The historical students, who for the last few years have been making original investigations for this county history, have, from time to time, found many intimate records of the life of the past for which the plan of the "History" allowed no place. A series of volumes, of which I undertook the general editorship, was therefore projected, in order to enable this interesting, and often picturesque, material to be used to good purpose. The series includes one volume on the Episcopal Palaces of the Province of Canterbury, one on the Episcopal Palaces of the Province of York, and one on the Royal Palaces of England, with an extra volume on the Royal Palaces of Scotland, suggested by, but unconnected with the work done for the "Victoria History."
