USMLE Step 2 CS. Finally, I will propose a five-day intensive EMP workshop for International Medical Graduates preparing to take or retake the USMLE Step 2 CS.
